Schneider also was happy that several of the wrestlers were able to snare bonus team points by winning by fall. “Overall, I’m happy with the guys who medaled,” he said. “We had three seniors place and three sophomores.” With the conference tournament coming up this weekend at Southmoore, Schneider said he is still tweaking the lineup. And the conference tournament also allows Schneider to bring more of his team along. “We’ve still got some work to do,” he said. However, when his No. 14 ranked Yukon boys lost a big lead and found themselves trailing at halftime Saturday, he decided to see what his team was made of. The Millers not only came back to win the game, but took home the first place in the Weatherford Tournament. “It was good to be in a different situation instead of just leading from the start. It’s good for our guys to battle back,” Ritter said. “We found a way.” The tourney started on a high note for Yukon (8-2). They rolled over the Amarillo Flames 79-51. That pushed them into a semifinal matchup with No. 11 Tuttle (4A). Led by Justus Reister, the Millers knocked off the Tigers 76-63. The senior forward posted 34 points and 10 rebounds in the victo- ry. Reister shot 9 of 12 from the field and was 13 of 14 from the free-throw line in 30 minutes of action. “We haven’t had anyone do any- thing like that in a long time around here,” Ritter said. “Cameron Martin was the last guy to score 34 points here since I’ve been here.” Reister gave the credit to his team- mates for his career night. “I was knocking down a lot of free throws. That was a part of it,” Reister said. “My team was setting me up to score a lot. They were giv- ing me good passes, good assists. I was getting rebounds, putting them back up.” Brayden Dutton added 14 points for the Millers. Yukon met up with No. 19 Guthrie (5A) in the finals Saturday night. The Millers were in control at the start, but then the second quarter came, and everything fell apart. They were held to four points and no assists while committing six turn- overs. At one point in the third, the Millers were down 13 points. But Ritter said that is when his team began to figure things out. Yukon went on to win 51-45. “I said we’re halfway through the season. Let’s just go play some man and see if we can dig ourselves out of a hole,” Ritter said. “We haven’t been in that type of situation a whole lot lately. It was good to see them battle back.” The Millers forced Guthrie into 17 turnovers and won the rebound bat- tle 33-23. Carson Lambakis and Colby Baker each scored 14 points to lead the Yukon charge. Lambakis also led the team in assists with six. Dutton chipped in with 9 points and three assists. Foul trouble held Reister to eight points in 18 minutes of work. After taking on No. 18 Deer Creek on Tuesday, the Millers do not have another game until Jan. 21 when they travel to Stillwater. After three days of competition, they came away with a second-place finish. “Thursday and Friday, I thought our fight and togetherness was outstanding,” Yukon coach Roy Wyckoff said. “I thought we had two good wins over two solid teams. I was real- ly pleased with that. “Anadarko, the team we played in the finals, is really, really good. We weren’t pleased with how we played or competed. They beat us pretty bad. But overall, to take the weekend in total, I was pleased.” The Millerettes start- ed off the tourney Thursday by facing No. 18 Guyman (5A). They were able to hold on for a 49-44 victory. In the semifinals Friday, Yukon took on No. 9 El Reno (5A). They slowed down El Reno and earned a 50-39 win. While Sydney Brown led all scorers with 26 points, Wyckoff gave credit to the team’s overall defense. “Friday, I was most pleased with defensive- ly and shutting down Ashlynn Evans, who is El Reno’s leading scor- er,” Wyckoff said. “We did a really good job. We held her to six points. And it was real- ly a team effort. We switched different girls on her, but we defended her as a whole team.” That set up a match- up with No. 1 Anadarko (4A) in the champion- ship game Saturday evening. The Miller- ettes fell 70-21. “I do think we were worn down,” Wyckoff said. “We are asking our girls to play lots of minutes with a high level of effort with the way we try to pressure the whole game and not sub you. We were a little banged up, a little sore, little tired. Not an excuse.” According to Wyckoff, Yukon began the night playing hard, but wasn’t making shots. That caught up to them as the game wore on. “We look up at the scoreboard, and we’re getting beat pretty handily,” Wyckoff said. “I think our effort started to fall off mid- way through the sec- ond quarter. Partially due to mental and physical fatigue. Partially due to getting discouraged.” Yukon (6-6) got back to work on Tuesday when they faced No. 12 Deer Creek (9-2). They will travel to Southmoore on Friday to take on the Lady SaberCats (0-8).
