Hull Collegiate Sports Tour – Sri Lanka 2016

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Hull Collegiate School Sports Tour to Sri Lanka brochure. With vast, golden beaches and calm, blue waters, a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, leopards and buffalo, and colourful, energetic pageants,I am sure visiting Sri Lanka is an experience our pupils won’t forget.

But it’s not just memories of the culture that our young sportswomen and sportsmen will bring home with them. Playing sport enables our pupils to develop many skills including teamwork, tenacity and self-discipline. Competing in a different environment will allow them to build on these and develop empathy, tolerance and understanding.

Our school offers a wide variety of sporting activities, for both boys and girls, from inter-house matches to national competitions. With exciting developments, including a new pavilion and grass pitches, sport at Hull Collegiate is continually advancing. Those who have been selected to represent the school in Sri Lanka should be proud of their excellent sporting achievements, which have been made possible by our dedicated staff.

I wish all of our pupils competing in Sri Lanka a safe journey and I urge them to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself in this diverse country. I wish them every success in their matches and I look forward to following their adventures.

James Windeatt – Tour Manager

In 2009, we were extremely lucky to take 63 pupils and eight staff on the school’s first ever long haul sports tour to Barbados where we played against some of the best sportsmenand women the Caribbean had to offer. Seven years on, 48 talented athletes accompaniedby five members of staff will make the trip across the world to the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka.

But why Sri Lanka I am asked? When arranging a sports tour, not only do we consider the quality of sporting fixtures that the pupils will compete in, but also the life experiences that the pupils will have. Sri Lanka is filled with picturesque landscapes, rolling mountains, bright, vibrant forests. The golden beaches and turquoise oceans, coupled with gushing waterfalls make the idealistic picture postcard. This sets the scene for what will be a trulymemorable, amazing trip, however for our tourists. The trip however, will be action packed with many fixture days sandwiched by travel through the stirring mountains carpeted with the lush green tea gardens and roaring waterfalls. The pupils will get the chance to experience the rich colonial heritage of Colombo, as well as discovering ancient wonders of the cultural triangle, which include historical monuments, fortresses and religious statues in Kandy, as well as visiting the Pinnewala National Elephant Orphanage. We have made arrangements to visit a charitable organisation to support the local community development, which will allow the pupils and staff to contribute to the communities devastated by the 2004 Tsunami as well as the recent landslides.

It is an honour to lead this trip with pupils who represent the school on a regular basis and are a constant credit to Hull Collegiate School. Having recently visited the country with Miss Davis, we hope the pupils take as much out of their trip as we did in the short time we were there. It is an incredible country with an enchanting mix of eastern culture, western influence, race, religion, exciting cuisine and stunning scenery; for some of us a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Fraser Henderson - Head of the Boys’ PE and Games and Deputy Head of Middle SchoolFraser has been teaching PE for 13 years now – (11 at HCS!). He studied at York St John University where he captained the University football team whilst studying for his Sport and Exercise Science Degree. After leaving University, Fraser worked in America coaching football (‘soccer’). He worked at the Academies of New England Revolution and Chicago Fire. Although a busy father to Alfie (who is 4 years old) he still plays tennis for York tennis club and has been approached by Ionians 2nd team (having previously played rugby for Yorkshire) and was recently scouted for Stamford Bridge Vets football team. Fraser is extremely experienced when it comes to sports tours and has visited the following destinations for durations ranging from 4 days to 4 weeks; Portugal, Spain, Malta, Austria, Italy, Ecuador, Dublin, Uganda, Utah (USA) and Barbados.

Ann Harvey is a PE Teacher in both the Prep and Senior school. She has been teaching PE for four years now, in four different schools! She studied at Manchester Metropolitan University where she played 1st Team hockey whilst studying for her Secondary Physical Education degree. After leaving University, Mrs Harvey has moved all over the country; Manchester, Coventry, Bradford, Newcastle and now Hull! She enjoys playing hockey, netball, rounders and has recently run the Hull 10K and came 4th out of the staff. She is looking forward to this tour as this will be her first long haul sports tour with any school. Having been on the recent school ski trip she knows how well run and enjoyable these trips can be. From the trips out, to the matches and the accommodation, this tour looks set to be fantastic!

Amy Dunning – Prep school teacher and teacher of Girls’ Games Amy is mainly a Prep games teacher, however, she occasionally ventures into the Senior school. She has only been teaching for two years, one of those at Hull Collegiate. She studied sports coaching at Leeds Metropolitan University before completing a primary PGCE at York St John’s University last year. Whilst at university, Amy coached sport in over 50 primary and secondary schools and worked as a coach for the FA. She plays as a winger for South Cave ladies football team and enjoys sport of any variety! Amy skis and snowboards and aims to get one or two ski trips in a year in the French alps. This will be her first long haul sports tour with any school and she can’t wait! Having visited many countries in the world including Jamaica, America, Canary Islands and France she can’t wait to see what Sri Lanka has to offer.

Sports Tour Committee – Sri Lanka 2016

James Windeatt – Teacher of Boys’ PE and Games and Deputy Head of Upper SchoolJames has been teaching PE for 10 years, nine of which have been at Hull Collegiate School. He is also a keen sportsman who has played a number of sports to county or national level including waterpolo, swimming, cricket and football. James still captains North Cave Cricket Club in the York Senior league, currently topping the batting averages (albeit only seven games in). This is the school’s second long haul trip which James has overseen; the first being an extremely enjoyable and successful trip to Barbados in 2009. James is an avid tourist himself having visited many countries with sports tours or more recently on the slopes.

Angela Davis – Head of PEAngela has been teaching now for 19 years (16 years in Hull). Whilst her hockey and football playing days are numbered due to her school commitments, she still represents the local rounders team Tranby Ladies as a bowler (undoubtedly the fastest in the league), and they are reigning East Riding Champions. Her greatest sporting experience was representing England at Kabaddi, touring the Guru Nanak temples, and then as British Champions touring Canada, with the highlight being playing India at the Vancover Whitecap Stadium in front of 45,000 people.

She never got to experience a sports tour at school, although she loved her tour experiences at university and for various clubs. Whilst her other experiences were less exotic and were limited to places such as Ramsgate, the Isle of Man and Portugal, they all created unforgettable experiences, as have all the tours that she led as a teacher of coach. The PE department’s last long-haul tour was to Barbados in 2009, and references are regularly made by Old Collegians to this tour. After hers and Mr Windeatt’s pre-inspection visit of Sri-Lanka she is fully expecting that this trip will be even better and she cannot wait to fly out to this paradise island in the Indian Ocean with 52 others on July 7th. She hopes that the whole group will take away with them many memories, with a few sporting wins along the way.

Sport at Hull Collegiate School

Sport at Hull Collegiate School has improved dramatically over the past eleven years since its formation in 2005. Regular fixtures are played on Saturdays and midweek against local and regional schools, as well as teams competing in National tournaments across the country. There are a number of individuals who regularly gain athlete and player of the match awards. The calibre of sport at Hull Collegiate School is growing and the reputation of our sports teams across the county is credit to the PE staff and coaches who continually strive to raise standards creating opportunities for all pupils at the school. The list of county and North of England representatives continues to grow and the school is entering an exciting time in its sporting development with the recent introductions of outdoor netball courts and outdoor cricket nets. Work is already underway on the Sport England football and rugby pitches; accompanying these pitches will be a new pavilion, with work due to commence over the summer.

Football at Hull Collegiate

This has been arguably one of the best all round football seasons at Hull Collegiate School. The top of the picks is without doubt the success that the U12 football team had in the English Schools Football Association National Cup. The Hull Collegiate team made it all the way through to the semi-finals. They beat a number of larger schools on the way (5 in total). Notable wins on route were a win on penalties against Barlby School, after a 2-2 finish in normal time, and a win against Clitheroe School from Blackburn who have a very good footballing reputation. We bowed out after losing 3-2 to The Priory School who we played at the Birmingham City FC training ground. The statistics for this U12 team were phenomenal over the course of the season; winning 10 and losing just 2 matches in total. We are privileged to have two of these up and coming stars with us in Will Buckle and Theo Dabbs. The season has also seen the Hull Collegiate 1st XI finish top of their league overcoming pressure from Woodhouse Grove. They beat Rishworth, Ackworth, Fulneck, Hipperholme, Huddersfield Grammar, Read and Batley to top the pile and be crowned champions. We are lucky to have two of the team’s stars in Jordan Weatherill and the incoming captain Bradley Redfearn touring with us.

The U13 team also finished as Champions of their SIS League as well, the most notable results came against Fulneck when HCS thumped them 9-2 and a very tight, but important 1-1 draw against The Grammar School at Leeds. We have a wealth of experience and football talent touring with us in Sri Lanka this summer and I know that they are as excited as we are to see how they fair overseas. We are sure they will shine, in fact the name Lanka is derived from the Tamil word “ilanku”, which means “to shine” or “to glitter”, which we are sure they will.

Cricket at Hull Collegiate

It has been a mixed season for cricket at Hull Collegiate this year with a number of fixtures being affected by the weather. The 1st XI had a positive season, losing just one encounter against Bootham on the last ball of the game, notching notable victories against Scarborough College, Fulneck and Hill House. In coming 1st XI captain, Jordan Weatherill is cricket sports tour captain and should bring a wealth of experience to those cricketing tourists. The U14 and U15 teams had varied seasons; victories for both teams came against Read and Ackworth. The U12 team, captained ably by Jack Pettit have had a fantastic season, losing just one game. A highlight came in an eight wicket victory against Ackworth which saw HCS chase down 125 in 20 overs with 7 balls to spare. Jack Pettit, William Storr and Thomas Douglas have all represented East Yorkshire, with Tom being selected to represent Yorkshire. There are many talented cricketers joining us on tour to Sri Lanka and, although the tracks will need to be adapted to, we are confident that we can put up a good fight against what will undoubtedly be strong opposition.

Memories of Barbados 2009 – Charlie Dodds

If I had to sum up Hull Collegiate Schools Sports Tour to Barbados in 2009 in one word, then it would have to be UNBELIEVABLE. To this day, the memories are still a huge talking point when the Old Collegians are back together. The activities and fixtures are not the only factors that made the tour to be such a success; the group who went out to Barbados came back as one big family, sharing the biggest and most important elements, fun and laughter.

Besides the beautiful surroundings and the glorious weather, the fixtures that we had were challenging, yet fun. With warm-ups consisting of dance routines, and cool downs jumping in to the pool with all our kit on, it was the making of a great day playing sport.

Alongside the fixtures came the exciting excursions that were just brilliant and unforgettable. To swimming with turtles in the crystal clear sea, to our evening challenges, including creating dance routines and tour songs, plus the famous crazy, but wonderful fashion show.

The experiences that we gained from the Barbados Sports Tour were life changing. I cannot express enough the importance and privilege of being part of such an extraordinary opportunity. I am so grateful at being given the opportunity to represent the school abroad and cannot thank the teachers enough who organised such an amazing adventure. I am sure that the 2016 Sri Lanka Sports Tour will be equally outstanding, and I’m so excited to hear all the new memories and stories when they return.
