Fleming (11-0) will host the Eads Eagles (10-1) Saturday at 1 p.m. for the state title. The defending state champs made it back to the state championship game with a 62-8 thumping over the Hi-Plains Patriots Saturday in the semi-final contest. Eads earned the right to play Fleming by taking care of Deer Trail in Saturday’s other semi-final contest, 56-12. Fleming’s win over Hi-Plains was a typical Wildcat victory by taking care of business early, jumping out to a 54-8 halftime lead. The Wildcats added another touchdown in the third quarter as the second half went fast due to the 45-point mercy rule. As a team Fleming churned out 369 yards on the ground, led by senior Trevor Chintala with 178 yards on 8 carries and 2 TD’s. Senior Tyler Vandenbark ran for 78 yards on 4 carries and 2 TD’s; freshman Joseph Stahley 50 yards on 3 carries and a TD; freshman Darian Wilkening 25 yards on 9 carries; senior Mitch van Duren 17 yards on 4 carries and a TD; junior Michael Bouchier 13 yards on 3 carries; sophomore Saxon McKean 8 yards on 2 carries and junior Jacob Alvarez 7 yards on 2 carries. Senior quarterback Tanner Serrato was 2-for-3 passing for 49 yards and a TD. Vandenbark caught both passes and had the TD reception. On defense Van Duren had 10 tackles, junior Jordan Karg 6, Vandenbark 5, senior Brian Agnew 4, junior Caleb Knowles 3 and Serrato, senior Dustin Price and Wilkening 2 each. Serrato had 3 interceptions, one for a touchdown, and freshman Eric Lovell recovered a Stratton fumble. “I thought we played well,” said Fleming Coach John King. “I thought it would be a good game because defensively it looked like Hi-Plains would be able to do some things against us. “But defensively we smothered them early, frustrated them and took them out of their game early.” Fleming has by far dominated its opponents this season by scoring 669 points (61 PPG) and allowing just 217 points (20 PPG). The Wildcats have rushed for 3,472 yards, led by Chintala with 2,077 yards on 164 carries and 36 touchdowns. Vandenbark has tallied 328 yards on 42 carries and 5 TD’s; Stahley 268 yards on 30 carries and 3 TD’s; Wilkening 255 yards on 34 carries and 2 TD’s; McKean 182 yards on 19 carries and 2 TD’s; Van Duren 176 yards on 25 carries and 3 TD’s; Alvarez 58 yards on 11 carries and a TD; junior Jeremy Richhart 49 yards on 8 carries and a TD; senior Kyle Lengfelder 34 yards on 5 carries and a TD; Karg 32 yards on 8 carries; Bouchier 17 yards on 7 carries and Serrato 12 yards on 5 carries. Serrato has had an outstanding season throwing the football by completing 53-of-101 passes for 992 yards and 20 TD’s and only one interception. Knowles had caught 16 passes for 244 yards and 8 TD’s; Vandenbark 14 catches for 121 yards and 2 TD’s; Chintala 10 catches for 187 yards and 3 TD’s; Agnew 10 catches for 185 yards and 4 TD’s; Price 4 catches for 126 yards and a TD; Lengfelder 3 catches for 28 yards Serrato one TD catch for 44 yards; Wilkening one catch for 40 yards; Stahley one catch for 29 yards; freshman Ben Lambrecht one catch for 23 yards and Karg one catch for 10 yards. On defense Chintala leads the team in tackles with 85; Serrato has 83; Van Duren and Vandenbark 61 each; Lengfelder 54; Agnew 37; Price, Karg and Knowles 36 apiece; Richhart 22; Lambrecht 13 and Wilkening 12. Van Duren has 3 quarterback sacks, Lengfelder 2 and Vandenbark one. Serrato is by far the leader in interceptions with 16 and Lengfelder and Price one each. Price has recovered 4 fumbles; Vandenbark and Serrato 3 each; Knowles 2 and Van Duren, Lengfelder, Agnew, Lovell, Chintala, freshman Neil Lovell and McKean 1 each. The only loss Eads has suffered this year came against Deer Trail by a 46-32 score on Sept. 29. But the Eagles got even with Deer Trail with the semi-final victory Saturday. Eads has scored 648 points (59 PPG) this season while allowing 216 points (20 PPG), which is comparable to Fleming. “Eads is similar to us,” King reported. “They like to come right at you and challenge you and see if you can stop them. It should be a tough game.” Hosting a third straight state championship game is unusual for any team. King and the Wildcats are very honored to have that opportunity. In 2010 Fleming hosted Idalia in the state championship game and lost 70-36. Last year Fleming hosted Otis in the title game and rolled to a 62-28 victory, winning the first-ever boy’s state title in any sport at Fleming High School. On Saturday the Wildcats have the opportunity to win a second straight football state title once again on their own field. “I don’t know who smiled upon us to be able to host the state championship game for the third straight year, but we really appreciate it,” King said. “It’s more special to host it and the kids are looking forward to it. “We will go through the same routine this year to prepare for the game. The kids are very focused on the game and the seniors want to go out with another state championship.” Fleming Wildcats seeking back-to-back state titles Northeastern Junior College (NJC) is announcing the dates for its 2012 Youth Basketball Tournaments at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.
