Sporting Kansas City make their 2012 home debut on Saturday evening when they meet the New England Revolution at Livestrong Sporting Park in an Eastern Conference matchup. Sporting came away from RFK Stadium with a dramatic 1-0 victory against D.C. United to start off the 2012 season. The Revolution are on the second stop of their season-opening road swing, kicking off the year with a 1-0 loss at the San Jose Earthquakes last weekend. REFEREE: Silviu Petrescu. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in their first meeting ever at Livestrong Sporting Park last year, after the Revolution claimed a 3-2 victory in Foxborough.

New England’s win last year ended a seven-game winless streak against Kansas City. The Revs’ last previous victory in the series had come April 9, 2008, a 3-1 triumph at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

The teams also faced each other in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match, Sporting rolling to a 5-0 on May 25 at the Blue Valley Sporting Complex.

United at RFK Stadium. LAST MATCH

United ‘keeper Bill Hamid had been the story of the first 90 minutes, stopping Sporting at every turn. But in the third minute of stoppage time, second-half substitute C.J. Sapong lost his marker on a corner kick, found space and placed a clinical header inside the near post for the match-winner.

Sporting head coach Peter Vermes had just one newcomer in his lineup to open the campaign. Bobby Convey slotted into the left side of midfield.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Roger Espinoza, Julio Cesar - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, Bobby Convey (Peterson Joseph 85) - Teal Bunbury (C.J. Sapong 75).

TEAM NEWS Sporting Kansas City is now 11-4-2 all-time in season openers, the best mark among all MLS teams. KC has

lost only one season opener in the last 11 seasons. “We set five objectives coming into the game,” manager Peter Vermes said. “The first was to get a shutout. The

second was to get a goal from the run of play. The third was to get a goal off a set piece. The fourth was to pick up points from this game. Fifth was to get our first road win of the season. We got four out of five. I’d say that’s not too shabby.”

A year ago, Sporting scored seven goals from corner kicks, tied for third-most in MLS with FC Dallas, behind nine for Real Salt Lake and Houston.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“We were knocking the ball around very nicely the whole game, but the final pass, the final shot wasn’t there,” said Sapong. “The last 10 minutes, we stepped it up and they couldn’t handle it. You could hear them out there, hoping for a tie. We definitely deserved the win.”

Teal Bunbury, who was given the start and played 75 minutes, was called in by the U.S. U-23 national team for the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

“Teal wore them down for sure,” Vermes said. “Then C.J. was able to come in and give us a shot of energy. You have to give him a lot of credit on that set piece. Everybody was pulling and grabbing in there, and he was able to put his head on it.”

For the second straight year, Sapong scored in the club’s season-opening match. He struck in the second minute of his MLS debut in 2011 at Chivas USA. “That guy [Sapong], you know, Rookie of the Year last year. That’s the perfect way to start the new season, in front of friends and family,” Vermes said. “I just saw the ball in the back of the net, and what’s the best time to get a goal? I’m sure it was electric back in Kansas City.”

With Paulo Nagamura sidelined, Roger Espinoza and Julio Cesar filled the deep-lying central midfield axis. Bobby Convey was given the start as expected in midfield.

“I don’t think there’s a guy I could speak poorly about. I think all the guys were very good in their roles and responsibilities within the game plan,” Vermes said. “Roger [Espinoza] was a monster for sure. His recovery to win the ball back, his anticipation, all that stuff was very good.”

On Tuesday, Sporting defeated nearby Rockhurst College 2-0 in a friendly played at Livestrong Sporting Park. Rookie Dom Dwyer and Luke Sassano scored for SKC.

Here’s the Sporting side: Jon Kempin; Korede Aiyegbusi (Kevin Ellis 69), Lawrence Olum, Cyprian Hedrick, Michael Harrington; Konrad Warzycha, Luke Sassano, Soony Saad; Jacob Peterson (Kyle Miller 62), C.J. Sapong (Michael Thomas 36), Dom Dwyer

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION The New England Revolution again opened the season with a California trip, falling 1-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium in the MLS coaching debut of Jay Heaps. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came after 15 minutes. San Jose winger Shea Salinas scooped up possession from an errant pass and quickly slipped a through ball to Chris Wondolowski. The U.S. international took one touch and fired from just outside the penalty area past New England goalkeeper Matt Reis.

Heaps ran out an all-new strike pair in Fernando Cardenas and Blake Brettschneider, while rookie Kelyn Rowe started on the right midfield.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (4-4-2): Matt Reis - Kevin Alston, Stephen McCarthy, John Lozano, A.J. Soares (Tyler Polak 60) - Kelyn Rowe, Clyde Simms (Ryan Guy 79), Shalrie Joseph, Benny Feilhaber - Fernando Cardenas (Lee Nguyen 69), Blake Brettschneider.

TEAM NEWS The Revolution have now won just one of their last 15 MLS matches, dropping Jay Heaps’ debut as a head

coach in the league. “When we drew it up, we didn't want it to be direct tonight,” Heaps said. “That was their game plan, to come out

and play [it directly]. When we went long – which is fine, I don't mind when we go long so long as we get the second ball and the third ball – we couldn't find the ball. After the ball went long, we couldn't settle in and find our midfield.”

With Darrius Barnes sidelined after suffering a calf injury in training the day before the season opener, Stephen McCarthy was deputized into a central defense role alongside John Lozano.

“I'm learning,” McCarthy said. “I think I've started to pick it up pretty quickly. I'm figuring it out. I'm definitely getting help from A.J., and John too, but it's hard with the language [barrier]. They're both helping me a lot. It's been good.”

McCarthy shook off illness to slot into the first team – and his time in the back four might not yet be over. A.J. Soares limped off in the second half in San Jose with a right knee sprain, and Lozano is doubtful with a right hip flexor strain.

The Revs fielded a completely new strike pair in Fernando Cardenas and Blake Brettschneider, while rookie Kelyn Rowe made his professional debut on the right side of midfield.

“We were a tad off with our passing and that kind of ruined things for us,” Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis said. “The times when they were dangerous, we gave away the ball. We just have to be a little bit better with the ball.”

The Revolution signed midfielder Jeremiah White – eight years after the club selected him out of Wake Forest in the third round of the 2004 SuperDraft. White has played with Poland’s GKS Belchatow, and alongside Benny Feilhaber with Denmark’s AGF Aarhus; the eight years between draft-day selection and signing with the club who took him is believed to be a record.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Shalrie Joseph became the Revs’ all-time career appearances leader with 244 during his 10-year MLS career; he entered the game tied with current head coach and former teammate Jay Heaps.

The Revs saw their winless streak in games played in Mountain or Pacific time zones extended to 17 games (0-12-5), dating back to August 2009 – a 1-0 win at Seattle. The loss also extended the team’s winless run in West Coast games to 11 games (0-9-2).

“I think the second half was a little bit better than the first,” Revolution midfielder Benny Feilhaber said. “We created a couple more chances and maybe tried to play a little bit more. That tends to happen when you're down. I don't know how much you can take that into account, but, at the same time, it's not going to change overnight. There are things we need to work on and there are still bits we're learning to improve upon from last year. I think we'll do better next game. That's where we're at right now.”

Sporting Kansas City and the New England Revolution played to a 1-1 draw to preserve an unbeaten streak that later reached 14 games, the longest in club history. The game on July 30, 2011 marked their first contest at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park and ended in dramatic fashion with a late goal from Teal Bunbury.

New England’s goal came first in the 38th minute when goal-keeper Matt Reis hit a long clearance after a back pass from one of his teammates. The clearance made its way over the Sporting Kansas City back line and to the feet of Rajko Lekic, who calmly placed the ball into the back of the net.

Bunbury’s equalizer came off a deflected pass from Omar Bravo just seven minutes after A.J. Soares was shown a straight red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity while taking down C.J. Sapong just outside the area.

• Kansas City leads the all-time, regular season series between the two teams, 20-13-9.• Kansas City is 5-2-2 in their last nine meetings with the New Eng-land Revolution.• Kansas City has not lost at home to the Revolution since April 9, 2008 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.• Seth Sinovic played for the New England Revolution during the 2010 MLS season. He then went on to post his career high in saves with 11 shots stopped against Kansas City on July 11, 2009 in a scoreless draw.• First year head coach Jay Heaps holds the all-time record while he was playing for New England Revolution for most fouls commit-ted against Kansas City in their regular season meetings, with 34.• Teal Bunbury’s equalizer in the 2011 matchup marked his 4th goal in 2011 and 9th of careeer.• Kei Kamara scored two goals for Sporting Kansas City in their first meeting during the 2011 regular season in 3-2 loss at Gillette Stadium. • Neither Kansas City or New England have ever earned a victory in the series at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.• Revolution’s Kevin Alston and Lee Nguyen and Sporting’s Jacob Peterson all played collegiate soccer for Indiana University.• KC’s Bobby Convey and NE’s Kevin Alston were teammates in the 2010 MLS All-Star Game at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas when the MLS All-Star’s took on Manchester United.

C.j. Sapong steals show | C.J. Sapong scored the game win-ner in the 93+ minute last Saturday at RFK Stadium in front of a hometown crowd against D.C. United. This marks the second year in a row the Virginia native has scored a goal in the season opener.

Sporting Kansas City is 7-0 when Sapong puts the ball in the back of the net. Six of those wins came during the 2011 season, in which Sapong was named MLS Rookie of the Year. Sapong was given his trophy last Tuesday following a scrimmage against Rockhurst.

Bunbury named to US Under-23 Men’s National Team | Teal Bunbury was selected to the United States Under-23 Men’s Na-tional Team roster for the team’s final training camp, being held in Nashville, Tennessee, before the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Tournament.

Bunbury scored nine goals last season for Sporting Kansas City, tied with Kamara and Bravo for most on the team. In 2012 Bun-bury earned the start in Sporting KC season opener and played a large roll in wearing down D.C. United’s defense for teammate C.J. Sapong’s late goal.

Returning 11 starters from Conference Championship | Sport-ing Kansas City return all 11 starters from their 2011 playoff campaign.

In doing so, the club continues to embrace the youth move-ment leaving just three players on the roster over the age of 30 (Diop, Nielsen, Cesar). The team’s average age in 2011 was 26.8, the youngest ever in the team’s 16-year history.

Nielsen named club captain | Jimmy Nielsen was named club captain for the 2012 campaign. Nielsen’s accolades include but are not limited too: 2010 All-Star, 2011 Team MVP, and best goals against average for a Sporting KC goalkeeper all-time. Nielsen also earned MLS Save of the Week honors four times throughout the course of the 2011 season.

Nielsen has already continued to yield success on the field in 2012, opening the season with a shutout victory against D.C. United, tallying his 18th career shutout.

Home Openers | Sporting Kansas City is 10-4-2 in home open-ers suffering just one loss in the last 12 seasons. Ironically, in 16 home openers, SKC has never faced the New England Revolution. The game marks the second match-up between the two teams at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

In 2011, Sporting Kansas City did not play their home opener until June 9th, expieriencing the longest road trip in MLS his-tory with ten games on the road to start the season. When LIVESTRONG Sporting Park was finally open, Sporting Kan-sas City hosted the Chicago Fire. The game concluded in a 0-0 draw.

The first goal at the new stadium was not scored until June 17th when C.J. Sapong notched the game winner against the San Jose Earthquakes in the 31st minute off an assist from Graham Zusi.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION AT SPORTING KANSAS CITY

LOOKING TO CONTINUE SUCCESS AGAINST KCAfter winning the regular-season series in 2011 against Kansas City – their fi rst since 2007 – the Revs look to continue their recent success against KC on Saturday … the Revs have earned at least one point in each of their last three matches against Kansas City, going 2-0-1 since the Revs’ 1-0 win on Oct. 16, 2010 … previously, New England was winless (0-5-1) in six consecutive matches dating back to Oct. 11, 2008.

REVS READY TO BOUNCE BACK AFTER SAN JOSESaturday’s 1-0 loss in San Jose in the teams’ season opener was the third year in a row the Revs failed to win the fi rst game of the season … however, recent history indicates they might bounce back in match number two … after starting the season winless at LA in 2010 (1-0 loss) and 2011 (1-1 draw) the last two seasons, the Revs earned a win in the following match both years, defeating D.C. in game two both seasons: at home on April 3, 2010 (2-0) and last March 26 at RFK Stadium (2-1).

SUITCASE WILL GET PLENTY OF USE IN EARLY 2012Beginning the 2012 season with four of its fi rst fi ve matches on the road, the Revolution continue its road stretch at Kansas City on Saturday … the team will play a single home game – the 2012 home opener against Portland (March 24) – in a fi ve-week span from March 10 to April 5 … after opening the season last weekend in San Jose, the Revs will visit LA and Dallas in upcoming weeks … after returning home from the LA-Dallas road trip, the team will have already traveled 13,290 air miles in the fi rst four weeks of the season … including the team’s preseason trip to Tucson, Ariz., that immediately preceded the season opener at San Jose, the Revs will have traveled 18,030 air miles from the end of February through early April.

SHALRIE STANDS ALONEWith his start last Saturday at San Jose, captain Shalrie Joseph became the Revs’ all-time career appearances leader with 244 appearances in his 10-year MLS career … he entered Saturday’s game tied with current head coach, and former teammate, Jay Heaps with 243 appearances … Joseph became the club leader in starts in the fi nal game of 2011, passing Heaps ... Joseph has been a stalwart in the team’s lineup since 2003, and has served as club captain each of the last three seasons (2010-present).

MATT IS STILL MR. MARCHDespite picking up his fi rst-ever loss in the month of March on Saturday night at San Jose, Matt Reis remains tough to crack in the season’s fi rst month, posting a 4-1-1 career record, an 0.66 goals against average and two shutouts in six career contests in March ... Reis has played at least 20 games in every other month of the season, with April being his second-best statistical month with a 1.02 career goals against average, nine shutouts and a 14-6-7 record in 28 appearances.

FRESH FACES TAKE THE FIELDA total of seven Revs players made their Revolution and/or Major League Soccer debuts on Saturday night at San Jose, including fi ve of the team’s starting 11 … Blake Brettschneider (D.C. United), Fernando Cardenas (America de Cali/Colombia), John Lozano (America de Cali/Colombia), Kelyn Rowe (2012 draft pick) and Clyde Simms (D.C. United) all started, while Lee Nguyen (Becamex Bình Duong/Vietnam) and Tyler Polak (2012 draft pick) came on as second-half subs.

TWO MORE NEW FACES ADDED THIS WEEKThe Revs signed two more players in the last week to bring the roster to a complete 28 players ... after signing midfi elder Jeremiah White on March 9, the team added defender Flo Lechner on March 14 ... the signings bring the roster up to the 28-man limit, and allows the Revolution to use $70,000 extra in allocation money ($35,000 each roster spots 29 and 30 being left vacant), per MLS Roster Rules.

WHITE LONG TIME COMINGJeremiah White, whom the Revs drafted in the third round of the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, fi nally signed with the club earlier this month ... prior to signing, he spent two separate training spells with the team during preseason ... he originally with Serbia’s OFK Beograd out of Wake Forest after initially passing on MLS … after stops in Greece (Panserraiko), France (FC Gueugnon), Denmark (AGF Aarhus, with fellow Rev Benny Feilhaber) and Saudi Arabia (Al-Ettifaq), White most recently played with Poland’s GKS Belchatow ... although no hard statitics on the time between being drafted and signing with a club, MLS believes White holds the league record for longest time between the two events.

GOING WITH THE FLOThe Revs rounded out their defensive corps on Wednesday by signing German right back Florian “Flo” Lechner on a free transfer from 2 Bundesliga side Karlsruher SC ... Lechner comes to MLS after spending his entire professional career in Germany ... he made 12 league appearances and two starts in the DFB Cup in the second half of 2011 with Karlsruher SC ... Lechner spent the majority of his career at VfB Stuttgart, where he helped the club gain re-

peated promotion from the third division of German soccer to the Bundesliga ... he will formally join the team upon the receipt of his ITC and U.S. P-1 Visa.

JAY HEAPS FACTS & FIGURESJay Heaps, 35, is the sixth head coach in club history, and is also the second-youngest active coach in MLS (behind D.C. United’s Ben Olsen) … Heaps had a nine-year playing career in MLS, fi rst with the Miami Fusion beginning in 1999 - when he was drafted second overall in the MLS College Draft before earning MLS Rookie of the Year honors that sason - through June 2001 ... he was traded to his hometown club, New England, in June 2001 where he concluded his career before retiring following the 2009 season … Heaps remains the club’s all-time leader in minutes (21,619) and is second in appearances (243) and starts (238).

WHO’S LEFT?With Chris Tierney suspended for last Saturday’s season opener at San Jose, head coach Jay Heaps was always going to have to name a temporary replacement for him in the starting lineup last week ... however, when presumptive replacement Darrius Barnes went down with a calf injury in training on Friday - the day before the match - Heaps was left with an even bigger quandary ... Heaps ended up starting center back A.J. Soares on the left against San Jose, but the second-year center back picked up a knee knock and was subbed off in the second half ... 2012 second-round draft pick Tyler Polak, a natural left back but only 19 years old, came on for Soares and fi nished the game at left back ... heading into this week’s game, Tierney is once again eligible, but with three of the team’s four natural center backs injured, Heaps now has a center back question.

CENTRAL (DEFENSE) TO THE ISSUEWith three of the team’s four central defenders on this week’s early week Injury Report, Jay Heaps now has a situation at center back for Saturday’s game against Kansas City after last week dealing with a left back situation ... only Stephen McCarthy, who started last weekend in San Jose and just made the positional switch to center back from central midfi eld this preseason, is 100 percent healthy ... A.J. Soares (questionable) has a knee injury, while John Lozano (doubtful) has a hip fl exor strain and Darrius Barnes (out) has a calf strain.

BRAND-NEW FACES UP FRONT A RECENT FIRSTWith newly-signed Fernando Cardenas and Blake Brettschneider starting at forward on Sat-urday against San Jose, it marked the fi rst time since 2003 that the Revs started an entirely new front-running tandem on opening day, without any hold-overs from the previous year ... in every season from 2003 to 2011, the Revolution started at least one hold-over player from the prior year’s season opener for some continuity:• Taylor Twellman (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007)• Pat Noonan (2005, 2006)• Adam Cristman (2007, 2008)• Kenny Mansally (2008, 2009)• Kheli Dube (2009, 2010)• Zack Schilawski (2010, 2011)The last two seasons in which two new forwards started in back-to-back years came in 2002 (Alex Pineda Chacon and Mamadou Diallo) and 2003 (Taylor Twellman and Wolde Harris).

REIS MAKES IT 250 IN ONE AREA ... With his start at San Jose on Saturday, Matt Reis became just the sixth goalkeeper in MLS history to make at least 250 career starts ... he moved into a tie for fi fth place with Tony Meola on MLS’ career goalkeeper starts list ... Kevin Hartman leads all goalkeepers in starts with 382, followed by Joe Cannon (306), Nick Rimando (289) and Zach Thornton (276) ... of his 250 career starts, 215 have come with New England (2003-present) and 35 with LA (1998-2002) ... Reis has 255 career goalkeeper appearances, which ranks fi fth in MLS history.

... AND APPROACHING 1,000 IN ANOTHERMatt Reis enters Saturday’s game at Kansas City with 993 career saves spanning his 15-year MLS career ... when he accumulates seven more saves, he will become the sixth player in MLS history to reach the 1,000-save mark ... Kevin Hartman leads all goalkeepers with 1,377 saves, followed by Joe Cannon (1,232), Tony Meola (1,136), Nick Rimando (1,064) and Scott Garlick (1,021).

ROOKIES IN THE FOLD2012 draft selections Kelyn Rowe, Tyler Polak, Alec Purdie and Mike Roach were each regulars for the Revs on the fi eld during the 2012 preseason, and were among the squad’s preseason scoring leaders… Rowe, Purdie and Roach all performed well in the midfi eld, with Rowe picking up four goals and four assists in seven contests, while Purdie had one goal and two assists and Roach one goal.

POSITIONAL BREAKDOWNThe Revs currently have 28 players under contract … there are three (3) goalkeepers, eight (8) defenders, 12 midfi elders and fi ve (5) forwards on the roster.
