Feb. 10, 1920 to Sept. 2, 2009 By Ken McDowell Sports Editor After being blanked in the season opener Thursday at home by the Valley Lady Vikings, 1-0, the Sterling Lady Tiger Diamond Girls have plated 29 runs in their last two games. On Tuesday the Lady Tigers hosted Platte Valley in Patriot League action and rolled to a 15-0 victory in 5 innings. On Saturday, just a couple of days after being blanked by Valley, Sterling traveled to Brush and won 14-0 in 5 innings. “It’s too bad we couldn’t have used some of those 29 runs in the first game,” laughed Sterling Coach Bob Knudson. “But we have put together two business- like wins. “We have pitched well and Kylie (Ross) did a good job today. I feel like we have four pitchers we can throw at any time, and I think that’s an advantage we have over other teams. We are also playing good defense.” In Tuesday’s win over Platte Valley, Sterling plated 3 runs in the first inning, 4 in the second, 7 in the third and the 15 th tally in the fifth. Sterling banged out 12 hits, led by senior Dallas Magnusson who did the job at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Junior Halee Woltemath was 3-for- 4 with a double and a run scored; junior Lauren Szabo was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs scored; junior Jenna Knudson was 1-for- 2 with 3 runs scored; sophomore Taylor Knudson was 1-for-3 with 3 runs scored; junior Alexis Rutz was 1-for-3 with a run scored and junior Megan Kaiser was also 1-for-3 with a run scored. Ross was outstanding on the mound in her 2014 debut as a starter, working all 5 innings and allowing just 1 hit, which was a lead-off double in the second. She fanned 6 and walked only 1 batter and set down the last 8 hitters she faced. In the season opener Thursday against Valley, Sterling entered the contest ranked number 1 in Class 3A and Valley second. Magnusson locked into a scoreless pitcher’s dual with Valley senior Bridgette Hutton until the top of the seventh when the Lady Vikings scored an unearned run, and held on to win 1-0. Magnusson allowed just 5 hits while striking out 9 and issuing no walks. Sterling was held to just 2 hits – 1 each by Rutz and Kaiser. Valley went on to lose by a 1-0 score Saturday at home against the defending state champs, the Strasburg Lady Indians. On Friday Sterling was slated to host Scottsbluff, Neb., but that game was rained out and will be played Wed., Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. in Scottsbluff. In the 14-0 league triumph over Brush Saturday, Woltemath was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored; Jenna Knudson was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored; Rutz was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored; Taylor Knudson was 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored; Kaiser was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles; Ross was 1-for-2 with a run scored and Szabo and senior Tessa Wilson were both 1-for-3, each scoring a run. Magnusson picked up the win and allowed just 2 hits with 9 strikeouts and no walks. Sterling will play at Lyons Thursday and will not play again until Sept. 5-6 in the Berthoud Tournament. SHS Diamond Girls roll to easy victory Sterling first baseman Megan Kaiser makes a diving catch in the season opener Thursday against Valley and along with third baseman Halee Woltemath, makes sure a Valley runner stays put at third base. On Tuesday Fleming opened the 2014 volleyball season in Akron and made sure another defeat to the Class 2A powerhouse would not happen by winning in 4 games, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 25-20. “Since this was our first game there were some jitters,” observed Fleming Coach Derek Herbert, whose Lady Wildcats are ranked number 1 in 1A. “But we did enough good things to win. “Our blocking needs to get better, but Akron is a very good team again this year. They beat us last year during the regular season, so it was nice to open the season with a win against them.” Senior Timmi Keisel, who was 1A Player of the Year last season, led Fleming in kills with 16, followed by senior Deb Kurtzer and freshman Alli Keisel with 8 each and senior Saige Herbert 6. Senior All-State setter Rachel Frantz had 34 assists. On defense, Kurtzer led in digs with 14, senior All-State libero Megan Chintala had 12 and Herbert 11. Chintala and Alli Keisel each served 3 aces and Kurtzer 1. The Lady Wildcats will not play again until Fri., Sept. 5 when they travel to Idalia for another non- league match. Fleming's first home match is Sept. 11 against Peetz. Defending Class 1A state champs open 2014 with victory over Akron
