SPORTS IN OUR SCHOOLS
Each of schools taking part in a project specializes in different disciplines. Stu-
dents of all of them participate in regular phisical eduaction activities which inc-
lude team sports or indivudual exercises which are all supposed to contribute
to one’s psychological and phisical develoment. Providing physical education
both inside and outside of schools is crucial in helping young people to learn
and develop life skills. In our magazine each school presents possibilities and
opportunities they offer to their students , moments of glory, best teams or
individual participants. We also show our phisical education venues, equipe-
ment and compare curricula.

Physical Education classes
Physical Education and Sports represent complex activi-ties that strongly influence the personality of the students learning in the high school. Ex-ercise through its multiple forms contributes both to the physical development and the shaping of those particular traits needed for a military career: strength, courage, devotion, dis-cipline, fair play and team spirit.
PE classes in The Nation-al Military High School „Ștefan cel Mare” offer basic physical training for the stu-dents. This includes learning how to play handball, volley-ball, basketball, athletics and exercises for a healthy life.
Team sports and
competitions
Students that want to do competitive sports can choose from a wide palette of sports: athletics, table tennis, football, volleyball, bas-ketball, orienteering and chess.
Each year the school’s teams participate to local, regional and national competitions. The most complex one is the competition be-tween all the National Military High Schools in Romania, an event that takes place over a week each year and sums up all the sports mentioned before.

Sports in extracurricular
activities
Collaborating with other institutions is a priority in our school, and so sports couldn’t be the exception. We organize events and competitions with sports associations from our re-gion.
This way, our students learn to communicate and work with others, at the same time that they practice their skills and measure them with others. Rock climbing, going on the zip line or escalating trees test physical and mental limits, helping stu-dents to push themselves and surpass their fears.

SCHOOL SPORTS
We’re going to talk about the sports
we use to practice in our school,
Agrupamento de Escolas Dr Correia
Mateus. Luckily there are several
clubs which provide outdoor and
indoor sports such as futsal, table
tennis, badminton, basketball, chess,
boccia or athletics.
Our favourite sports are:
Cross-Country
Table Tennis
Chess
Boccia
Futsal
Outdoor Activities
At school there are about two
hundred students who usually
participate in these club activities but
there are some other activities which
only take place in some specific days
of the schoolyear. Each year our
Physical Education (PE) teachers
organize very nice activities, such as:
The Sports Day
Inter-Class Tournaments
Cross Country Competitions
CROSS-COUNTRY
Cross-country is a running race in
which the athletes compete in an
open and sometimes rough ground. It
differs from a road or track running
race due to the ground itself which
may include grass, mud, bush or
water.
The cross-country is one of the main
activities of our school sports
programme. It is organized every
The first round selects a group of six
students (in each category) who
progress to the next stage. These six
top finishers proceed to the district
stage. Afterwards, the new top
finishers get to the national
competition where the national top
finishers are selected.The regional
competition is developed in other
schools. It’s a different experience
because we run with the pupils of
the other schools of Leiria district.
This competition gathers more than
a thousand students of different
ages.
There is an increasing number of
students to participate in this
competition.The first three classified
get on the podium and receive a
school sport medal. Two students of
our school reached the final
competition – the national
competition.
FUTSAL
The most popular club in our school is
the futsal club.
There are two futsal teams in our
school, both male teams:
Team 1- students between 10
and 12 years old
Team 2- students between 13
and 15 years old
Before reaching team 2 students must
practice very hard to have a place in the
main team.
Our school has 2 teachers in the futsal
club and 20 students in each team. This
sport is practiced at the school gym.
Last school year our team 2 won to
series. They were first in Leiria district
and after that they represented our city
in the next championship playing
against Guarda, Viseu, Castelo Branco
and Aveiro. We won this competition as
well and this gave the school the
passport to participate in the national
School Futsal Championship. We played
very well and were second in the final
competition. At school everybody was
very proud of the team.

ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS
Acrobatic gymnastics requires agility,
coordination, strength, flexibility and
balance, in addition to the technical
requirements of jumping.
This sport is practiced in the Physical
Education classes, with groups of five
elements and we do basic positions.
We practice this sport in the school
gym. We have to set up the training
place and pack everything after the
practice.
Our school doesn’t have a club for this
sport but we choose it because we love
acrobatic gymnastics. Our school
doesn’t have a club for this sport but
we choose it because we love acrobatic
gymnastics.
The “base” athlete is usually the oldest
member of the pair or the tallest,
usually stronger to easily support the
pair or the “top”. The top is the other
element of the pair or group with a
shorter and lighter physical structure to
facilitate the work together, also
allowing a greater longevity of the
sport participation.
Moreover this beautiful sport creates
very strong friendship bonds
between the partners, as well as the
spirit of group work and the most
important of all a strong feeling of
trust between the partners and
coaches.
At the end of the year, there is a
school show and our PE teachers
choose a group of students to
participate so they have to learn a
little choreography.
When we do this sport at school we
have to set up the training place and
pack after exercise. This sport it’s
also practiced at the school gym on
the classes of Physical Education.
TABLE TENNIS
Similarly to the futsal group, the ta-
ble tennis is also represented in our
school with two teams but this time
male and female.
Children (10-12 years old)
Initiates (12-15 years old)
TABLE TENNIS
This sport is practiced in the PE classes
and also in the Table-tennis Club. All
the lessons we attend within the clubs
are always beyond the school timeta-
ble.Our school participates in several
inter-school tournaments.
The team of the oldest children has
already represented our school in the
district level competing with other
schools in Leiria. This sport has man-
aged to achieve good results in our
school namely in the district champi-
onship: we got the first place in single
male competition as well as in double
male competition. And all the school
champions have already participated
in the Erasmus Project – “Body”!

BOCCIA
Our school is a reference school
concerning students with special
needs (students with multiple disa-
bilities). This sport is very dear to
all these students.
It is also practiced in two groups,
one group of students with less
motor difficulties and another
group of students in wheelchairs.
The goal of this great sport is to
put the coloured balls as close as
possible to a target ball, the white
one.In our school, this sport is
practiced by students with more
difficulties and also by those who
just want to practice it. Likewise
the table tennis this sport also has
inter-school tournaments where
our school has achieved a good
rating so far. These students are
real champions because they are
the evidence that in spite of all
their handicaps they didn’t give up
practicing sports. In the wheelchair
category our school has already
been district champion in teams as
well as in single completion. This
athlete was our sweet Sana
Chamili.
CHESS
The chess club participates every year
in tournaments, the representatives
of our school are very well placed at
points level.
Chess is very important in our school,
having even students who went to
other schools but continued to repre-
sent this school in championships.
Last year we were regional champions
who happened to be the student
named Marta Peixoto and also partici-
pated in the Erasmus + project. We
also had three students for the na-
tionals in the men's chess category
such as João Peixoto, Marcelo Car-
reira and João Martins.
OUTDOOR- ACTIVITIES
This club have a large number of
students. They love it because it’s
practice on nature and involve
several diferent activities such as :
canoeing, sports orientation ,
archery, sport climbing, rappel and
many others.
The photos represent the pleauser
that our students have when they are
SPORTS DAY
The sports day it’s celebrated on
one of the days of the first week of
june. Every year at this day
elementary schools come to our
school to do sport-related activi-
ties. Students at our school can
help teachers and children who
visit our school.
On that day children can try differ-
ent types of sports, meet some
new ones through organized activi-
ties
INTER-CLASS TOURNAMENT
The inter-class tournament it’s a
competition between classes. Eve-
ry year teachers choose one sport
and the students of every classes
compete with others classes. Last
year we play beiseball, futball and
athletics (Mega-athlete) each stu-
dent have to be the best long
jumper, run 40m velocity , run
1000m and shot put.

Our school is a school with sport
classes. It means that apart from
2 regular phisical education clas-
ses students have also 2 hours
sport practice. Disciplines tra-
ined in our school are: ice-
hockey, handball, short treck, ice
skating, synchronised skating,
and orienteering. During regular
classes students mainly play te-
am sports or do individual exerci-
ses. Other sports include track
and field light athletics.
We are going to present our le-
ading disciplines: figure skating,
handball and ice-hockey.
Here is our ice skating rink.
Figure skating is a sport in which individuals, duos, or groups perform on figure skates on ice. It was the first winter sport included in the Olympics, in 1908. The pro-grammes iclude spins, jumps, moves in the field, lifts, throw jumps, death spi-rals, and other elements or moves.
At our school we generally do
men’s and ladies’ singles, and pair
skating. They train at Hala Olivia
which is 5 minute walk from our
school. Students start training
when they’re in 1st class. In our
school there is a special class for
ice skaters. In the beginning they
have 1 hour of ice skating per day
and 1 hour of ballet per week, but
when they start to train harder,
they’re getting older (like 4th or 5th
class) they start to have 2 hours of
ice skating + extra ballet and gym-
nastics.
How many students are training?
It depends on in which class stu-
dents are. In first 3 classes there
are about 20 skaters in one year.
But later, in 4th/5th class only the
best skaters stay and then they
start to train hard. But don’t for-
get, that they must study hard as
well!
Do they need any special equip-
ment?
They must to have skaters in their
size, at the beginning they don’t
need to have really expensive and
special skaters. But again when
they start train more professional
they have to buy skaters matching
category of ice skating. Figure
skates have a set of large, jagged
teeth called toe picks on the front
part of the blade. The toe picks are
used primarily in jumping and
should not be used for stroking or
The best skaters
Oliwia Borowska and Filip
Bojanowski, they’re our the best
pair skaters. They have won 4
times in a row at Teenagers’
Olympic competition (it’s the
most prestige competition in Po-
land!). They’ve been skating to-
gether for 4 years! They’re doing
an amazing job, keep training to
be even better!
