MESSAGE From THE

Head Teacher

Our 2016 Year 11 cohort of pupils and their teachers are to be congratulated on a fantastic set of GCSE results. A tremendous 81% of pupils achieved A* - C grades in English, with 78% attaining this standard in English Literature and 71% in Maths. It is also pleasing that 68% of the cohort achieved A*- C grades in BOTH English and Maths. The stunning results in English are also reflected in measures of pupils’ progress from Key Stage 2. We are delighted that 85% of pupils made 3 levels of progress in English (meeting the government’s standard for ‘good’ progress) and an incredible 52% made 4 levels of progress (deemed by the government to be ‘exceptional’ progress).

Excellent results were also achieved across the areas of the curriculum with the majority of subjects achieving A* - C success significantly above the national average. In addition to English and Maths, flagship subjects include English Literature, the Sciences, History, PE/Sport Studies, Art, Photography, ICT, Food Technology and Dance.

It was an absolute joy watching pupils open their results envelopes last month. Their delight and pride in their results was so well deserved and I know that they will go on to achieve great things in the future.

We were sorry to see them go and they will be very much missed. However, we look forward to leading future pupils to similar high levels of success in this new academic year and in the years ahead.

Jackie Gent

The student leadership team are a valued part of Bishop Barrington, giving the students a chance to determine what happens in the school. The team will be involved in arranging charitable events for the school, making decisions on behalf of the Bishop Barrington council and overseeing the Year 11 prefect team.

The student leadership team will be valued as they give a first-hand voice of the students in our school which is something we at Bishop Barrington find to be a key part of in a successful school. The team allows students to feel like they have a voice and that their voices are heard ensuring one of the foundations of the school is the opinions and views of our students.

Many of the students on the team feel honoured and privileged to be a part of the school student leadership team,

“I hope I will be able to make a positive impact on the school and make everyone feel like their voice is being heard.” Lewis

“As a student of Bishop Barrington, I am overwhelmed to be part of the three way connection we have between parents, students and all teachers.” Jayellen

Geography Field Trip

During the Easter holidays 28 pupils (Year 9, 10 and 11) and 3 members of staff travelled to Italy to enjoy 4 days in the Sorrento area brushing up on their geographical knowledge.

Trips included a visit to the Island of Capri where the group enjoyed a boat trip around the island to look at coastal features and even went under Lover's Arch! This was followed by a funicular railway journey up to the top of the island for fantastic views over the bay of Naples and a lunch of pizza and gelato. A walk around the island looking at the impact of tourism was followed by a glorious boat trip back to Sorrento in the sunshine.

The following day the group hiked up Mount Vesuvius to reach the crater where the local guide explained how the volcano was formed and the impact the eruption in 79 AD had on the local area. The views from the top were fantastic, even though everyone was out of breath.

The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was next on the visit list where the group walked around the ruins of the city caused by the volcanic eruption in 79 AD. It was an amazing opportunity for the pupils to understand the effects of a volcanic eruption and put their classroom learning into action.

It was an incredible trip to a beautiful part of Italy. Miss Henderson added, “The pupils were a real credit to Bishop Barrington School and fun was had by all. I hope I can take many more trips like this in the future as it really was a great opportunity to take learning outside the classroom”.

SCHOOLS’ PHYSICISTS OF 2016

Olivia Carey, together with her parents, joined me at Durham University on the evening of Tuesday 21st of June.

Following the chance to take part in hands-on activities provided by staff and students from Durham University’s Physics Department, Olivia was presented with an award and certificate. The University, work in partnership with the Ogden Trust to bring an annual event celebrating students who show a particular talent in the field of Physics.

The Ogden Trust is a charitable organisation that exists to promote the teaching and learning of physics. This is done through a wide variety of activities and scholarships which Olivia will be able to benefit from in the future.

The Schools’ Physicist awards are a significant occasion, attended by students from a wide variety of schools and colleges throughout the North East. The Science department was delighted to nominate Olivia, in recognition of her hard work and commitment to her studies. We would like to wish her every success in the future!

Mr Smithson, Science

Olivia and her parents managed to pull them-selves away from a rather sizable buffet long enough to enjoy the view across the city !

This year’s Keystage 3 Celebration Evening was a fantastic occasion.

300 pupils, parents, governors and staff joined us in celebrating the many successes that pupils achieved over the academic year. From pupils who inspired others by reading over a million words to pupils who displayed resilience by overcoming adversity in order to succeed in every day life in school, pupils who consistently achieved academic excellence across the curriculum over 3 years were also recognised.

The evening began with pupils reciting their own poetry which had been written to reflect and showcase our RISE values: Respect, Inspiration, Resilience and Excellence. This then set the tone for showcasing the many examples of talent displayed by pupils throughout the academic year.

Trophies were presented to those pupils who had made the most progress in a subject area, and Kindle Fires awarded to pupils, who, in recognition of our ‘Reading School’ status, achieved significant milestones in reading and literacy.

The Celebration Evening is always a special event, an opportunity for us to congratulate pupils and parents and share how proud we are of the successes which so many young people at Bishop Barrington continue to achieve.

On Tuesday 12th July 2016, a team from Bishop Barrington School took part in the Durham County Maths Challenge. This was a team challenge that involved students from Years 9 and 10, with the provision that at least two members of the team were in the younger age group. Bishop Barrington was represented by two students from Year 9 and two students from Year 10. The challenge pitted 22 similar teams from across County Durham and neighbouring areas, such as Sunderland, and was fiercely contested by all.

The challenge was split into four rounds. The first round was the poster round in which the students were required to produce a poster based on, "The Importance of Zero." Students were given the topic to research and prepare prior to the event and had to present their ideas onto paper along with answers to an unseen set of questions in order to gain points. One of the students, Kate, was especially good in researching and preparing for this task.

Round two was the speed round in which students needed to attempt twelve problem solving tasks with a limit of five minutes per task. In this round, the Bishop Barrington team scored very highly, achieving the fourth best score in the entire competition and, as a result, were awarded a celebratory plaque.

In the third round, our school team members went head-to-head with the members of another team in the Swiss competition. Each member of each team played each member of the other team in two different games, namely Pentominoes and Sim.

The fourth and final round saw the four members of each team split into two pairs for the relay challenge which involved students moving at high speed, collecting questions, attempting them, collecting the next question and handing it to the other half of the team. It must be said, two of our students, Alex and Gabrielle, were extremely quick and enthusiastic in this movement as the designated "runners", rushing about as quickly as they could to help maximise the final score!

Overall, the school achieved a very good final score of 373. In previous years, a score of around 400 has been enough to win the entire competition. Unfortunately, however, the quality of the field was very high this year and we did not place in the top five teams. However, all students enjoyed their day and were a credit to the school, with glowing praise from a teacher from another school who was responsible for supervising them throughout the day. Their conduct was impeccable throughout!

Welcome Esme Harte, Apprentice Science Technician

A YOUNG woman who lost a leg in a life saving operation has enjoyed yet more success as a Team GB climber.

Esme Harte won a bronze medal at the Gijón Lead, Speed and Paraclimbing World Championships in Spain.

Great Britain scooped six medals at the event and Miss Harte, from Sedgefield, County Durham, excelled in the paraclimbing competitions.

The achievement is all the greater for the 20-year-old, as four-years-ago she feared she would never climb again.

She eventually began to adapt to life with a prosthetic leg and it was not long before she was back in her climbing harness.

In July, an impressive performance at British Mountaineering Paraclimbing Series, secured her a place in the national squad and she has gone on to win gold medals at international contests in Austria and Italy.

Superstars in the MakingAt Bishop Barrington we have a range of exceptionally talented sportsmen and women. Three of our most acclaimed athletes are Muay Thai fighters, Kyle and Liam (pictured below, Liam on the right) and Ellie, also in year 9. The two boys had an excellent 2016, both winning British Championships in their respective weight categories. Both boys train out of Phoenix Thai Boxing club in Shildon and train up to six times a week before fights. Kyle is fighting for the World Championship in Denmark in September 2016.

Ellie is an outstanding sportswoman and an excellent Muay Thai fighter. Ellie fights out of Auckland Martial Arts Academy. In February 2016, Ellie became the WTKA European Champion. Recently fighting in Stuttgart, Germany, Ellie won two world championship silver medals in the 13-17 age category. Considering she has only recently turned 13, this is an amazing achievement.

All three students are part of the Bishop Barrington Elite Sports Academy and have received workshops and inspirational guest speakers to improve their winning mind-set. Director of Sport at Bishop Barrington Ben Johnson said: “I am so proud of all our Muay Thai fighters. I know they all train really hard and have always been focussed in our workshops. They deserve all their success and we are immensely proud of them”.

The Sharp System

The Sharp System is available to all students and parents to report an E-Safety issue within

school.

The are several pages of information about what to do in certain situations and there is a section where you can, "make a report". If there is an issue related to E-Safety and you would like some advice/support please complete the report form - this comes directly to Mrs Wallace (our E-Safety coordinator). Mrs Wallace will then try to resolve the issue and can offer advice/support or she will confidentially liaise with the most suitable staff members who can help to resolve your issue. Please note that if there is any bad language used in the message it will be blocked through our system and won't be received.

To access the system go to http://bishopbarrington.thesharpsystem.com/ use the hyperlink to the site from our main school website.

‘Slow to 20’ for safer streets project

Durham County Council is introducing part-time 20mph speed limits around 33 schools in the County as part of a, “Slow to 20 for safer streets” projects. Slower speeds outside of schools and in local neighbourhoods will improve road safety and create a safer and healthier community.

Slower driving speeds will result in:• Fewer road casualties• Encourage more people to walk or cycle• Children are able to play outside safely and can be more active• Less noise for nearby homes

The speed limits will be supported with road safety education in schools and the raising of awareness within local communities.

Bishop Barrington School is included in this project and has had a part-time 20mph speed limit installed. This is defined by signs and the limit will be in force during the period of time that the flashing lights operate.
