The Albins Off Road Gear Goondiwindi 400 was called off after torrential rain and a hail storm damaged the track conditions. Auricht said: ‘‘Would’ve, could’ve, we’ll never know. ‘‘We were in with a chance, an outside chance, but nonetheless, a chance to take home the 2011 cham- pionship. Having said that, our team believe that organ- isers made the right call on the day and I think those of us that were there didn’t want to race in those condit- ions.’’ After making the 2850 kilometre journey from Al- ice Springs to the Queens- land border town of Goondiwindi early in the week, Auricht and Grant Connelly spent time with Brad Zacka working on their King Shock Absorber set-up and fine tuning of the mid mount Jimco Aussie Special Pro buggy number two. He said: ‘‘We believe we had the perfect package to take on the notorious Goondiwindi melon holes. ‘‘From what we’ve heard from the organisers that drove the whole track on Thursday, it was the best track the Goondiwindi Motorsports Association has prepared. ‘‘We were really looking forward to the technical nature of the drivers’ track.’’ Season 2010 didn’t end well for the True Build Rac- ing team either, succumbing to a massive rollover on a logging track in the Tantanoola Pine Forest at the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro in Sept- ember; the team and the Jimco rebuilding and mov- ing forward for an attack on the 2011 Australian Off Road Championship and the right to don the number one plate for 2012. After an up and down year, the team almost reached their goal, reclaim- ing the number two plate after a tight and hard- fought year. The year started with a fourth placing in round one in Western Australia after stopping trackside to change a flat tyre cost valu- able time. Round two was the low point of the year, the Jimcos gearbox expiring in the team’s local event, the Tatt- ersall’s Finke Desert Race. Auricht said at the six kilometre mark, sixth gear went. He said: ‘‘With all the other gears still driving well, and no sign of other issues, we continued on. ‘‘After passing (Dave) Fel- lows 15 kilometres from the start and taking over the race lead we knew we were in there with a chance for a win until the gearbox went into complete meltdown 50 kilometres into the 225 kilo- metre track.’’ The team decided to replace the clutch of the V8 Chev-powered Jimco with a torque converter, a changeover they had sched- uled to complete at the end of the season, but the gearbox failure at Finke moved the plans forward six months to compete in the rest of this season. The new configuration proved a winner, with Auricht and Connelly driv- ing the Jimco into second place in round three. Round four took the team back to the south east forest where Auricht admitted he was more than tentative about getting back out on the track, with last year’s rollover always in the back of his mind. With Auricht gaining more confidence after every lap, the team ultimately fin- ished in third outright and banked another 15 points, making a do-or-die contest for the number one plate at Goondiwindi. Auricht said after accept- ing number two without a major sponsor and running a small business makes rac- ing at times challenging. He said: ‘‘We have a great team of supporters who as- sist throughout the year. Without their assistance we couldn’t have achieved this outcome. ‘‘While the number one would have been great, back-to-back number two is the next best thing. ‘‘We would like to thank Chris and Julie Coulthard at Autosparky for all their as- sistance throughout the years. Craig Carrison of Craig Carrison Race En- gines who has put together a strong competitive V8 en- gine that has run faultlessly over the past two years and his support prior to and at events has been instrumen- tal. ‘‘Phil Hateley, Kane Naaraat and Jack Spears have been a massive help during the season. Without them at the track helping us to go over the car it would not have been possible to compete. Their enthusiasm for the sport and their abil- ity to have a good laugh during the weekend cer- tainly helps lift the atmos- phere. ‘‘Brad Zacka with King Shocks has aided in a vast improvement of the hand- ling of the car since last year. A big thanks goes to Bluey from Alice Paint and Panel, Brian from Signmaster and Ben and Bryant from Neptune Fib- reglass for their help in repairing the car at the be- ginning of the year and creating the silver bullet for the 2011 season. ‘‘Finally the True Build Racing team would like to thank all of their supporters including True Build Con- structions, Autosparky, Craig Carrison Race En- gines, Holcim Alice Springs, Signmaster, Alice Paint and Panel, King Shocks, GGS Glass & Aluminium, Neptune Fibreglass, G & S Transport, Sporties Cafe & Restaurant, Jack Weld, Al- ice Hosetech, TZ Tuning, Kane Naaraat - kaneophoto.com.au, Tony Byrnes, Phil Hateley, Chris Auricht and Dan Bartell.’’ Track roars to life SPEEDWAY Warren Thomson Greg Hicks won round one of the A-Class Racing Bomber series Picture: MIKE POTTS ARUNGA Park Speed- way put on a spectacle Saturday night with another entertaining night of racing.
