2018 Nationals are in the books!

We had 21 shooters travel down to the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio for the week long event. This was the first National event for 6 of our shooters!

The kids shot two days of skeet and two days of sporting clays. We also had 2 teams stay an extra day to shoot skeet doubles.

Here’s a snapshot of this year’s awards:2nd Place JV in Skeet with a 567/600 Will Rechner, Reece Hanson, Benton Kuhns

5th Place Varsity Sporting Clays with a 191/200 Soren Hanson

1st Place Open Skeet Doubles Team with a 280/300 Evan DeWard, Reece Hanson, Zach Bemben

2nd Place Varsity Skeet Doubles with a 99/100 Soren Hanson

3rd Place MI ALL STATE TEAM for Skeet with combined scores 5 kids from MI KCCL Orange Crushers: Evan DeWard and Soren Hanson

From the KCCL Rifl e Range (July 2018) Greetingsfellowrifleenthusiasts.We’reinthefullswingofabeautifulMichigansummerandtheKCCLRifleRangeisagreatplacetoenjoyit.Comeonoutforsomeexcitingandsafefun. Over the past year that I have been supervising ourrifle range I’ve frequently helped to secure optics for thoseexperiencing unusually large shot groups or inconsistentgroupings from target to target. It’s often discovered that theopticwasnotmounted in compliancewith themanufacturers(rings/scope)torquerecommendations.Considerthataminuteofangle(MOA),or1/60thofadegree,isthesmallangleofanisoscelestrianglewithedgesof100yardsandabaseof1.047”.Approximating this toan inchunderseveralhundredyards isacceptablebut5%errorbecomessignificantatlargedistances.MOAshotgroups,orbetter, require that thegeometryof thistriangleremainconstant,andyourmountedopticateverystageof attachmentdictate the consistencyof that little bitty angle.Onceyou’verefinedyourtriggercontrol,breathingandaimingtonearperfectionyoumaynowbevictimofaweaklinkintheopticmount, assuming that the optic (scope) internals are ofsoundqualityandoperatingcorrectly. Forthoseabouttoembarkonahuntingexpeditionandarecheckinggearforfunctionalitydon’toverlookwhat’sattachedtoyourrifletoguidethatprecisepointof impact.Thephysicsofrecoilisbeyondthisarticlebutyou’llfindplentytoreadonthewebalongwithcalculatorsthattakeintoconsiderationfirearmweight, bullet weight, muzzle velocity, etc., and the fact thatthere are two recoils, primary and secondary. The importantpointisthatyouropticsandmountmechanicscantakequiteabeating.Idiscovered,unpleasantly,theeffectsofamassiveboltslammingforwardinanAR10onmyopticnotevenconsideringthat there are forces in both directions along the bore axisthroughanentirecycle. My recommendation, even if your optic wasmounted byaprofessional, is tochecktheirworkbyusingatorquedriverwith thequalitybits toverify themanufacturersspecifications.TorquespecsarefoundintheequipmentUserGuide,websiteortheirSupportLine.Youmightalsowanttodothisperiodicallygiventhattherecoilforcesofshootingcanalterthemechanicalsettingsofyourplatformovertime.
