Q&A with Colette Miller Q: How long have you been doing gymnastics? A: I have been doing gymnastics since I was three years old. Q: What gym do you belong to? A: Twisters Gymnastics Q:What is your biggest accomplishment in gymnastics? A: Making the Level 9 Western Nationals Team and placing fourth on floor. Q:Where is the furthest you have traveled for a competition? A: Boise, Idaho for Western Nationals. Q: What events do you participate in? A: I do vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor. Lucy Martin Sports Writer The Xavier High School trapshooting team competes in a meet almost every Saturday either in Cedar Falls at the Cedar Falls Gun Club or at Otter Creek Sportsmans’ Club in Cedar Rapids. The boys’ trapshooting team is ranked eleventh in the state and sophomore Carly Berutti is second in the state for the girls division. “I enjoy trapshooting because it is very different than other sports and it is mostly an individual sport. It’s just you and your gun out there,” junior Ryan Meaney said. Senior captain Ben Powers placed fifth overall. “It’s very exciting and it is a cool, unique experience to shoot trap. I’m proud of my fifth place finish but there is still room to improve,” Powers said. Kelsey Hugg, a member of the Tri-State Gun Club in Montorse earned the top individual girls’ title with a score of 46. Sophomore Carly Berutti shot her best round ever, a 45, to finish second overall. The team finished second with a score of 223. The Saints’ next meet is this coming Saturday, May 19 at Otter Creek Sportsmans’ Club . As the boy’s and girl’s soccer teams near the end of the regular season, the teams are building up momentum that they hope to carry into the post season. The Xavier girls are continuing to show success that has been seen all season. The team experienced the thrill of a close game after narrowly defeating Kennedy in a 3-2 victory in overtime. Sophomore Marinna Shroud scored the first goal in the game, after being called up from the junior varsity team to fill in for injuries. Junior Kayla Armstrong had two goals, including the game winner in the sixth minute of overtime. This was a crucial win to give the team back their confidence, after losing two games the week before against Iowa City West and Washington. “It’s great because we know we can all pull togetherasa team when we really need to,” Armstrong said. “It’s really satisfying after a couple devastating losses.” The Saints next victory was less of a nail biter, as the team defeated Waterloo West in a 10-0 victory. The girls continued to rally, defeating both Cedar Falls and Linn Mar 2-1. The Saints once again narrowly pulled past Linn Mar, with two late goals from senior Lauren Konchar and sophomore Marissa Berutti. The team is 11-2 on the season, and the next game is at Dubuque Hempstead on May 17. The boys’ team has had similar success as the girl’s team. The team crushed Waterloo West in a 19-0 victory, scoring seven goals in the first 15 minutes of the match. Freshmen Luke Koechner and Mason Hoxie both played significant roles in the victory. The team next lost 2-1 to Cedar Falls, despite a first half goal by senior Chad Gilmer. The team next defeated Kennedy in a 2-1 overtime victory. The game was postponed in the eighth minute due to lightning, while the Saints were losing 0-1. The team rallied after the postponement, with a penalty kick from senior Logan Buschette, and an overtime goal from junior Isaac Frisch. The boys next play May 15 against Dubuque Senior, before getting ready for the start of Sub-State.
