Can we imagine a future in which physical education inschools no longer exists?
In this controversial and powerful meditation on physicaleducation, David Kirk argues that a number of differentfutures are possible. Kirk argues that multi-activity, sport-based forms of physical education have been dominant inschools since the mid-twentieth century and that they havebeen highly resistant to change. The practice of physicaleducation has focused on the transmission of de-contextualised sport-techniques to large classes of childrenwho possess a range of interests and abilities, wherelearning rarely moves beyond introductory levels. Meanwhile,the academicization of physical education teacher educationsince the 1970s has left teachers less well prepared to teachthis programme than they were previously, suggesting thatthe futures of school physical education and physicaleducation teacher education are intertwined.
Kirk explores three future scenarios for physical education,arguing that the most likely short-term future is ‘more of thesame’. He makes an impassioned call for radical reform inthe longer-term, arguing that without it physical educationfaces extinction. No other book makes such bold use ofhistory to interrogate the present and future configurationsof the discipline, nor offers such a wide-ranging critique ofphysical culture and school physical education. This book isessential reading for all serious students and scholars ofphysical education and the history and theory of education.

A History of Drug Use in Sport:1876–1976Beyond Good and Evil

This book offers a new history ofdrug use in sport. It argues that theidea of taking drugs to enhanceperformance has not always beenthe crisis or ‘evil’ we now think it is.Instead, the late nineteenth centurywas a time of some experimentationand innovation largely unhindered bytalk of cheating or health risks. Bythe interwar period, experiments hadbeen modernised in the newlaboratories of exercise physiologists.Still there was very little sense that
this was contrary to the ethics or spirit of sport. Sports,drugs and science were closely linked for over half a century.
The Second World War provided the impetus for bothincreased use of drugs and the emergence of an anti-dopingresponse. By the end of the 1950s a new framework ofethics was being imposed on the drugs question thatconstructed doping in highly emotive terms as an ‘evil’.Alongside this emerged the science and proceduralbureaucracy of testing. The years up to 1976 laid thefoundations for four decades of anti-doping. This bookoffers a detailed and critical understanding of who wasinvolved, what they were trying to achieve, why they setabout this task and the context in which they worked. Bydoing so, it reconsiders the classic dichotomy of ‘good anti-doping’ up against ‘evil doping’.
