GUERNSEY’S GLOBAL MISSION
Award-winning Wolverhampton Grammar School brought in Crown for the first phase of equipping its classrooms with two-tier, twin-tone graphite and grey laminate holdall lockers.
Notes head teacher Kathy Crewe-Read on the school’s website: “A challenging education requires a supportive, caring environment.” Safe, secure storage for books, files and personal belongings forms an important part of that outlook.
A close-working partnership with Guernsey Ladies College proved the key in Crown supplying the vibrant, friendly pre-preparatory to sixth form establishment in St Peter Port with classroom and corridor storage for a multi-million pound development.Working with Premises Manager Sean Rault every step of the way was Crown project manager Sam Palmer. “The new install was a little different from the school’s usual three-tier locker self-installs we supplied,” explains Sam. “The lockers had to be fire rated to Euro Class C for the new build, which saw classrooms furnished with the most modern fit-outs under its mission to compete in the global marketplace.”Temporary classrooms have been replaced by a new wing to the senior school, with eight classrooms, study skills and tutorial rooms, refectory, music performance room, soundproofed music practice rooms with recording facilities, storage area for instruments, refurbished reception area and full disabled access with lift.

This is part of a planned long-term upgrade of the school’s classrooms,” says Crown project manager Sam Palmer, “and we’re delighted to be working closely with one of Britain’s leading independent day schools – and one of its oldest, founded in 1512 by the then Lord Mayor of London.

“DEGREE OF DIFFERENCE” AT UWE CENTRE FOR SPORTWhen the University of the West of England’s (UWE) Centre for Sport decided to upgrade its changing areas it sought the same style of provision – only different.
The maple lockers were fitted when the Centre opened 12 years ago and were showing their age. “We wanted a new feel and new floor within the same framework,” explains Laurence Gully, the Centre’s Operations Manager for Estates and Facilities.
As the largest education provider in the South-west of England, UWE attracts 10,000 students alone at its Frenchay Campus, north of Bristol.

Following feedback surveys and an extensive locker procurement and tendering process, UWE selected Crown
for the fit-out, who, says Laurence, proved “the standout choice”.
“We had asked suppliers for the same look as before but with a fresh approach. Only Crown offered a different take,” adds Laurence.
“Project manager Spencer Grimwood picked up the red and black theme of the University logo and thought outside the box to create more floor space, easing circulation round the changing rooms. It has worked really well for us.”
Crown fitted two-tier clothes lockers in male and female changing rooms, with solid oak slat seating mounted on stainless steel legs completing a finely appointed
and finished fitout, along with hardwearing non-slip vinyl flooring.
THE CORRIDORS OF (PUPIL) POWERSome schools and academies enforce rigid codes of behaviour about how pupils manage their lockers, others are more relaxed. “Pupils are pretty well-behaved generally,” says Adrian Charlesworth, Estates Officer at Nottingham High School. “Major issues with vandalism for example are rare.”
With 1,000 pupils aged 5 to 18, the private school has a large locker requirement across three floors - especially so recently, Adrian explains: After becoming co-educational in 2015, the school has been refurbishing the corridors with new carpeting, doors and suspended ceilings, while Crown supply and fit lockers throughout. “As they are sited in corridors, they must look the part,” he stresses.
The old freestanding steel lockers the maintenance team had to rivet to the walls have gone. “Crown install light oak wooden ones, most with shelving, skirting and end panels – so no voids for crisp packets and drinks cans to fall into.
After several summers refurbishing and refitting its corridors, Nottingham High School has transformed its interiors, a key factor in portraying a quality image for present and prospective parents.
