Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for the reception and dinner is served at 12:00 noon. Introduction of the new Hall of Fame in- ductees follows dinner. I have chosen this method to communicate with you for several reasons: We want to keep everyone informed about the new Hall of Fame inductees. We want to make inductees and friends of the Hall of Fame aware of the annual banquet plans so if possible you can attend and renew friendship with former inductees and friends. We want to stay connected with inducted individuals and team Hall of Fame members to be able to answer “Whatever happened to....?” questions. Finally, like all not-for-profit, volunteer organizations, we need your financial support. We incurred a $25,000 expense to revise and move the inductee plaques to a new and improved location. Pictures of the new display are included in this newsletter. We have sold many of the old plaques but this extraordinary cost has depleted our reserves. We need your help for us to continue our mission to preserve and honor the individuals and teams that have enriched tri-county sports history. Please update your address and e-mail address and send us information on your current activities. We hope see you at the March 1, 2009 banquet. Mike Owens - Bradley Basketball (Inducted 1995)

After graduation from Bradley in 1960,Mike played baseball in the PittsburghPirate organization. Following that, hecoached at Limestone, Wheeling,Galesburg and the University of North-

western. He was the athletic director at Moline high school until he re-tired in 2000 where he now resides with wife Judy. They have 3children and 4 grandsons.

NEW GREATER PEORIA SPORTS HALL OF FAME OFFICERS

William “Corky” Robertson, center, was elected the new presi-dent of the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame. Corky was an out-standing area athlete at Peoria Central High School and BradleyUniversity before he coached and became principal at PeoriaCentral. He replaces long-time president Dr. B. Michael Higgins,president Emeritus. Other officers are 1st Vice President LarryDunn, right, and 2nd Vice President Robert Sulaski Sr., left.

Until Dwayne Wade did it in 2008,Peorian and Caterpillar basketballplayer Frank McCabe was the onlyMarquette University athlete towin an Olympic Gold Medal.

The Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame’s mission is to promote the many and varied sports programs in the Greater Peoria area (Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford Counties). Our aim is to honor those men, women and teams that have contributed to the area’s rich sports history. With the cooperation of the Peoria Civic Center Commission,

The Peoria Journal Star, and generous community support we have served the area since 1979.

Ray Ramsey - Pro Football (Inducted 1982)

After graduation from Bradleywhere he was a 3-sports star,“Rocket Ray” played professionalfootball 9 years for the ChicagoCardinals. After professional foot-ball, he returned to SpringfieldLanphier High school where hestarred as a prep, and coachedbasketball and track for 29 years.He retired in 1986. His wife Elsie passed away in 2002. They have 7children and 9 grandchildren. Ray is 87 years old and in the latestages of Alzheimer’s. He is being cared for by his son Kelly whosays his Dad would enjoy hearing from his Peoria friends. His ad-dress is 1901 Marland, Springfield IL, 62702.

Renee Heiken-Slone - Pro Golf (Inducted 2004)

Renee has been the Women’s VarsityGolf coach at the University of Illinoisfor the past three years and her assistantcoach is husband Rick Slone. Reneedoes not play golf as much as she didwhen she won 4 consecutive PeoriaWomen’s City Golf titles from 1987-1990, but enjoys the extensive travel re-quired of a Division 1 coach.

Bob Flanagan - Bradley Football (Inducted 1984)

Bob played in the Bradley football backfield with the great BillyStone. After college he was in the service and later was an FBIagent where he retired after 30 years. Bob and his wife Fran have4 children and 5 grandchildren and live in Mascoutah IL.

Al Smith - Pro Basketball (inducted 1984)

After Bradley, he played 51⁄2 years inthe NBA for Denver and Utah. Afterhis retirement from the pros, he es-tablished a cable TV supply com-pany in Colorado and currentlyworks with boys in Franklin, NewJersey. Reflecting on his basketballcareer he said he wanted to go onrecord saying “the best basketball

guard he ever played against - high school, college and pros - wasDave Golden from Pekin.”

Michael Jordan played his first pro-fessional basketball game in aChicago Bulls 1984 exhibition gameat the Peoria Civic Center Arena.

June 20, 1898, JoeMcGinnity from MarshallCounty in Illinois pitched21 innings for Peoria intheir victory over St.Joseph at LakeviewPark. He often pitchedboth games of a double

header earning him the nickname “Ironman”. He was 28 when heentered the majors and won more than 20 games in 9 of his 10year career. In 1904 pitching for the New York Giants he had hisbest season winning 35 games and losing only 8. He was in-ducted into The Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.

In December 1940 Bradley defeatedUCLA in the old Peoria Armory 52 to49 and held their 4-sports star JackieRobinson to 12 points.

New Plaque Display At The Peoria Civic CenterBecause of changes to the Peoria Civic Center complex, the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame inductee plaques that were dis-played on the inside walls of the arena have been moved providing a better and more accessible location on the outside walls.We thank the Peoria Civic Center Authority for their continued support of Greater Peoria sports history.
