A young man wished to marry a farmer'sbeautiful daughter so he went to thefarmer to ask his permission. The farmerlooked him over and responded, "Gostand out in that field; I'll release threebulls, one at a time. If you can catch thetail of any one of the three bulls, you canmarry my daughter." So the young manstood in the field waiting for the first bull. The barn door opened and out ran thebiggest, meanest looking bull he hadever seen. He decided that one of thenext bulls had to be a better choice thanthis one, so he ran over to the side andlet the bull pass through the pastureand out the back gate. The barn door opened again. Unbeliev-able. He had never seen anything sobig and fierce. It stood, pawing theground, grunting, eyeing him meanly.Whatever the next bull was like, it hadto be a better choice than this one. Heran to the fence and let the bull passthrough the pasture and out the backgate. The door opened for the final time.A smile came across the young man’sface. This was the weakest, scrawniest
little bull he had ever seen. This one washis bull. As the bull came running by, hepositioned himself just right and jumpedat just the exact moment. He grabbed...but the bull had no tail! Life is full of opportunities; the opportu-nity to help someone who is hurting orin need, to do good to whomever wemeet; the opportunity to listen when achild speaks and tells us a story. Thereare opportunities to speak up on behalfof the weak or marginalized, or the op-portunity to be honest and admit ourmistakes. Some of these will be com-paratively easy to take advantage of,some will be difficult. But if we allowthem to pass by – perhaps in the hopethat something easier will come along –we might miss out completely. We maymiss the opportunity to do good and tobenefit others; we may also miss the op-portunity to grow and developourselves.
Another day and in another place, another young man encountered Jesusand asked what he needed to do to be
sure of his future. In responding to him,Jesus advised following the directionsGod has already supplied. When theyoung man asserted he had alreadydone that, Jesus then invited him to giveup his considerable wealth to help thepoor of the land and to then concentratehis energies on following the Son ofGod. Sadly, it would appear this oppor-tunity was one the young man wishedto let pass by. What became of him andhis wealth we may never know. However, the opportunity for us tosecure our future by responding toJesus invitation remains. “Come to me”,He said, “all you who are weary andburdened, and I will give you rest. Takemy yoke upon you and learn from me,for I am gentle and humble in heart, andyou will find rest for your souls. For myyoke is easy and my burden is light.”Surely the kind of opportunity weshouldn’t let slip through our fingers.

I was a very proudfather recentlywhen I had thepleasure ofwatching my eldestson play in his firstschool footballtournament withWest End PrimarySchool. It was a
great family day out and it was great to seeparents and kids coming together from variousMoray schools. Many thanks to the organisers, volunteers and others who make these eventssuch a success. It is a great outlet for kids in theevenings and weekends and releases to burn offsome energy and perhaps create some footballstars of the future!
It's always niceto bump intoMoray folk faraway fromhome. At arecent confer-ence in Vienna,I met up bychance withElgin loon,
BBC presenter and all-round nice guy GaryRobertson. We're really lucky to have such a greatbroadcaster from Moray, who is really in touch withwhere he grew up. Nice to see you Gary!

PUBLIC SESSION• Inspector McCruden briefed the memberson the latest crime statistics, including threecases of vandalism which are beingfollowed up. Successful cases wereprocessed in the case of two incidents oftheft by housebreaking at retail premises, one shoplifting, and a case of theft byhousebreaking. Ongoing enquiries are proceeding in relation to a female drinkdriving case and a male has been chargedwith the same offence together with otherroad traffic offences. Three people havebeen charged with being in possession of acontrolled drug, namely cannabis. TheInspector said that during an OperationMoravia in early May, the police focused onanti-social driving and as a result, tenpersons were charged with road trafficoffences and a further sixty were educatedregarding Road Traffic Offences. Fourpersons were issued with anti-socialbehaviour fixed penalty tickets, three fordrinking in public and one for urinating inpublic. In progressing priority enquiries, three persons were charged withvandalism, one with assault and one withthreatening behaviour. Moray Cllr Creswellasked if the Community Initiative Fund wasstill available and Comm Cllr Mackenzieasked if it could be used to equip theCommunity Wardens with radios. CllrHellyer said he felt that it was essential theywere equipped with means of communica-tion. Cllr Hellyer also asked if the police stillhad the powers to confiscate nuisancevehicles as several members of the publichad commented on a vehicle, with a faultyexhaust system, driving up and down thehigh street to the distress of elderly people. The Inspector asked if people could reportsuch cases whereupon a member of thepublic present gave him the details of thevehicle and its registration plate. The Chair
thanked the Inspector for his update.• Chris Wortley, Chair of the ForresCommunity Woodlands Trust, explained tothe meeting how the Trust had consultedthe public to prevent development of the“coffin field” by purchasing it from AltyreEstates and had applied for permits to carryout “green burials” on two portions of theland. The purchase of the land had justbeen completed and paths, essential to themoving of the coffins and to Forestry Com-mission standards, had been installed. Amember of the public, acting as spokesper-son for 160 members of the public whowere concerned about the work, said thatthey thought the woodlands were to be leftas natural state. Chris Wortley explainedthat even as a green burial site an incomehad to be generated to cover the cost ofmaintenance but there was no intention todevelop the woodlands. Cllr Hellyer offeredto mediate between the two groups andasked how many of the 160 were membersof the FCWT and if they had raised theirconcerns to the FCWT board. Moray CllrMcLean said that the planning applicationfor green burial had been passed in Dec2008 and Cllr Hellyer pointed out that thetime to object had long since passed, buthe was prepared to act as a go between ifthey so wished.• Kirsty Conti, Lead Development Officerfor Forres Area Community Trust (FACT),said that she was taking the opportunity toexplain how they were combining variousreports, done over a long period of time, tofind what was required in Forres to improvethe community. They had created a ques-tionnaire, being handed out to communitiesin the area, to gauge support for variousprojects and to drive the best forward. Itwas pointed out that funding support wouldnot be achieved without Moray Councilsupport and this was sadly lacking for
projects which did not suit Moray Councilplans. Cllr Hellyer said that the MillenniumProject, creating facilities for youth, hadbeen rejected by Moray Council Officersand a plan to build a skate park facility atBogton had been rejected in favour of adeveloper proposition by the planning de-partment. A consultation to establish an ar-tificial football pitch drifted into oblivionwhen the public response failed to agreewith the location favoured by the Council.Kirsty said that she was pleased thatmembers of the Community Council wereon the FACT Board of Directors, supportingtheir efforts and she hoped that somethingmight be achieved at last having noted thedetermination of Forres Voluntary Groupsto succeed.• The meeting was addressed by EwanTulloch, a Forres business man, whowished to draw to the attention of the MorayCllrs a decision by officers of the council toterminate his lease on a piece of ground, adjacent to his business, on the WaterfordTrading Estate. At a time when all effortswere being made to retain jobs, this actionwould put him out of business and theeleven people he employs. The land inquestion, which Mr Tulloch has made offersto buy, cannot be used due to ground con-tamination but Moray Council say that MrTulloch’s business is preventing themarketing of the land to other potentialclients. Mr Tulloch told the meeting thatletters to the council from him were ignoredand not responded to. Cllr Hellyer said thatthe Community Council had the same lackof response when asking questions that theLocal Authority did not want to answer. MrTulloch asked if the Moray Cllrs could makeenquiries as the planners could not, orwould not respond to him.

Elgin BID is delighted to be hosting the 3rd Music Mania Event at Elgin Plainstones and around the City centre area, offering a fun filled day of music and entertainment for all the family. We are also proud that the event will support MFR Cash for Kids and hope to have a live MFR outside broadcast happening on the day (TBC).
Celebrating local talent we are delighted to have secured some fantastic bands including Be Like Pablo, Fortunate Sun, Max MacPherson Trio, Fat King George and Blair MacLeod.
Elgin BID Manager Jacqui Taylor said “This is set to be a really exciting day for all the family. We have some fantastic acts ready to entertain visitors to the town centre and the surrounding area.”
For a full list of the acts visit our web site www.elginbid.co.uk or follow us on facebook www.facebook.com/elginbid. For our younger visitors we will also have the hugely popular Bubbles the Clown and for the football fanatics we will have Street Football, live in the town centre.
As well as supporting MFR Cash for Kids we are pleased to be supporting Start to Knit, a charity which supports
adults with learning disabilities – who have been knitting the largest scarf that Elgin has ever seen, which will be on display on the day. We are also looking at securing the talents of local artists for the painting of a mural on the day on the frontage of one of the vacant premises in South Street.. ‘don’t miss seeing artists at work.’
As well as the day’s music and entertainment, there is the chance for 3 lucky winners to scoop prizes, which they can spend in one of the city centre retailers, if they successfully complete our musical treasure hunt.
So why not bring the family out for the day and embrace the sights and sound of Elgin. *Band Line Up subject to change.
Date for your diary – Our next event The City of Elgin Food & Drink Festival will take place on Saturday 15th September 2012, the largest of all the BID events, this is a date not to miss, more information will follow in the next Spotlight edition but make sure you keep the day free.

Jersey is the largest and most southerly of the Channel Islands, yet it is only nine miles by five miles. With the best sunshine in the British Isles and direct flights departing Inverness and Aberdeen from June to September, what could be easier?
Jersey has some of the best sandy beaches and bays in Britain. St Clements Bay offers beautiful stretches of fine sandy beaches and runs into Jersey’s capital, St Helier. The beach at St Ouen’s Bay stretches for five miles and is rarely crowded, and during the summer months this beach offers an array of water sports. St. Aubin’s Bay, is a stretch of beach from St Helier to the fishing port of St. Aubin. To its east stands Elizabeth Castle, a great historical site which is accessible either by foot at low tide or by the Castle ferry. The Castle has watched over Jersey’s seaway for over 300 years. One of the more popular beaches boasted by the island is St. Brelade’s Bay situated in a sheltered position on the south west of the island making it much warmer than some of the other bays.
Nestling off the Normandy coast and only a short ferry crossing from Jersey’s St Helier port is Guernsey, the second largest of the Channel Islands. St Peter Port, the island’s capital, is a bustling harbour full of restaurants and boutiques. Guernsey is situated 30 miles from the French Coast, and it benefits from a much milder climate than we do in the UK. It is a rambler’s paradise with an abundance of wild flowers growing in the mild climate, coastal paths, sweeping sandy bays and wide open beaches.
Don’t forget day trips are easily arranged to Jersey’s other neighbouring Islands-Herm, Sark & Alderney!
With both islands easily reached with direct flights from your local airport visitingJersey and Guernsey has never been easier.

The Universal Hall is one of the finest and most
unusual venues in the north of Scotland. Set in
the heart of the internationally famous
ecovillage at Findhorn, the Hall also serves as a
major public venue for touring theatre and
music, comedy, dance and film.
There are always family shows and events for
children in its season of public events. Coming
in Autumn 2012 are internationally renowned
Scottish artists like Aly Bain and Phil Cunning-
ham and the MacFalls Chamber Orchestra;
theatre from Horse and Bamboo and the
People’s Theatre (both offering great show for
kids); modern dance from the David Hughes
Dance Company; classical music from the
Masayuki Kino and much, much more. See
www.universalhall.co.uk or adverts and listings
here in Spotlight for more details of upcoming
public shows.
The Hall has a charming café with outdoor
terrace, The Blue Angel, open to the public
seven days a week, and the building is well
worth a visit just to see its unusual architecture -
the hand-carved stone fascia, the geodesic
roof with alpine sedum providing a growing
cover and glass lantern at the apex, and the
imposing stain glass foyer at the front, Inside,
have a look at the pentagonal auditorium
where the supporting frame is made mostly of
wood - unusual in this size of building - but
creating excellent acoustics for music and
performance. (The Hall receives a double
page listing in the Theatre’s Trust booklet
“Scotland’s Theatre Architecture”)
The Hall’s web pages provide information
about the very latest events - events like films
are added on a short notice. Besides print ads,
there is also a twice-yearly brochure “The
Good Gig Guide” which is available from the
building, the café and various outlets like the
Phoenix Stores and the Community Centre in
Forres.
Drop by for a coffee, for a look at the building
or to book in for a show. Tickets are usually
available for most things (except films which
are pay on the door) from the Phoenix Stores
(tel 01309 690110) near the entrance to the
ecovillage site, or online at
www.wegottickets.com/UniversalHall. There is
a dance studio and a fully-functioning
recording studio in the building - the dance
studio is used for weekly classes in such things
as yoga, street dance and children’s ballet. In
addition, the main auditorium has been
rented many times over the years for private
events - weddings and celebrations of all
kinds. For more information about events, or
how to rent the Hall spaces,
phone 01309 691170.

Wild things! have been delivering outdoor education with schools across Moray and the Highlands for the last 10 years. We offer a wide variety of programmes including Forest School, Coastal Classroom and holiday camps for children plus certified Bushcraft courses and wild camping experiences for teenagers of all
wild and natural places. To this end, we have developed two new programmes.
The ‘Woodland Activity Leader Training’ is a brand new course developed by Wild things! and accredited as an NCFE Level 2 training. The aim of the course is to enable participants to prepare and deliver safe, fun, educational and inspiring woodland activity sessions to a variety of groups. It is intended for teachers, teaching assistants, outdoor instructors, wildlife guides, rangers and parents. This year, the course will run twice - a week long residential version in November and a weekend programme starting in August.
Our Youth Leader Volunteer Programme is for young people aged 15+ who are looking for a chance to spend time outdoors, helping and inspiring others. The programme runs throughout the year with volunteering opportunities in both the school holidays and during term time, as well as advanced training sessions. For teenagers, volunteering with
us offers a chance to build on interpersonal skills, develop confidence in working with groups and could enhance your chances of future employment.
“Through volunteering participating and working with this charity, I have grown in confidence knowledge and friendships” Sarah, Wild things! Youth Leader

The Bike Revolution has started in Moray! Working with donated bicycles and parts, the team fixes them up or strips them down and then sells them on at affordable prices.
The project aim is to get more people out cycling by providing affordable bikes, maintenance classes and route guides.
Bike Revolution has been launched by Outf!t Moray and works with local businesses and charities. Proud partnerships with Stuart Cycles in Forres, Moray Waste Busters and Varis Training have helped the project swing into action.
Activities in the local area also include Bike Doctor sessions, where trained bike technicians safety check people’s bikes and attend local events around Moray.
The project has been funded by Moray LEADER, Cycling Scotland, Outf!t Moray and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
Donations of bikes, no matter their condition, are more than welcome. Give the team a call to arrange a time for drop offs.
Sales take place monthly at the HQ in Lossiemouth, with all bikes for sale pictured on the project’s Facebook page.
Money generated from the project goes toward providing vulnerable and disadvan-taged young people with training and development opportunities to boost confidence, life skills and employability.
