If your retirement benefits are based on 20 or

more years of service credit, you were married to your current

spouse at least one year before your retirement benefits began, and that spouse is not receiving an employer-provided retirement benefit or did not receive an employer-provided lump sum retirement payout, your benefits may include an additional benefit called a Spouse Allowance. Your eligibility for this benefit would have been determined during the initial application process–before your benefits started—and would not be added at a later time.

The Spouse Allowance portion of a retirement benefit is a conditional benefit and is subject to reduction or discontinuance. The following changes will impact eligibility for the Spouse Allowance:

• Death of a spouse• Divorce• Retirement of a spouse from any employer

with resulting employer-provided retirement benefits.

Should such a change occur, it is the retiree’s responsibility to provide that information to our office as soon as possible to avoid any benefit overpayments that would need to be returned.

100 Years of RetirementSome time ago we asked Adventist Retirees to provide

advice for those approaching retirement age. The following counsel was given.

Don’t buy too much land around your home. In a few years it gets too much to take care of and then the need for another move. (One retiree told us about having a contractor plant 1,000 fruit trees on his retirement home. Not many months had passed before he began to question his planning.)

If you are moving, rent at first, and if you are moving to be with your kids, don’t plan on them staying there forever!

You will need to have your house paid for, car paid for and look for low cost of living areas where you want to retire.

Try very hard to pay off your home mortgage before you retire. Life is comfortable in retirement when you do not have a mortgage to deal with.

Where do our U.S. Adventist Retirees live? They live everywhere. A handful live in Hawaii, Alaska or out of the country, (not shown). One recent retiree moved from her career state of Florida to a retirement home in Alaska.

4th Qtr 2009 New and At RestAdventist Retirement Plans

Each quarter we publish a list of those who have joined the ranks of retirement beneficiaries, and those who have passed to their rest. From time to time we are asked to place the ages of the deceased. We have declined to do this after considering privacy and identity security issues. Also, we are sometimes asked to not list an individual. Not all beneficiaries are actually retirees, under some of our policies, and may become unhappy upon receiving congratulations from well-meaning readers of the “New Beneficiaries” list.
