“They scored at least 15points in transition.” DeCorseysaid. “We got caught trying torebound with only one guyback, and then didn’t do a goodjob getting back in transition.”

While he would have ratherleft Annandale with a victory,DeCorsey said he and his teamlearned, “If we play solid de-fense, we give ourselves achance to win every singlenight ... I’m conflicted becauseI’m upset we lost, but there’sstill a lot we learned lastnight.”

The Panthers also need toshore themselves up offensivelyin order to beat quality teamslike Annandale.

“We have to score more than54 points against a good teamlike that,” DeCorsey said.“There are so many things of-fensively we need to work on ...we just don’t put enough pres-sure on defenses.”

With 10 days off before BellePlaine comes to town on Dec.28, DeCorsey plans to focus histeam on themselves, rather thanan opponent.

“We’re going to be more con-cerned with ourselves for aweek,” DeCorsey said. “Thatwill be nice, because we’ll beable to just work.”

***— As has been common over

the past three games, MasonGoettl was tasked with guard-ing the opposition’s best player,

in this case, Annandale forwardChase Knickerbocker.

Through six games Knicker-bocker has averaged 22 points.Against Goettl and the Pantherdefense, the junior finishedwith only 11.

“That’s really a credit toMason (Goettl),” DeCorseysaid. “(Knickerbocker) didn’tget clean looks until Goettl gottired. When Mason (Goettl)wasn’t tired, he was frustrated.”

— Endurance of his startersis something DeCorsey saidwill be addressed over thebreak, along with finding moreplayers to come off the benchso his starters can rest.

“I have to start playing moreguys,” DeCorsey said earnestly.“Keaton (Anderson) is not inshape yet and we’re still not100 percent healthy, so thatmakes it extremely hard to stayin close games like (against An-nandale).”

— With the aggressiveness ofTeddy Petersen at point guardleading the sophomore into foultrouble at times, DeCorsey hasfound a couple options on thebench in Reed Wawrzyniak andMason Albrecht, when Petersen

needs to sit.Wawrzyniak came in and

sparked the Panthers a coupleweeks ago against Norwood-Young America with a pair ofhustle plays that “really savedour butts,” DeCorsey said.

But against Annandale, theCardinals posted up down lowagainst the smaller sized junior,a successful tactic used lastyear, and found some easybuckets. So Albrecht came infor a little more size and heldhis own, DeCorsey said.

“We went with Mason (Al-brecht) who has more size, andthey couldn’t do that againsthim,” DeCorsey said. “For hisfirst substantial amount of min-utes in a varsity game, I thoughthe did pretty good,”

While he knows he has someoptions when Petersen needs arest, DeCorsey admitted his de-fense has a “toughness” about itwhen he’s out there.

“We lose a lot of toughnesson the defensive end whenTeddy (Petersen) isn’t in there,”DeCorsey said. “Because hehelps everybody on defense.”

The win improves GSL to 5-1, with the Panthers undefeat-ed at home so far this year. De-feating LP/HT was a big step, mostly because of the wayGSL responded after losingbig to New prague, Otto-Fish-er said.

news when the doctor in-formed me that it’s, “some-thing you should fully recoverfrom.” Awesome. “But it’llprobably be something thatgives you problems later inlife.” Not awesome.

I’m not really surprised, be-cause I seem to find myselfvisiting the doctor for a num-ber of sidelining ailments atthis time of year.

When I was still attendingschool here at Glencoe-SilverLake, my parents had a habitof scheduling necessary sur-geries during the holidaybreak so I wouldn’t miss anyschool.

In fifth grade my tonsilswere removed during the holi-day lull.

Fast forward six years andonce again I’m plopped on my

parents’ couch as a wisdom-toothless junior.

This particular instancewasn’t as bad, as I had asteady supply of puddingcoming my way, and a Vi-codin prescription that left thelights on the tree looking extravivid that year.

So I guess I shouldn’t besurprised that just when itlooks like I might have sometime off, I end up with whatlooks like a robot finger fromthe metal splint. Though itwas handy for scaring littlecousins this past weekend. “Ifyou touch my finger, mywhole body turns into arobot!”

Nobody touched my finger.Well, my brother tried, buthe’s been somewhat of a jerkfor 30 years, so I’m used to it.

Regardless, though, I’mlooking forward to the break. At least I think I am. The doc-tor told me that if my fingerdoesn’t start to improve, evenslightly, over the next weekthat I may be looking at sur-gery.

Knowing my luck, the deci-sion will somehow be madefor me, with a surgery takingplace over spring break. Oth-erwise I’m holding out untilnext December. Maybe bythen I’ll have figured out howto type more efficiently withnine fingers, because rightnow the whole right side ofthe keyboard is like spinning agiant grammar mystery wheel.

Once again, here’s to hop-ing anyway.

Peter, outscoring the Saints 45-31. GSL then came out victori-ous over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/JWP 43-30 to capoff the working week.

Saturday in Richfield, GSLopened the Charlie TurnerDuals with a big 44-24 victoryover Roseville.

The following round, thePanthers just could not edgethe eventual championshipteam from Eastview, falling 32-31, putting them in contentionfor third place against Hopkins.

Angry about missing out onthe championship, the Panthersbeat Hopkins down 64-20.

Last week Wurm said he’dlike to go 7-0 in the week lead-ing up to the break. Going 6-1is a close second, especiallyconsidering the Panthers lostby one point. Coach Wurm saidhe now has a better feel for histeam.

“I think we have a prettygood gauge of just how goodwe really are,” Wurm said.“We know we can do it if weput our minds to it, so I havepretty high expectations. Iknow they’re better than whatthey are, but they’ve got to re-alize that they’re better.”

Another reason he’s so

pleased with his team comesfrom a win Eastview has underits belt.

“Eastview beat Shakopee, and Shakopee beat ScottWest,” Wurm explained. “Sothat means that we’re rightthere with (Scott West),” one ofthree teams other than GSLWurm believes will be vyingfor a state tournament berthfrom Section 2 this year.

Wurm’s Panthers are now offuntil Thursday, Jan. 2, whenthey host the Watertown-MayerRoyals. GSL then travels toOgilvie on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Pastor’s CornerPastor James GomezGood Shepherd Lutheran Church, Glencoe

So, I’ve been reading the Chronicles of Narnia lately. I got through the first book “The Magician’s Nephew” in a couple ofdays, and started in with “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” immediately.

I started thinking about the movies I’ve enjoyed over the years…the ones in sequence, like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. When those movies came out, they were great…but, there was something missing…like, it wasn’t the whole story.

But, it wasn’t the ending that was missing. It was the beginning. Where did these characters come from? What is the historyof the people and places here?

When the prequels to these movies finally came out, there was great excitement. It’s interesting, because most of the time, you sit on the edge of your seat waiting to see what’s going to happen next…but, in these prequels…you weren’t waiting to seewhat would happen. You were excited…to see what did happen. The “How”, “Where”, “When” and “Why” were all left dan-gling…and, inquiring minds want to know.

The Christmas story is like that. Jesus is the promised Messiah. He is the main story – not just His birth, but His life, deathand resurrection, too. That’s the part we know best, I think. But, I find it absolutely fascinating to know the prequel – the OldTestament is full of answers for the “How”, “Where”, “When” and “Why” questions we might ask!

But, there’s more to the story on the other end, too. What the future holds isn’t exactly clear…except that God has a long his-tory of keeping His promises. So, we can trust that the story will end with His victory over the Devil, and our eternal life inheaven.

I look forward to finishing the series. I am excited to see how everything turns out in the end! Right. I’m excited to finish thebooks, too. Merry Christmas!
