Congratulations to Barry Britt for winning both the 5000m and 1000m at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championships this past weekend in Honolulu, Hawaii. Barry first ran the 10000m on Friday (May 13th) night in a time of 30:24.99 which is the fastest time ever on the track by a New Brunswick athlete

Barry Britt breaks NB record !

Geneviève Lalonde finished 8th at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford University with a time of 9:59.50. This time is the fastest time by a Canadian this year and only 1.76 away from Gen’s personal best set at last year’s World Juniors Championships. It is also under the 10:10 qualifying time required to be eligible as a member of Canadian university team that will compete at this summer Summer Universiade (World University championships) in Shenzhen in China (August 12-23).

New Brunswick queen of the steeplechase does it again!

April 27th, 2011 will be an historic day for athletes with a disability in NB. The New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association (NBIAA) has announced that their 2011 Track and Field Championships will feature events for ath-letes with a disability (AWAD). The NBIAA is offering three Para events: a 100m visual impaired, a 100m wheelchair for any athletes with a physical disability who may require a wheelchair, and a Para shot put that will regroup all physical disabilities. “At the heart of an athlete is the desire to be included and feel part of a team” said Gabriel LeBlanc, Technical Director of Athletics NB. “We are very excited about tthese changes; and congratulate the NBIAA for giving para athletes this opportunity.” In doing this, the NBIAA becomes the first High School association in Atlan-tic Canada to offer AWAD events at their track and field championships, and the second province in Canada to integrate athletes with a disability into their able-bodied high school events. “It’s safe to say that New Brunswick really is ahead of the game. This is a great opportunity to develop para sport in the province as we can now identify more para athletes,” said LeBlanc. “By creating events where all athletes can be involved, we are breaking down the walls of isolation.” The Canada Games have been integrated since 2001 for the Summer Games and 1995 for the Winter Games, giving athletes with a disability the opportunity to represent their province. Most recently, Para athlete Louis Fortin contributed to Team NB’s success at the 2011 Winter Games by winning two silver medals in the cross country ski events. “An athlete is an athlete; they set goals for themselves, face challenges and do whatever it takes to overcome them,” said LeBlanc. “When we integrate disabled and able bodied events, everyone benefits as the focus shifts from limitations to ability”.

Jean-Pierre Cantin quit as New Brunswick's judo coach over a lack of funding. (CBC) Former Olympian Jean-Pierre Cantin is resigning his position as coach of New Brunswick's judo team over a lack of financial support, CBC News has learned. Cantin's judo team won eight medals at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax recently, which was half of New Brunswick's total medal count. That count included two gold medals. After returning to New Brunswick, Cantin told CBC News on Monday that the provincial government is not offering enough funding for the amateur sport. "I need to move on. I am tired to work on a shoestring budget," he said. "I am tired to always beg for money when we do good results like this." Cantin, who made his decision on his way home from the Canada Winter Games, said his judo team is getting a fraction of the government funding that other provincial teams do. "The government knows we are doing it for passion, we love it, they are taking advan-tage of it. And now it is over," Cantin said. The judo coach said it is time for the provincial government to "wake up" or it risks losing more people from the program. Trevor Holder, the minister of wellness, culture and sport, said he agreed that funding for judo is not adequate. He said the government has promised to increase funding by 25 per cent this year, with additional increases coming in the following years. "It's a commitment that we intend to follow through on," Holder said. "I intend to work with the sporting community to make sure that we continue to invest in sports and recreation, in particular, our sports plan."

Athlétisme Sud Est-South East Athletics has been selected as a finalist in the Keg “Thanks-a-Million Grant Program”

Para Athletics were non-existent in New Brunswick in 2007. ASEA decided to make this a part of their developing program. Since then ASEA has introduced Para Athletics to a number of potential athletes. To date 15 athletes with a disability have joined ASEA & train on a regular base. These funds will allow them to introduce more athletes to para athletics. There is also an opportunity to hold camps and clinics as they have done in the past to help recruit new para athletes. The club has more registered para athletes than all but two provinces – Ontario and Quebec. This programs helps not only athletes with a disability in the Moncton area but all over New Brunswick If they are successful these funds will go towards purchasing new equipment for their Athletes such as racing wheelchair that can cost up to 6000$ each. Also the funds will help the team travel to various competition in Canada.

Congratulations to Jebb Sinclair and Chauncey O’Toole who were
