chance of the Huskies to head down to Toms River for the Group 2 state title game. “If we play two out three of times we would have won the other two times,” said Cannici who was still recuperating from surgery at the beginning of July.

The Huskies fi nished with a 21-7 record and the Dumont head coach gives plenty of credit to his assistant coaches, Mark Ferriera, Peter Moore and Chris DiGiralamo. “I want to give the other coaches their credit,” said the Dumont head coach.

While the loss was painful in one way or another, it was defi -nitely a move in the right direc-tion that had won four straight league championships includ-ing the fi rst Big North title. “We wanted to win something more than a league title,” said Canni-ci. “I told the boys that I wanted to fi ll up the banner.”

While Dumont was the sec-ond seed in the Group 2 North 1 state tournament, the Hus-kies head coach knew that many pointed to the likes of top seeded Glen Rock along with Ramsey and Mahwah as the teams to beat. “Nobody really gave us a shot at winning,” said Cannici. “Even though they had lower seeds, teams like Ramsey and Mahwah were hotter com-ing in.”

But for Cannici, on the day of the game with Ramsey, he real-ized that his team was ready. “They really wanted it,” said the Dumont head coach.

And it showed in the fi rst in-ning when the Huskies scored six runs in the fi rst inning. Ramsey would never been able to wake up. In that inning hit fast and furious as the fi rst Du-mont batters reached base via a single or a walk. In the end the Huskies would bat around.

Dumont’s top hitter, Mike Donellan had a double and two base hits while registering two RBI.

On the mound Huskies top hurler Mike Arnold continued his spotless record, 6-0, while scattering seven hits, striking out seven and allowing only two earned runs in a complete game victory.

And for Cannici the work by Arnold along with several of his players on the fi eld were key for the success of the team. “For high school baseball it is all about pitching and defense,” said Cannici. “You got to have to make the plays. That is the key ingredient for high school baseball.”

Despite the early lead the Dumont head coach knew that the Rams were going to make a push. “You have to stand tall,” said Cannici.

As it turned out a low point in the season might have helped to turn things around.

On April 30 Dumont traveled to Rutherford and the score turned into a football score as

COACH OF THE MONTHSPORTS • FITNESS • WELLNESS

By Edward KensikDUMONT — It was probably

the most painful victory that a coach could ever experience.

The Dumont baseball team had just won its fi rst state sec-tional title since 2002 after the Huskies defeated Ramsey, 8-5 on June 3.

Dumont’s team along with head coach Jason Cannici came streaming out of the dugout to celebrate the state championship, but something happened that Cannici would never forget.

“It felt like somebody had stepped on my Achilles,” said Cannici. “I felt a pop. It felt like something shot my Achilles. I was in pain and I was happy at the same time. It was a weird combination.”

The result was that he would need surgery, but that could not come until the end of the state tournament. He was hoping that it would go until the end in Toms River for the Group 2 state fi nals.

All he had to do was wear a boot and hobble to third base every inning. “It was better off that it was me and didn’t hap-pen to the player,” said Cannici who was in his eighth season as Dumont’s head baseball coach. “You would have had to hold me down to not coach that game (West Essex).”

As it turned out, it was a dif-fi cult 2-1 loss to West Essex at Ramapo College in the fi rst week of June that ruined the

the Huskies defeated the Bull-dogs 24-16.

The Huskies would have to forfeit the game and in turn lost a couple of seeding points in the Bergen County Tourna-ment. “That was my mistake,” said Cannici. “It was not done intentionally and it was not done maliciously.”

After that the coaching staff and the team met. “We held a meeting to put it past us and what is done is done,” said Cannici. “I was really proud of how the players, the school and staff reacted to it.”

While Dumont lost 13-4 to Bergen Catholic in the second round of the county tourna-ment, the forfeit might have been a big boost for the rest of the season.

Before becoming the Dumont head coach, he was the Hus-kies junior varsity coach for two seasons after moving from the Bogota school system. In Bogota he coached the Bucs varsity team for three years.

Before coaching the Dumont head coach played college baseball at Manhattan Col-lege as a starting pitcher. He pitched two years for Manhat-tan before suffering a rotator cuff injury.

In addition to teaching at Du-mont, he also is a pitching in-structor at RBI Sports in Valley Cottage, New York.

Generating 4,150 yards of offense, 2,300 on the ground

when he tucked in the pigskin 191 times and ran, Northern Valley/Old Tappan’s 6-1, 180-pound senior signal caller Devin Fuller is top-ranked in an outstanding New Jersey pool of talented signal callers.

Fuller tops the 2011 Pre-Sea-son Northeast Jersey All-Star team selected by the mem-bers of the Metropolitan New York Football Writers Associa-tion.

Challenging Fuller for the area’s No. 1 quarterback credentials will be Wayne Hills’ junior Kevin Olsen, the youngest of Patriot’s head coach Chris Olsen’s three sons.

Growing up in the shadow of two outstanding older brothers, Christian who played quarterback for the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia and Greg, the current Chicago Bears tight end, the youngest Olsen has big shoes to fi ll. At 6-3 and a growing 195 pounds, he has the physi-cal attributes for success and his sophomore statistics of completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,440 yards and 16 touchdowns with only seven interceptions demonstrated his athletic prowess.

At the top of the area’s out-

DBP’s Hamilton is One of Nation’s Top Down Linemen

standing receiving corps is Don Bosco Prep’s 6-2, 200-pound Leonte Caroo who hauled in 45 aerials for 1,005 yards and 18 touchdowns as he averaged 22.3 yards per reception.

A premier recruiting target for BCS coaches on the de-fensive side of the ball is Don Bosco’s Darius Hamilton, a 6-4, 240-pound defensive Line-man.

His 6-1, 210-pound class-mate Elijah Shumate racked up 67 hits as a junior and is another Ironman headed to a big-time college program.

Pascack Valley’s Zach Cos-ta puts an exceptional foot into the all-star lineup as he punted 42 times last year, av-eraging 42.8 yards per kick, s statistic that all BCS coaches would like to recruit.

Don Bosco Prep’s regular-season schedule is national in scope with the Ironmen open-ing September 16 against Mis-sion Viejo (CA), going to the Sunshine State of September 16 to battle Manatee (FL) and on October 8 against St. Ed-ward in Lakewood (OH).

Bergen Catholic which be-gins in Philadelphia on Sep-tember 10 against LaSalle Uni-versity High School, joins the Ironmen on September 16 in a double header in Dixie against Plant of Tampa (FL) before the local October 1st showdown DBP and the Crusaders.

Ramsey’s Melissa Gwon begins her fi eld season cam-

paign in a career that was not launched until she entered high school. An avid New York Ranger fan, Gwon is the sole returning First Team selected of the Bergen County Wom-en’s Coaches Association 2010 All-Star team. She will be paired up front on the attack line by her teammate, junior Melanie Consiglio, to provide the fi repower as the Rams look to take the step from runnerup to champion of the BCWCA Field Hockey Tourna-ment after dropping a 3-2 de-cision to Northern Highlands in the 2010 title match. Senior Morgan Bishop and junior Rae Caliento are the Rams’ stand-outs in the back line.

Seniors Casey Colan-gelo, Catherine Peeple and Meaghan Weiss will be the

go-to players as the Lady Highlanders strive to retain their county crown.

Wayne Hills will be a factor in the hunt for the Passaic County Coaches Association tourney title as the Patriots of head coach Jenn Badami look to repeat and capture their 11th championship banner in the 36th annual competition. Seniors Kate Freeswick and Hanna Lucas are returning First Team PCCA honorees and will be supported by a trio of second team veterans in Shanna Burchill, Rachel Fiks-lin and Angelica Giammetta.

All members of the Class of 2012 who have been recog-nized as Pre-Season Northeast Jersey All-Stars will receive invitations to conclude their scholastic fi eld hockey careers participating in a post-season event that is being created by USA College Sports, Inc. through a subsidiary, usacol-

A LOOK AHEAD TO FALL SPORTS

By Eric Studnicki

Junior Mike Taran-to starts his third varsity campaign

up front for Ramapo where he netted 18 goals and distributed 16 assists as a sophomore. He began his varsity career as a starter on the back line when h was a freshman. Taranto and his senior teammate Brandon Alvarado, a defensive special-ist, are the only returning First Team selections from the 2010 Bergen County Coaches Asso-ciation’s All-Star Team.

Clifton, the reigning Passaic County Tournament champi-on that ran off a streak of nine consecutive successes from 1997 through 2005, welcomes back senior defender Brandon Guzman, one of fi ve Passaic County Coaches Association First Team All-Stars who are back for the 2011 campaign.

Alvarado, Taranto Return to Propel Ramapo Boys Soccer Program

By Sara Jamshidi

Ramapo launched the Bergen County Women Coaches

Association Girls Soccer Tournament in 1981 with the fi rst of fi ve consecutive cham-pionships. The Raiders have captured 10 and shared two of the 30 championship ban-ners that have been awarded. Immaculate Heart Academy, which claimed its fi rst crown in 1999, will be looking to add to its collection of six outright and one-shared championship when the Blue Eagles seek to fi ve-peat this fall.

Last year, IHA blanked Ra-mapo 2-0 to four-peat but this fall, Ramapo is poised to chal-lenge for another banner. Two of the BCWCA’s three return-ing 2010 First Team All-Stars are players who Raider head coach Paul Heenehan will build his attack around. Junior Jen Andresen and sophomore Caroline Chagares, both for-

Ramapo Duo and Cougar Standout Highlight Pre-Season

All-Star Selectionswards, are among the state’s premier attack players. A pair of 2010 Third Team County standouts, senior forward Amanda Baumgarten and her classmate, defender Maddie Dalie, provide Heenehan with a quality quartet.

Head coach Steve Silver’s Blue Eagles will be a formi-dable once again, possessing a strong defensive unit anchored by senior keeper Kassandra Nunez, a 2010 Second Team selection and senior back Christine LaMonica while junior Samantha Wilkes will provide the fi repower.

Cresskill’s Ani Sarkasian, a junior midfi elder, is the other returning First Team choice of the coaches. Glen Rock has a veteran lineup topped by a quar-tet of juniors Sophie Lederer, a forward and midfi elders Hannah Petrone and Grace Taylor and defender Kendall Day along with senior defender Rachel Yancius. Saddle Brook will be solid defen-sively with senior keeper Melissa

Phelan and look for Mary Help of Christians’ program to make an impact in the PCT.

All members of the Class of 2012 who have been recognized as Pre-Season Northeast Jer-sey All-Stars will receive invita-

Passaic Tech, with two choices among the quintet in senior middie John Gonzalez and ju-nior forward Teddy Forson, are positioned to make a run at the PCT banner they shared with Clifton in 2008.

Midfi elders Walther Cas-tille, a Hawthorne senior, and Pompton Lakes’ junior Enver Caymaz, are the other two who were recognized by the PCCA last fall.

Ramsey, last year’s Patriot Division champion in the Big North Conference with a 9-1-2 mark, will look to repeat with a lineup that includes seniors Doug Fox (D), Kevin Gen-dron (M), Taylor Kammerer (M) and Chuck Slater (M).

All members of the Class of 2012 who have been recog-nized as Pre-Season Northeast Jersey All-Stars will receive in-vitations to conclude their scho-lastic soccer careers participat-

You want to be able to push each other, and that element coming off the field will help

you when you get back on the field.”

—EJ Barthel, Explosive Training Systems Owner

Strength Training/Sports Training Specialist

By Tim SohnEJ Barthel always dreamed

of owning his own sports train-ing facility.

The 26-year-old East Ruther-ford native was an all-state foot-ball player at Becton Regional High School – he graduated in 2003. He went on to play Divi-sion I football at Rutgers Uni-versity, and he received a full athletic scholarship to Univer-sity of Massachusetts. While in college, Barthel was trained by renowned trainer Joe De-Franco, and in 2008-2009, he attended New York Giants mini-camp as a free agent.

“I performed pretty well, and then I got an opportunity to play for Coach [Jim] Fassel in the United Football League in Las Vegas [with the Loco-motives],” said Barthel, who opened Explosive Training Systems, 100 Hollister Road, Teterboro, in 2008. The facility is 5,400 square feet.

The fullback explained that it’s important to provide sports training to any youth who wants to participate, no matter what the fi nancial situation.

“I was an underdog-type

player with a lot of odds against me. I had a pretty stellar career in athletics. I almost feel like it’s my responsibility to pass on my journey with youth ath-letes in the area that are going through the same issues that I was going through. Especially fi nancially, it’s really hard for athletes before this type of training, professional sports training, to fi nd quality train-ers. I wanted to build a facility based upon the things I went through, just sticking to the roots. It’s about athletics. It’s not about money,” he said.

Barthel said that Explosive Training Systems offers pro-grams for individuals, groups and teams. He has eight em-ployees.

“We recommend our athletes train in a group because com-petition is what brings out the best results. However, some athletes do have special needs where they need to train individ-ually,” he said. “The next level in college, you’re going to train as a team. There is no one-on-one training. You want to com-pete with each other. You want to be able to push each other, and that element coming off

the fi eld will help you when you get back on the fi eld.”

Explosive Training Systems offers training in all sports. Bar-thel specifi cally cited the youth program.

”We have a great program as far as success and the youth aspect. Our youth program is phenomenal. We have so many guys in youth wrestling that placed at states this year. We have one guy, who’s probably the best wrestler in the country, in New Jersey. His name’s Nick Suriano. He plays for Paramus. He’s probably our best youth athlete in the program. I think he sets the bar high for any youth athlete in New Jersey. I think he’s lost maybe four matches his whole life,” he said,

If you really want to be a col-legiate scholarship athlete, or even a successful athlete at any level, you have to take it seriously. You have to want to be the best,” he explained.

Explosive Training Systems also offers personal training.

“A lot of women and men are looking to lose weight, tone their bodies and live a healthier lifestyle. So, what our motto with that scenario is, if you train like an athlete, you’re going to look like an

athlete. We want to make sure our clients train like athletes so their bodies can have the same results in terms of muscle, ter-rifi c nutrition, having a nutri-tionist come in and being part of the program to live healthier lifestyles,” said Barthel.

The facility offers training pro-grams for three levels: youth athletes, a high school and col-lege advanced program, and a pro program. It also provides police and fi re academy train-ing. Barthel said one of his cus-

tomers won an Ironman Award with the police academy.

Training programs are based on a four-day workout:

Day 1: Speed and upper-body strength;

Day 2: Agility and lower-body strength;

Day 3: Conditioning, muscle endurance and cardio; and

Day 4: High repetition upper-body strength

“We try our best to keep the business aspect out of training as much as we can by making

our programs the most afford-able as possible. We don’t turn our doors on any athlete that comes in here. If anybody needs help in terms of fundrais-ing to get their team trained, we will make it happen. We will work with any athlete, any parent, because again we’re all here about the basic elements of being an athlete, not based on making money off these kids,” concluded Barthel.

“A player must al-ways be willing to learn, keep in both

physical and mental health and commit to every event the team sponsors” said Bud Cuttito of Paramus when ea-gerly stating his expectations for the Bergen Hawks, a mi-nor league football franchise he owns.

Playing in a state-of-the-art stadium in Overpeck Park in Palisades Park, the Bergen Hawks, made their fi rst year as a minor professional foot-ball franchise a memorable one when they won the 2009 BNEFF (Big North East Foot-ball Federation) champion-ship.

Cuttito’s franchise joined the BNEFF and stayed for two seasons before joining the GDFL, (Gridiron Develop-mental Football League) for the 2011 season.. The GDFL consists of challenging oppo-nents and the Bergen Hawks feel their strongest competi-tion this summer will be the

Bergen Hawks Look to Storm the 2011 Season

DC Explosion and Chambers-burgh Cardinals, which has been one of the top franchise for more than two decades/. However, the Bergen Hawks organization will not under estimate any of their other op-ponents. The Bergen Hawks biggest rival since their cre-ation of franchise has been the NJ Lions which is based in Holmdel.

The NJ Lions remain in the BNEFF which was started in 2007 by Dexter Girven and Alex Alston Jr. The Bergen Hawk outstanding fi rst year paid off and continued well into the play offs. Their initial season ended as the BNEFF champions of 2009.

Cuttito feels that his team must be tough to become champions and stated, “The players must always bring their ‘A’ game as this new league is very tough.” The Ber-gen Hawks know the feeling of becoming champions and do not want the feeling to go away any time soon. The de-sire and drive for the feeling of champions is visible from all

perspectives on the team. The philosophy of the Bergen

Hawks is to play as a team be-cause unity is valued and hon-ored between players, coach-es, and the growing fan base. Cuttito continued, “All players benefi t the team when every-one is a dependent part”.

The Bergen Hawks have recently hired two new staff members, both having NFL ex-perience under their belts. The two new coaches are Lamar Gordon and Rich Scanlon and they will both be on the defen-sive side of the ball. One coach that Cuttito has a lot of confi -dence in to benefi t the team is his son Rob. Before switch-ing to the coaching sidelines for the Hawks, he played four years of Semi- Pro football as a quarterback. He played two seasons as the starting signal caller for the Hawks and was a key contributor to that champi-onship season of 2009. Rob is now the co-offensive coordina-tor for the Hawks. Owner Bud Cuttito eagerly stated “Rob is a true student of the game and an outstanding tactician. He

reads defenses very well and is a strong play caller as de-fensive situations develop.”

With a strong coaching staff, a nucleus united, vet-eran players and a strong fan base, the Bergen Hawks are prepared for the 2011 season and their target is to return to the heights and raise the championship trophy in the air once again.

Low-cost, quality gridiron entertainment for families is the product the Hawks offer to the residents of Bergen County. Unlike Giants Sta-dium, a family may enjoy a Saturday night football game and pop corn and hot dogs from the snack bar without hitting an ATM machine. See you at the next Hawks’ home game.

Many people after high school, and most people after

college, no longer have the privilege of continuing their sports career and are forced into some sort of a corporate world. Luckily for the Bergen Hawks and the Hawkettes, they are able to extend their run as athletes far longer then most without the extreme pressures of a professional league. The Bergen Hawks are a minor league football team and the Hawkettes are its dance team and main support system.

Recently I had the pleasure of speaking with Simone Portera, the Director of the Hawkettes dance team. She was able to fi ll me in on some interest-ing background on the young team, and gave some insight to the passion these women continue to share for dance.

The Hawkettes were founded in 2009, the same year the Bergen Hawks won the Minor League Football BNEFF cham-pionship. It goes to show that the enthusiasm these women have is contagious and helps the football team produce on the fi eld.

The excitement did not stop there for these ladies and they continue to dance their way into their own championships. The Bergen Hawkettes have competed and won several competitions, as well as the Bee’s Nest Team of the Year.

Love for the sport is what drives these women and all participa-tion with the team is complete-ly voluntary. However, some of them use the experience as a stepping-stone and would like to continue onto the pro-fessional level. Portera spoke about some girls who went on to try out for some high level, professional dance teams such as the New York Jets and also the New Jersey Nets.

Portera, the director of the team, is fairly new to the Hawkettes. Before joining the team in January of this year, she was a life long dancer and cheerleader. While working in the school system in Washing-ton DC, Portera was the head Varsity coach of a high school cheerleading squad. When she decided to move back to New Jersey, she was easily persuad-ed to join the Hawkettes by her sister, who is also a member.

Six other dancers on the team, as well as a coach and choreographer joined the Por-tera sisters. When Portera is not practicing or performing with the Hawkettes, she is a campus director in Newark, New Jersey. There she helps underprivileged and troubled children excel through the school system. When I asked Portera where she saw herself in fi ve years, she seemed opti-mistic about her future with the Hawkettes and was just living her life day by day.

Floor plan for Overtime Sports Facility located at 321 Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne.

By Tim SohnWayne resident Sean Thom-

as was working for his family’s commercial construction business, and he had been in-volved in sports since age 4.

“My athletic career got bigger and bigger as I got older, but I never had the opportunity to train at individualized sports like these kids in today’s world. These places didn’t exist,” ex-plained Thomas, referring to sports training facilities like the one he owns and opened in 2008, Overtime Sports, 321 Hamburg Turnpike, in Wayne.

Thomas used to play foot-ball, baseball and golf. Now, he coaches football at the high school level.

He came up with the idea of opening Overtime Sports after what he was seeing in the sports-training world — his nieces were going through this very thing — that they would have to go to different facilities in a variety of towns to get the training they needed.

Originally, according to Thomas, he was just going to rent out the 40,000-square-foot facility after putting some turf down and charge an hour-ly fee.

“The more research that I did, the more involved I got into this thing, the more elabo-rate I wanted it to be. So, what I did was I did my homework. I kept drafting up different designs and layouts, and I hired an architect and brought him on board, and this thing went from being just a huge 40,000-square-foot box with turf in it to eventually throwing in things that I saw would be needed or would make us at least unique from other peo-

sple out there. We cater to all sports out there, not just base-ball or football or something that has a fi eld preference,” he said, adding that structural alterations had to be made to accommodate the plan.

The facility features a 40-yard dash on the turf, a 3,000-square-foot strength center, and a whole area dedicated to batting cages.

“The concept was that you could go under one roof and have all these services taken care of. So, the moms and dads after school aren’t run-ning from one town to the oth-er to the other to the other and scrambling around because in today’s day and age parents have multiple kids, they have schedules, and they have this one doing one thing and this one doing another thing. So, we designed an all-inclusive, all-in-one sports training facil-ity,” said Thomas.

Overtime Sports trains people interested in all sports, from the novice to the pro. In fact, fi ve or six New York Gi-ants are currently training at the facility because of the lockout.

According to Thomas, Jerry Palmieri, the head strength coach for the Giants, visited the facility in the spring when there was word of a lockout.

“He heard about our strength coach [Kevin Ensenhe of K Strength Training], checked out our facility, looked at the turf, the weight equipment, went through the checklist and went back to his team and said, guys, this is a place

I recommend you go to. So, we got his stamp of approval. And when that happened, that helped us reiterate that what we’re doing and what we’ve de-

Thomas, who added that the youth development program develops coordination, bal-ance, speed and agility.

The sports facility offers ac-

football third.The training facility also

helps many local school dis-tricts with fundraising. In ad-dition, two years ago, it joined forces with Joe DeFranco, a well-known trainer from Wyckoff.

They united and created a competition called “The World’s Strongest Athlete,” which consists of pro, college, high school, and police, fi re and military divisions. How it works is, participants come in for a day, they pay a fee to compete, spectators pay a fee to watch. Last year, a dinner was added to make it a two-day event. All proceeds are donated to the National MS Society. However, this year’s event has been postponed due to the uncertainty of the lockout.

“We have the postponed the event because we want to make sure we get the good draw we’ve gotten in the past,” said Thomas.

signed and what we have here is legit,” he said.

Thomas added that Overtime Sports also caters to

• People who want to get involved in sports at a young age

• Those who want to try a new sport

• Athletes looking to get better at each sport they play

• Training for teams• Training for small groups“What we do here is indi-

vidualized sport training. So, it could be baseball, softball, lacrosse, football, whatever you wish to partake in and get better at. But what we also do here is we have a professional strength coach and certifi ed trainer who handles all our strength-training and agility classes. Typically, he likes to begin working with athletes as young as 9 years old,” said

tivities for children starting at the age of 3-5 with the peewee program, in which they learn four sports for 15 minutes each per session — basketball, soc-cer, baseball, and football.

“You never lose their atten-tion span. By the time they get excited and overwhelmed with one thing, boom, you’re mov-ing to the next thing. It’s like that because a lot of time you’ll see a little kickers program or you’ll see a little dribblers pro-gram, and it’s just focusing on one sport. How do you know the kid is really like or going to play that sport? Why not at that age introduce them to all these sports and let them eventually pick from there? We saw that program defi nitely grow last year,” said Thomas.

He explained that strength training is most popular at Overtime Sports. However, baseball comes in second and

SPORTS INJURIESSPORTS • FITNESS • WELLNESS

About 85 percent of elite and recreational badminton play-ers are injured during an aver-age year, 65 per cent of regu-lar runners are hit by the injury bug, and 21 percent of walkers are affl icted (by defi nition, an ‘injury’ is a physical problem severe enough to force a re-duction in training).

When injury rates are ex-pressed per hour of activity, risk of injury can be ranked by sport. Not surprisingly, such rankings show that sports like rugby and lacrosse produce the most mayhem, with about 30 injuries per 1000 hours of activity (rates above 5 per 1000 hours are considered high). Basketball and squash are also problem producers, with around 14 injuries per 1000 hours. Running and high-intensity aerobic dance follow fairly closely, with 11 injuries per 1000 hours (or about one per 100 hours).

A variety of other sports are ranked below, with the number of injuries per 1000 hours of activity in parenthe-ses (‘Injuries in Recreational Adult Fitness Activities,’ The American Journal of Sports Medicine, vol. 21 (3), pp. 461-467, 1993).

1. Alpine skiing (8) 2. Rowing machine exercise (6) 3. Treadmill walking or jogging (6) 4. Tennis (5) 5. Dancing classes (5) 6. Resistance training with weight machines (4) 7. Resistance training with free weights (4) 8. Outdoor cycling (3.5) 9. Stationary cycle exercise (2) 10. Stair climbing (2) 11. Walking (2)

Of course, injuries in sports such as rugby and lacrosse are often the result of impacts with other players — or with other players’ equipment, as in squash. Such injuries are often very diffi cult to avoid.

Your body may be strong, fl ex-ible, and injury-resistant, but if another player’s racket catches you in the eye, you’re going to be hurt, no matter how well pre-pared you are.

However, in sports such as running, cycling, swimming, stair climbing, and walking, most injuries are not the result of sudden catastrophes but oc-cur because of what is popular-ly called ‘overuse’. This is one way of saying that a key part of an athlete’s body simply can’t stand up to the regular pres-sures of training and competi-tion without breaking down.

TAKE RUNNING AS AN EXAMPLE:

To think about how such in-juries can be prevented, it is instructional to consider the sport of running, which can certainly be classifi ed as a high-injury sport. As mentioned, 65 percent of runners are injured in an average year, one running injury occurs for about every 100 hours of running, and run-ners miss about 5-10 per cent of their workouts due to injury (‘In-cidence and Severity of Injury Following Aerobic Training Pro-grams Emphasizing Running, Racewalking, or Step Aerobics,’ Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, vol. 25(5), p. S81, 1993).

Those very high 65-per cent-injury and 10-per cent-absence rates could probably be signifi -cantly lower — if runners knew more about the actual causes of injuries, made a few simple adjustments in their train-ing schedules, and routinely strengthened their muscles and joints.

In fact, research suggests that running injuries could be cut by around 25 per cent (Sport for All: Sport Injuries and Their Preven-tion, Council of Europe, Nether-lands Institute of Sports Health Care, Oosterbeek, 1989).

But what specifi c steps should be taken? To understand how to prevent injuries, it is fi rst

necessary to clear away some misconceptions. For example, coaches and runners often be-lieve that males have higher injury rates than females, but male and female runners actu-ally have about the same injury rate per hour of training.

Large numbers of runners believe that training speed, racing speed, running surface, and body weight are closely related to the risk of injury, but research suggests otherwise. If you’re heavier than average, you’re not more likely than a lightweight runner to be injured during a typical year of training, for example.

Likewise, if you carry out most of your training on concrete roadways, you’re probably not hurt more often than the run-ner who pads along softly on forest trails. In addition, your

foot-strike pattern - whether you prefer to land on the heel or forefoot while running — doesn’t have much impact on your injury risk (American Journal of Sports Medicine, vol. 16(3), pp. 285-294, 1988). Such factors are just not very important in predicting injury. So, to keep your body free from injury, it must be strong, and to prevent an injury re-oc-currence, the damaged area must be totally revamped. The key, however, is not to increase GENERAL strength but actual strength during those move-ments which are required and appropriate for your sport. That means specifi c, weight-bearing, closed-chain resistance train-ing which forces the muscles in your body to function power-fully and in synchrony.

VALLEY HOSPITAL TO OFFER BASELINE CONCUSSION TESTING FOR $25

On Tuesday, August 16th, baseline testing will be available in the Kraft Center of the Valley Health System, 15 Essex Road, Paramus. To register an appointment

or for more information, contact the Sports Institute at 201-447-8133

another concussive injury occurs. Such diffi culties are prevented if the athlete is allowed time to recov-er from concussion and return-to-play decisions are carefully made. No athlete should return to a sport or other at-risk participation when symptoms of concussion are pres-ent and recovery is ongoing. In summary, the best way to prevent diffi culties with concussion is to manage the injury properly when it does occur.

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT STEPS• Anytime during a practice or game that an athlete experiences any sign(s) or symptom(s) of a concussion the athlete should discontinue play for that day.• Seek medical attention to evaluate injury.• Monitor symptoms; if symptoms worsen, go immediately to the nearest emergency room.• If applicable, take a follow-up ImPACT cognitive test within 2-3 days following the injury.• Return to physical activity only after being symptom-free and only after being cleared by a medical professional experienced in treating concussions.• When cleared by a medical professional with experience in treating concussions, an athlete may begin a supervised progressive return to physical activity. The progression should be from low intensity,

non-contact activities to more intense game simulation activities and spread over several days.• Stop activity if any symptoms return and seek medical attention.

ImPACT TESTINGAt the forefront of proper con-

cussion management is the im-plementation of baseline and/or post-injury neurocognitive test-ing. Such evaluation can help to objectively evaluate the post-in-jury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus pre-venting the cumulative effects of concussion.

ImPACT (Immediate Post Con-cussion Assessment and Cogni-tive Testing) is a user-friendly, computer-based testing program specifi cally designed for the man-agement of sports-related con-cussions. ImPACT is currently the most widely utilized computer pro-gram and has been implemented effectively across high school, collegiate, and professional levels of sports. ImPACT is suitable for athletes ages 12 and older.

It is a 20-minute battery of neurocognitive evaluations, in-cluding measures of verbal and visual memory, attention span, brain processing speed, and re-action time. Ideally, athletes fi rst complete a baseline ImPACT test prior to playing sports. If an ath-lete subsequently experiences a concussion, he or she is re-tested and the baseline data is com-pared to the post-concussion data to monitor recovery and determine when it is safe for the

CONCUSSION IS BRAIN INJURY

A concussion is a mild, trau-matic brain injury usually occur-ring after a blow to the head. Al-though the majority of athletes who experience a concussion are likely to recover, an unknown number may experience chronic cognitive and neurobehavioral diffi culties related to recurrent injury.

This constellation of symp-toms is referred to as post-con-cussion syndrome, which can be disabling and, in some cases, permanent for an athlete.

In addition to post-concussion syndrome, suffering a second blow to the head while recover-ing from an initial concussion can have catastrophic conse-quences as in the case of sec-ond impact syndrome. Second impact syndrome is a life-threat-ening condition in which a sec-ond concussion occurs before a fi rst concussion has properly healed, causing rapid and severe brain swelling. Second impact syndrome can result from even a very mild concussion that oc-curs days or weeks after the ini-tial concussion.

Signs and symptoms of a con-cussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks af-ter the injury. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away. Concussion severity varies widely, and the number of signs and symptoms vary also. Serious injuries may show few symptoms. In fact, less than 10 percent of concussed athletes lose consciousness.

Athletes that are not fully recov-ered from an initial concussion are signifi cantly vulnerable for recurrent, cumulative, and even catastrophic consequences if
