In the girl’s portion of the tournament the Lady Buffaloes of Caliche (2-0) won for the fourth straight year, rolling past Otis 78-42 in the opener Friday and defeating Peetz 70-36 in the championship contest Saturday. In the boy’s tournament the Buffs had no trouble defeating Otis 84-23 in the opener Friday and getting past Peetz 77-60 in the championship contest Saturday to win the Carlile Classic for the ninth straight year. For the Lady Buffs in the opener Friday against Otis, senior Shayln Johnson netted 19 points, senior Rachael Edler 18, senior Jessica Taylor 14, sophomore Taylor Huss 7, sophomore Kayla Zink 6, senior Leanna LeBlanc 5, junior Jaedyn Lambrecht 4, junior Jordan Nelson 3 and freshman Cassidy Paxton 2. Edler led in rebounds with 13 and Johnson had 11. Edler also handed out 4 assists and had 6 steals as the Lady Buffs forced Otis to turn the ball over 32 times. In Saturday’s win over Peetz for the championship, Johnson poured in 29 points, Taylor and Edler 8 each, Huss, Zink and Lambrecht 6 apiece, LeBlanc 5 and Paxton 2. Taylor was the leader in rebounds with 6, Huss had 6 assists and Johnson was also tough on defense with 12 steals. Caliche forced 33 turnovers in that contest. For the Lady Bulldogs of Peetz in their win over Community Christian Friday in the tournament opener, senior Whitney Christian led with 11 points, junior Jodi Schumacher 6, senior Mallori Bjerke 4, junior Mikenna Curlee 3 and senior Taylor Hradecky 2. FRANCIS, KAN. – With a limited lineup, the Sterling Tigers came away with a tie for fourth place out of 14 teams with 85 points in the St. Francis, Kan., Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday. That’s because the Tigers captured first place in 3 weight classes as senior Jacob Beltran won the 106 lb. division with a record of 3-0; sophomore Jake Breidenbach was first at 120 lbs. with a 3-0 mark and senior Joel Contreras was the winner of the 152 lb. class with a 3-0 slate. Contreras, the defending Colorado state champion in the 145 lb. class, defeated Mike Kasson of Norton, Kan., the top- ranked wrestler in Kansas by a 3-1 win in overtime to claim the 152 lb. division Saturday. Contreras began the tournament with a 9-2 decision over Shelton McCain of Rawlings County, Kan., and came back in the semi-finals to pin Corbin Schoenthaler of Trego Community in :33 to advance to the championship bout against Kasson. Breidenbach defeated highly ranked Aaron Avelar of Goodland, Kan., by a 10-6 decision in the semi-finals of the 120 lb. class and went on to pin Norton’s Kade Unterseher in 2:43 to win the title of the 120 lb. class. In his opening round match Breidenbach won by a 9-1 major decision over Sean Rall of Colby, Kan. to move into the semi-finals against Avelar. In the 106 lb. class Beltran won by fall in 1:59 over Eric Rojo of Holyoke to place first in that division. Beltran quickly pinned Coy DeWaal of St. Francis in :36 to open the tournament and in the semi-finals won by fall over Ryan Johnson of Norton. Junior Erick Krier was a third place finisher in the 145 lb. class with a 4-1 mark. Krier opened the tournament by pinning Joseph Tarin of Wray in 1:40, and then went on to post an 8-2 decision over Brady Holzmeister of Colby. In the semi-finals Krier lost by a 12-3 major decision to Jared Tallent of Norton. In the consolation bracket Krier faced Tarin again, and the result was the same as the Sterling junior won by fall in 2:08. In the third place match Krier won by a 3-1 decision over Clay DeWaal of St. Francis. The Tigers did not have wrestlers in the 113, 126, 132, 170, 182 and 195 lb. classes. Norton was the overall team winner with 208.50 points. “It was a good start to the year for the limited lineup we had in the tournament,” said Sterling Coach Chad Duncan. “We should add some kids to the mix as the year progresses and we get all of our wrestlers in the lineup. “Joel (Contreras) looked extremely sharp in his final match on a limited number of practices this year. Jake (Breidenbach) did an outstanding job and will surprise some people this year when he makes it to the state tournament and Jacob (Beltran) also wrestled well.” In the other matches for the Tigers, sophomore Fabian Soto was 1-2 at 285 lbs.; senior Jason DeLeon was 0-2 at 138 lbs.; sophomore Dylan Prelle was 0-2 at 160 lbs. and senior Zach Little was 0-2 at 220 lbs. The Tigers will wrestle in a Patriot League tri-angular meet Thursday at University in Greeley against University and Lyons. On Saturday Sterling will compete in the tough Columbine Tournament. with 6 and Christian had 8 steals. In the championship game Saturday against Caliche, Curlee, Christian and Schumacher each had 7 points, Bjerke 6, senior Jennifer Gutierrez 4, Hradecky 3 and sophomore Cami Thompson 2. Schumacher had 7 rebounds and Curlee had 3 steals. For the Peetz boys in their win over Community Christian Friday, senior Casey Barrett led all scorers with 24 points, junior Garrin Cox 10, sophomore Cody Wilson 8 and senior Bradey Holtz and Garrett Roelle 4 each. Holtz and Cox had 7 rebounds each, Holtz had 7 assists and Wilson had 5 steals. In Saturday’s championship game against Caliche, Barrett had 19 points, Cox 12, Holtz 8, Wilson 7, junior Jordan Buss 6, Nelson 5, Roelle 2 and junior Shawn Bernhardt 1. The Caliche teams will travel to Haxtun Thursday for non-league games and on Friday will host Fleming. The Peetz squads hosted Leyton, Neb., Tuesday and on Friday will travel to Pawnee for North Central Conference games. On Tuesday Peetz will entertain Haxtun in non-league games. The Elks Lodge has set a date for their 44 th Annual “Hoop Shoot” Contest. The free event, which is open to all youth ages 8-13, will be held on Sat., Jan. 3, 2015 in the auxiliary gym on the Northeastern Junior College (NJC) campus. The event will begin with signup at 8 a.m. Winners of the event will compete in the District Hoop Shoot on Sat., Jan. 17 also on NJC’s campus and will compete against other young boys and girls from 9 Northern Colorado Lodges for the chance to go to the State Shoot in Salida in February.
