PACE is an initiative of The Edge Education Foundation in collaboration with TheEdge Billion Ringgit Club (BRC). It will bring together BRC members, othercorporations and non-profit foundations who want to play a role in improving theeducation system by getting them to sponsor PACE in schools they adopt.

More than just a tuition programme, PACE combines academic support andmentoring to help academically low-performing students from disadvantagedbackgrounds. The academic support will be in the form of tuition classes in threecore subjects – English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mathematics. The classes will betaught by teachers from the schools or retired teachers.

Students from Taylor’s Business School (TBS), who are enrolled in the compulsoryCommunity Service Module, will run an activity-based programme revolving aroundimproving the command for English and Mathematics for PACE students.

Social support will take the form of mentoring and career guidance by Ernst &Young volunteers. Ernst & Young will also design, and its volunteers will teach, amodule on financial literacy and basic entrepreneurial skills to PACE students.

“As an organisation, Ernst & Young is committed to programmes, both locally andglobally, that focus on helping our community. “A lot of people want to help top-performing students. But TEEF and its partners,Ernst & Young and Taylor’s University, have decided to help students fromdisadvantaged backgrounds who are not meeting the grade in school. Werecognise that it’s going to be a huge challenge. But we believe that by combiningacademic support and mentoring, and by equipping these students with life skills,we will be able to help change lives, one student at a time,” said Dorothy Teoh,Chief Executive Officer of The Edge Education Foundation. Teoh was thefoundation’s signatory for the MOUs with the two partners.

She added that Boston Consulting Group’s analysis found that community-basededucation which encompasses academic support, mentoring, and parental supportand involvement can re-engage students and create the conditions needed forthem to succeed.

The Malaysia Education Blueprint also noted international research showing thatschools which engage with businesses, civic organisations, and higher educationinstitutions enjoy benefits that include higher grades and lower studentabsenteeism. PACE has also received the support of Performance Managementand Delivery Unit (PEMANDU).

“We are supportive of this effort as every bit helps to improve our public educationsystem. The Government recognises and encourages the contribution and value ofpublic-private partnerships, to achieve the common goal of improving studentoutcomes,” said Tengku Nurul Azian Tengku Shahriman, Director of the Educationarea for both the National Key Results Areas (NKRA) and National Key EconomicAreas (NKEA) under PEMANDU.
