NEW REGIMEN
Spotless, healthy glow,
fair skin.
The dream of Asian women regarding their skin ? To preserve fairness, a healthy glow and to feel confident again.
Asian women’s skin is exposed to daily external aggressions like UVA, UVB and pollution. These cause dark spots, darkening and uneven, dull and dehydrated skin which all affect skin translucency.
Clarins has made a major scientific advance in the understanding of hyperpigmentation through the MELA-EXO-SYSTEM and discovered a powerful plant extract from the acerola - “whitening-in-control” acerola fruit extract and acerola seed extract - to control skin translucency!Take control of your skin’s translucency.( Reveal a spotless glow! )

Institut Curie
Clarins Research has continually drawn on the advances made in science. For the launch of the new serum in the whitening skin care line specially formulated for Asian women, Clarins Research worked for several years in collaboration with one of the largest biological research centres in France: the Institut Curie. This major European research centre came into existence thanks to the drive of one woman, Marie Curie. After winning her first Prize in 1903 with her husband Pierre, Marie then received a second Nobel Prize in 1911 for Chemistry.
Today the Institute brings together teams of researchers at the forefront of studies concerning the melanocyte, the cell at the root of skin pigmentation and the appearance of unsightly dark spots that dull the complexion.
The latest discovery made in collaboration with Clarins Research has been published by an independent scientific publication influential in the scientific community.
Total whitening expertise from ClarinsClarins: 20 years of permanent innovation and leadership in the whitening field based on a knowledge of Asian skin and its philosophy of listening to women. Since its first whitening skin care launch in 1996, Clarins has now acquired total expertise in the melanocyte itself, the key cell responsible for melanin production.
Thanks to a scientific discovery made in collaboration with the Institut Curie, a worldwide expert in pigmentation research, Clarins has introduced a new scientific breakthrough and a new plant discovery with the launch of Tri-Intensive Brightening Serum in 2016.

Under UV exposure, these 5 steps are overstimulated, leading to the overproduction of melanin.
1. Melanosome formation
*In vitro test.
Beyond the role played by the melanocyte, Clarins Research then moved to the next level with the identification of another factor that alters skin pigmentation: the impact of the MELA-EXO-SYSTEM in hyperpigmentation. This global system includes the melanocyte, the surrounding keratinocytes and the messengers exchanged between these cells.
The exosomes’ essential role in melanin overproduction. In the case of excessive UV exposure, the melanocyte is informed of this aggression by messages sent by keratinocytes in specific envelopes, called exosomes. And as 1 melanocyte is in contact with about 36 keratinocytes, it means that the melanocyte receives exosomes from 36 keratinocytes. Exosomes contain proteins ordering the melanocyte to substantially overproduce melanin by +25%*. This significant synthesis is in addition to the well-known direct stimulation by UV exposure. This major discovery allows us to go even further in controlling the whole melanogenesis process: • by controlling the melanocyte’s eco-system via exosomes • by controlling the melanocyte’s activity directly stimulated by UV
Now skin pigmentation is also managed by the intelligent and wide-ranging targeting of exosomes, which carry information from keratinocytes to melanocytes in order to influence melanogenesis.

In the deepest epidermal layers, the melanocyte cell is in charge of producing melanin pigments, giving the skin its specific tone. Clarins Research, the expert in the skin pigmentation process, has identified the 5 steps of melanin production inside this cell.

For the 1st time, Clarins Research has identified the 3 stages of dark spot formation due to melanin overproduction.
Each dark spot follows 3 successive stages according to the content of melanin transferred by the melanocyte to the surrounding keratinocytes.
> Stage 1: Under normal conditions, there is a regular production of melanin by the melanocyte, which is transferred to the keratinocyte. This medium level of melanin pigments in the epidermis is responsible for natural even skin tone which can then be affected by UV exposure and lead to FUTURE DARK SPOTS.
> Stage 2: Under UV exposure, melanogenesis is enhanced by both the direct hyperactivity of the melanocyte and exosomes. This leads to an increase of melanin content in the keratinocyte, but not enough to be visible at the skin surface. These are what we called DARK SPOTS IN PROGRESS.
> Stage 3: Over time or due to more intense UV exposure, the quantity of melanin accumulated in the keratinocytes reaches the level required to make the dark spot visible at the skin surface. These are STUBBORN DARK SPOTS.

Why acerola? Good for the body, good for the skin! The acerola is a personal favourite of Dr Olivier Courtin-Clarins, Clarins Managing Director, as its fruit is renowned for its very high content of polyphenols and powerful molecules with skin benefits, making it a popular health food. He was convinced that the benefits of this amazing fruit could be adapted for cosmetic use. Following this idea and after further studies on the acerola, Clarins Research Laboratories have guaranteed its safe use in cosmetics and revealed its exceptional benefits.
Acerola fruit extractand its effects on melanin production via exosomes. For the first time, Clarins Research has identified the ability of acerola fruit extract to regulate the MELA-EXO-SYSTEM by inhibiting the message contained within exosomes, proteins which trigger an overproduction of melanin. The power of acerola fruit extract on melanin overproduction is very strong, decreasing melanin overproduction by -24.5%*, so it effectively counterbalances the exosomes’ impact on melanin synthesis.
*In vitro test. Melanin production under the effects of exosomes secreted by keratinocytes subjected to UV.
A story of bio-inspirationClarins phytochemists have selected an extract of acerola fruit, rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidant and help protect plants from the harmful effects of UV rays. To protect them during their growth, young fruits have the highest level of polyphenols. This is why Clarins harvests the acerola fruits when they are young, to preserve their content of active substances, and stabilizes them by freezing immediately upon harvest in order to preserve a high level of polyphenols. This extract has shown to be the most effective in preventing melanin overproduction.
A story of bio-inspiration: the powerful benefits of the acerola fruit. The most effective plant to target exosome messages.
Acerola fruit Clarins White Plus range regulates the 5 steps of melanogenesis and controls the movement of exosomes to keep melanin production under control and offer 3 complete anti-dark spot benefits to: • prevent the appearance of future dark spots • control dark spots in progress • correct stubborn dark spots

Lady’s mantle Alchemilla vulgaris
Lady’s mantle is a small, unassuming plant which grows by shady paths or hidden in meadows. Every morning, it reveals the beautiful spectacle of its downy leaves covered in sparkling drops of dew. This almost supernatural vision inspired alchemists in the Middle Ages to believe its “heavenly water” had magical powers. It helped them in their quest for the so-called “philosopher’s stone”. It also enabled young women to preserve their fresh, youthful appearance. Regarded as a “woman’s grass”, lady’s mantle was used in traditional medicine to treat female complaints but also for its soothing and healing properties. By studying this plant, Clarins Laboratories discovered that lady’s mantle, in addition to its recognized astringent powers, was also capable of slowing the excessive transfer of melanin to cells in the epidermis.
Huang qi Engelhardia chrysolepis
Huang qi is a tree from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia with a deeply furrowed black trunk which can reach 35 m in height. In traditional Chinese medicine, its roots are used to help treat tuberculosis and its leaves with antimicrobial and protective properties help treat fever, pain and skin conditions. In cosmetics, huang qi leaf extract helps fight oxidative stress and the depletion of antioxidant defence systems.
AcerolaMalpighia emarginata
Acerola is a shrub which grows naturally in the forests of South America. This wild “cherry” was a precious source of food eaten by the Amazonian Indians to treat digestive problems and sailors on long journeys used to drink its juice to prevent scurvy. However, this beneficial fruit only began to be studied scientifically in the 1950s and it was discovered that acerola had an incredibly high content of vitamin C, making it the ideal food supplement to treat fatigue or winter ills. In cosmetics, acerola fruit extract is used to help reduce the overproduction of melanin, while the extract from its seed contributes to good oxygenation of the skin.
Herbarium
Sandspurry Spergularia rubra
From June to September, sandspurry’s pink flowers blossom on sandy, rocky areas across Europe and North Africa. Sandspurry is able to thrive
on such arid ground thanks to its long, tough root which grows deep down to find water and in doing so, helps to stabilize the soil. In North Africa,
it is ground into a powder and mixed with olive oil to make a cream that helps to visibly reduce pigmentation marks. Sandspurry is also known
as “stone breaker” as it is used in the medical field to treat kidney stones. In cosmetics, sandspurry extract is used for its action against dark spots.
Meadowsweet Spiraea ulmaria
A hardy plant from temperate regions, meadowsweet can be found growing along river banks or on wet grasslands. It has a lofty, almost regal bearing and a beautiful crown of delicate flowers. In traditional medicine, meadowsweet is used for its anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing actions. In cosmetics, it helps maintain healthy-looking, matte skin.
MoringaMoringa pterygosperma
In India, it is called the “tree of miracles” and in Africa, “nebedaye” or “never die tree”. Well-known in tropical and subtropical regions for its
nutritive and medicinal properties, moringa has also demonstrated an exceptional ability to clear and purify river water. The peptide extract
from moringa seeds is used by Clarins Laboratories for its capacity to encourage the elimination of pollution particles.
Red janiaJania rubens
Red jania is a photophilic perennial seaweed found in calm waters which grows on rocks near the surface exposed to the light or in sandy basins. Depending on light intensity, its colour varies from pinky-white in very bright light, to violet-pink in lower light levels. Its fine branches composed of stiff, cylindrical segments give the foliage a characteristic pom-pom look. In cosmetics, red jania extract encourages the elimination of dead cells and promotes a translucent complexion.
White tea Camelia sinensis
White tea is a rare, highly-prized plant grown in China in the Fujian mountains. Drinking it was once considered a route to immortality and it gets its name from its silvery-white leaf buds which are picked during the first days of spring. Unlike other teas, white tea does not undergo any fermentation and is simply withered and dried. This simple procedure preserves all the qualities of the leaf and explains why it is so rich in anti-free radical polyphenols.
