Why 11th January? This is the date of the Burning ofthe Clavie, a fire festival unique to Burghead, whichgreets the New Year, first recorded in records of the Pres-bytery of Elgin 1655. Banned by the Church in the 17th-18th centuries as idolatrous, the earlier history behindthis fire festival is unrecorded. Such ceremonies mayhave pagan origins, and at Burghead could date back tothe pre-Christian Pictish occupation.

The significance of the 11th January dates back tothe 1750’s, when the Julian calendar was reformed inBritain and the new Gregorian calendar was introduced.People rioted demanding back their 11 days but not inBurghead. Brochers decided to have the best of bothworlds, by celebrating New Year twice on 1st Januaryand 11th January.

Now every 11th January the flaming Clavie (a barrelfull of staves) is carried round the town by the ClavieCrew followed by a large crowd. Certain favouredresidents along the route have a lucky burning emberdelivered to their door. The final destination of the Clavieis the Doorie Hill on the ramparts of the ancient fort, where it is firmly wedged. After refueling several times,it is allowed to burn out and fall down the hill, when stillsmoldering embers are eagerly gathered.

Possession of a piece of the Clavie is said to bringgood luck for the coming year and pieces are sent roundthe world to exiled ‘Brochers’.

The Burning of the Clavie dates much further back

than the 1750’s, of course. Before the coming of Christi-anity, the priests of the day were the Druids, the men ofwisdom and learning. The common people held them in

superstitious reverence. Many were the strange ritesperformed at their hands, many the sacrifices theydemanded. Their chief instrument of ceremonial was fire.It was the great purifier.

Shaw, the 18th century historian of the Province ofMoray recounts a Druid rite, which was enacted when adisease broke out amongst the cattle. The fires in thehouses around were extinguished. Sparks were ‘forced’by rubbing pieces of wood together, and from these, bunches of juniper were lit, to be burned in the stalls ofthe cattle. The smoldering branches were carried in abasket (Gaelic word ‘cliabh’ pronounced cleeav) amongthe cattle in order to combat infection. When this hadbeen done, the flaming juniper was carried round thehouses in the vicinity, to rekindle the fires on theirhearths.

From such a custom is surely derived the Burning ofthe Clavie. On that anniversary night of pagan ceremo-nial, Burghead reverts to the mood of primitive times, re-enacting some form of fire worship many centuries havenot forgotten.

So it’s back to normality after theChristmas and New Year celebrations! How are you feeling now that the festivehype has passed? For some people it’s awelcome return to the usual routine of life.Maybe that’s your experience; you’re quiteglad to take down the cards, pack away thedecorations and put them in the loft untilnext year. However for others, if Christmasand New Year is a real time of joy andhappiness, it can be a struggle to saygoodbye to the holiday period and hello tothe regular pattern of life again.Maybe some of you are struggling to get

back into the normal routine because youknow that you have to face up to yourdifficult financial position. Perhaps in thelast year you’ve lost your job or havestruggled to cover your regular outgoings. The Christmas break has maybe taken thefocus temporarily away from yourproblems. But as January comes andnormality resumes again, the reality of yoursituation remains the same. For a lot ofpeople, the Christmas spending begins tobite as the bank statements or credit cardbills come tumbling through your letterbox. You might even have taken out an extraloan to cover the cost of the festive season, potentially adding to existing debts. And so

a tight financial position becomes eventougher. If this is you & you’re really strug-gling to meet the costs of everyday life orhave debt which is spiralling out of controlthen what can you do? Firstly, don’t thinkyou are alone! One effect of being in debtis that you can feel very isolated. However,a recent survey by Credit Action found thatduring December Citizens Advice dealtwith 9,389 new debt problems everyworking day.Secondly, be assured that there is help

at hand! There are a range of servicesavailable to help those struggling to makeends meet or repay personal debt. It isoften hard to take that first step and admityour need of help. But as hard as it is, thisstep is crucial to begin getting yourfinances back on the right track. One suchresource is CAP. This initiative has comeabout through local churches partneringwith award winning charity ChristiansAgainst Poverty (CAP) to offer a compre-hensive solution to those struggling indebt. Through a combination of budgetingadvice, creditor liaison and personalsupport, CAP can empower people to workthemselves out of debt and transform theirfinances. You might ask, why wouldchurches want to get involved in helping

people in the whole area of finance?Simply because we believe that God caresfor everyone and that each aspect of ourlives is important to him. A common de-scription of God is found in Psalm 86: Butyou, Lord, are a compassionate andgracious God, slow to anger, abounding inlove and faithfulness. So this love isreflected by providing a very practicalresource to those struggling with debt.CAP’s services are completely free ofcharge and are available to everyone re-gardless of your belief or background. So hopefully, whatever your situation is

as we begin this New Year, you will be ableto look ahead to the coming year with con-fidence. For those facing financial issues, may you know that help is at hand, andthrough resources such as CAP that youneed not feel alone or isolated. Instead beassured that there are people who careabout your situation. Above all, be encour-aged that the Lord is indeed a compas-sionate and gracious God who caresdeeply for you.

Apple and Pear Crumble withFresh Egg Custard

As I predicted the long winter has certainly startedearly, the snow has come upon us with her friend cold, cold nights, so to counter these long nights I think wehave come to one of the most loved winter desserts -Crumble. There are many varieties and a combinationof this classic but this is the one we serve at Knockomieand is very simple and tasty.

The basic crumble mix is half fat to flour and thesame amount of sugar as fat (or a little more if you wantit sweeter). So in general to make enough of thecrumble mixture if you want a deeper crumble toppingyou can just half it again

For the crumble100g/4oz Flour50g/2oz Butter or MargarineZest of Lemon, Orange and Lime50 g/2oz Medium Oatmeal (Optional)50g/2oz Sugar

Rub the butter into the flour until they cometogether and are of a Sand texture, add the zest,Oatmeal if adding and sugar.

For the Apple and Pear Mix4 Cooking Apples Cored and Skinned4 Pears Cored and Skinned1 table spoon Mixed Spice (to taste, or none)100g/4oz Caster Sugar50g/2oz Unsalted Butter 100 ml Apple Juice100 ml Water

Cut Apples And Pears Into roughly about 8 pieceseach, put into a pan with the Mixed Spice, sugar, butterand liquid, cook on a medium heat until they are justtender still with a little bite to them they should takeroughly about 8 to 10 minutes. Tip the fruit into a sieveand leave to cool slightly.

For the custard (Crème Anglaise)75 ml milk75 ml double cream1 vanilla pod split open length ways4 egg yolks50g caster sugar

Place the milk and cream in a sauce pan, scrape outthe vanilla seeds with a tea spoon and add to theliquid, bring slowly to the boil. Place the egg yolks in aheat proof bowl, add the sugar, and whisk to combine.Place the heat proof bowl over a simmering pan ofwater and whisk constantly until the egg yolk double inquantity, gradually add the boiled milk to the yolks, itwill thicken to a custard when it reaches 83°c. Preheatthe oven to 200°c/Gas mark 6.

Share the Apples and Pears into Ramekins, a smalloven proof tray or metal cutters, top with the crumbletopping and bake till golden brown. Serve with yourcustard for a lovely warming dessert.

February is the most romantic month of the year, and our Valentines menu is on our website, rememberto book early 01309 673146 or [email protected].

Like many ofmy con-stituents mywork meansthat I amaway fromhome for

several days at a time, makingthe balance of work and familyquite a challenge. One interest-ing side effect that becameapparent recently is that the timeat home has become a crashcourse (with my son as teacher)

in the workings of WWEwrestling, which my eldest sonbecame an expert in after only aweek of watching! His new fascination did remindof the days of rivalry betweenBig Daddy (the hero) and GiantHaystacks (the villain) I used towatch on the TV at weekends - afar cry from the tanned bodybuilders that are the wrestlingstars of today.

In recentweeks it has,u n s u r p r i s -ingly, beenn o n - s t o pcampaigning,questioning

and challenging on the impactof the Defence Review onMoray. In some lighter momentsI have, however, got along to seesome of our local football teamsin action.

A particular note of congratula-tions to both Elgin City andBuckie Thistle who have bothprogressed to the fourth roundof the Scottish Cup, with Buckietravelling to Third DivisionTeam East Stirling and Elgin offto play old rivals InvernessCaledonian Thistle. It willcertainly be an interesting NewYear for these two Moray teams.Good luck to both of them intheir games.
