The John Smith's Stadium inHuddersfield, West Yorkshire is a state-of-the-art sports, leisure and commercialcomplex.

Back in 1991 a partnership was formedbetween Kirklees Metropolitan Council,Huddersfield Town FC and HuddersfieldRugby League Club to create a complexwhich would be a versatile sports,entertainment and hospitality facility.At a cost of almost £40 million the stadiumis rapidly becoming known as one of themajor leisure destinations in the north ofEngland.

When the stadium needed to refurbish twokey sports areas and a functional visitor’sspace they turned to the leading indoorsports synthetic flooring manufacturerGerflor for the solution. A high-endstadium would need a world classmanufacturer with products to match.

The requirements that would be neededfor the group class space, a functionalarea and a weights training area would bea perfect fit for Gerflors TaraflexTM Sport MEvolution and GTI Uni flooring products.The gym and recreational space at JohnSmiths Stadium would need a total of320m2.

The client Kirklees Active, would as part ofthe project, specify TaraflexTM Sport MEvolution in anthracite and GTI Uni in greyto compliment the surrounding areas.

Taraflex™ has been used in every summerOlympics since 1976 and is available in 17colours and two wood-effect designs. The

Sport M Evolution product offers a P1category shock absorbency 25% to 35%and meets the EN 14904 Standard forindoor sports surfaces. Taraflex™ is alsorecognised for providing durability, safetyand comfort without impairingperformance. The range offers greaterthan 45% force reduction, making itunrivalled in the marketplace in terms ofoffering comfort for users.

The flooring contractor for the project, JedHill from Recreational Coatingscommented, ‘’I’ve worked with Gerflorflooring products many times and alwaysfind them very easy to use’’.

Taraflex™ meets the EN Standard of 22196for anti- bacterial activity (E. coli - S.aureus - MRSA) (3) returning >99% levelsof growth inhibition. The product is alsotreated with Protecsol®, which renderspolish redundant. Taraflex™ has a doubledensity foam backing and as anotherbonus, it’s environmentally friendly.

The communal and recreational areawhich splits the two gyms would need asolution which could cope with bothconstant footfall and look great. Gerflor’sGTI Uni was chosen by the client to makethis area both appealing on the eye andfunctional underfoot.

The smart Gerflor GTI range has a 2mmwearlayer and 6mm thickness overall andeasily copes with constant footfall, bearingthe heaviest static loads around the clock.It’s one of the toughest vinyl flooring tileranges on the market and is designed forboth industrial and retail areas.

GTI Uni is offered in seven clearly definedvibrant colours, enhancing Max Decor and PureDecor, to create clearly defined pathways andcorners, retail areas and safety zones asrequired. The backing is 4mm blackhomogenous sheet, while the surface is a 2mmcoloured homogenous sheet. GTI Uni has aWear Group standard T rating, meeting HSEanti-slip guidelines (R10) and is treated withGerflor’s unique scratch-resistant PUR+surface treatment, which provides easycleaning and improved resistance to scratching,significantly delaying the need for waxing. PUR+surface treatment also provides excellentresistance to chemicals allowing for easymaintenance. GTI Uni is also 100% recyclable.
