Sports Day Sports Day this year is in just two weeks’ time and planning and training is well underway. A full program is attached to the newsletter so that you can plan to be here for important parts of the program for your child. We thank Kirsty Hayes and Elzabe Steyn, the coordinators of events, for all of the work they have put into planning.

There is a special lunch that students have had an opportunity to order from the canteen. The Glenelg Community Club will also have drinks and food available. Lunch will be on sale between 12 and 2.00pm but please be aware that it is cooked freshly so there may be a wait on the food items. The P&F have also organised both a coffee and a pizza van for purchases throughout the day. The school Canteen will be open for tea coffee and cakes at recess and lunch time for parents that would like some refreshments.

Students are to come dressed in their team colours and to wear sunscreen. Term 3 is not a hat term but you may like to have your child in a coloured hat or cap to protect them from sunburn when outside in the sun all day. Please make sure your child’s name is clearly marked in the hat so that hats that are left on the grass might be promptly returned. Events start at 9.05am on Glenelg Oval with the House Captains welcoming everyone to the event, and finish with the whole school relay and then presentations at the end of the school day at 3.15pm.

Surveys As we near the end of term 3, it is a time of reflection for us here at school. To this end we have asked the students to complete a short survey to provide feedback to their teacher on the learning process in the classroom. This is being used by teachers in their performance chats with leaders and more importantly, for feedback to themselves on what is working in the room, what

students feel needs addressing and for future planning. We encourage you to chat to your child about the student survey. We seek your feedback also. This will only take a few minutes and the data provided does guide us in the development of our Quality Improvement Plan for the next three years. To access this survey please follow this link:

https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/parentsurveyglenelg18 The survey is open from now until the end of week 1, October 19th. We do always reflect on and utilise the survey results in our planning and in the Annual Report.

Chess The first tournament is on next week, Wednesday 19th September. This tournament is for the Open, Queens and Rooks division. The second tournament has been postponed until 19th November due to a clash with Sports Day practice. This is for the Bishops and Pawns divisions.

A huge thank you to Peter Wright for all of the time and energy that he puts in to make chess so successful at Glenelg Primary.

Casual Day The casual day for term 3 will be celebrated on the last day of term 3, September 28th. This term we are raising money for Cancer Research. We discussed that

everyone knew of people who were suffering or have suffered from cancer and it is a disease that we all want to try and find a cure for.

Please bring a gold coin donation on Friday September 28 and wear something bright. One of our year 11 ex-students,

Matt Greer, is riding to Melbourne with a small group of friends in October to raise awareness and to try and help to find a cure for cancer. The boys will travel with a support crew

just over 1,000 kms via the Great Ocean Road over 9 days finishing at the MCG in Melbourne. They have a goal to raise $10,000 to help the cause.

We wish them well in this very long ride and ask if everyone can get behind the cause and wear bright colours and donate a gold coin.

Kids’ Council Report The Glenelg Kids’ council met on the 10/09/2018. We discussed about bullying and ways to identify and stop it. Students brainstormed ideas with the SSLs about things we can do to stop bullying and they will be sharing those ideas with

their classes. The statement one team developed was: Bullying is harassing people repeatedly to make themselves feel better by getting a reaction. The 5 steps to confront bullying that we are discussing with our classes are:

Stay calm Respond confidently Walk away Report and get help Stay strong and persist

We also discussed about changing our term 3 charity from white ribbon to instead support a former student who is riding from Adelaide to Melbourne (via The Great Ocean Road) to raise money for cancer. His goal is to raise $10,000, our school are aiming at around $1000. We will be holding a casual day at the end of the term, September 28th. The Glenelg Kids’ Council will meet again in week 10.

Literacy

As we read and hear in the media about the NAPLAN results of children in literacy and particularly writing are not as good as some of the other states, we would like to share with you this poem that a year 3 student wrote for the Write4Fun poetry competition. Congratulations Charlie on a superb piece of writing and thanks for sharing it. Good luck in the competition.

“As the Sun lays down”

As the sun lays down and you close your eyes,

you rest your head and wait for the rise.

It’s rising for another on the other side of the world,

you just need to wait for the Earth to twirl.

Dream of the moon, dream of the trees,

dream of the waves that crash in the sea.

The stars will shine bright and shoot through the sky,

just like the rockets that fly on by.

Tomorrow’s a new day, you’ll find your way through,

keep on trying, don’t dwell on the blue.

This life is special, don’t take it for granted,

live in the moment, your life has just started!

Showcase of learning

We were really pleased to have so many people come along on Tuesday night to the annual Showcase of Learning. We hope that you enjoyed sharing your child’s work, looking at learning across the room and hopefully across the school and then learning a bit more about STEM and the pedagogy that goes with it. It was an evening that staff spent time preparing for and then enjoyed immensely. We thank everyone for their participation
