This is training with specialist coaching staff. This is encouraged but not compulsory as we recognise some students will like to try other sports. There are additional coaching sessions after school for Netball, Basketball, Rugby and Football teams, which are compulsory

for students who are representing the College.

Students who are not representing the College are encouraged to consider playing Sport for the College and may

opt for any sport. ***For Year 3-6 families - SCISSA SPORT Change This year will see a slight change in the format and structure of Primary School Sport. As you may be aware we have been involved in the regular weekly SCISSA competition (involving 9 Sunshine Coast Independent schools) each Thursday afternoon which has been very popular amongst students and staff and operating since 2003. Mid 2015 there was a movement by some Principals to radically change the format of SCISSA Sport for our Year 4-6 students. The new proposal was to do away with weekly sport fixtures and instead offer a single Gala day in each Term. This option was not agreed to by all schools but the majority won over the result and agreed to a new format. Unfortunately weekly sport fixtures against the other Independent Schools has now disappeared. St Andrew’s was disappointed with this outcome as we know the positive benefits, enjoyment and value the students received as a result of weekly SCISSA fixtures. This decision has however allowed the College to rethink its Sports provision and the change we see will be very positive. This year will see our Primary School Sport become a wonderful Co-curricular focus and St Andrew's has opted out of the proposed new format. The ability to have two year levels on a Sport ensure that our students have more contact with specialist sport coaches / teachers. 1 Our students and families are already very highly engaged in sport. The St Andrew’s Sport culture is an enviable

one and we have strong weekly fixtures in Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Tennis, Water Polo, Touch, Volleyball and Football. There are so many students engaged in these activities and we are delighted to be consolidating this approach to Sport and look forward to seeing St Andrew’s students engaging in weekly Sport.

2 We will continue to compete against many of the independent schools through our co-curricular involvement. 3 Students will continue to have a Sport afternoon with a wide choice of sports options and are encouraged to

train and try out many sports throughout 2016. The SCISSA model has previously restricted students to just two Sports per year. We are delighted that our students can now opt for four Sports per year and experience a range of new opportunities.

Primary Sport Booklet 2016 Page | 5

4 Coupled with this our Year 6 students are encouraged to play Sport each Wednesday afternoon in the Secondary Schools Sports competitions and many Year 6 students in 2015 played in the very successful Secondary Schools Football, Touch, Volleyball and Tennis competitions.

5 The proposed model of Gala days proved to be a more costly model for the College than the current model and due to our weekly co-curricular commitments, we are opting out of the Gala days in 2016. This has allowed us to achieve a number of benefits. Most notably, we have been able to redirect financial resources towards quality coaching. This year sees our Netball, Football, Basketball and Rugby coordinators appointed and they will taking on more coaching and have more involvement ensuring there is progressive skill development for our students.

6 The proposed model also saw curriculum time decrease as a result of the time spent travelling to many venues for various sports. Our Co-curricular focus allows more quality time in the classroom as well as the healthy balance of quality Sport competitions.

The benefits of increased time, increased choice, redirected financial resources and quality weekly sports competitions for our students will be achieved in 2016. Our involvement in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics remains unchanged. We are also looking to build more links and partnerships with strong sporting schools in Brisbane and will see some great fixtures against these schools. In Term 1 – all students in Year 3-6 can represent the College and play weekly fixtures in Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball and Tennis. We are also exploring offering new sports such as Hockey and OzTag as regular weekly competitive options for our students. Students in Year 6 are also eligible to play Volleyball for the College each Wednesday in Term 1 as well as Water Polo, Touch and Football later in the year. It is fantastic to see so many students playing Sport for the College and please feel assured that we will ensure that St Andrew’s Sport opportunities for students continue to be a priority and we look forward to seeing wonderful participation, wonderful enjoyment and pride in St Andrew’s Sport. I hope this clarifies any queries or concerns and please feel free to email me or phone if you wish to chat further. Thank you as always for your fantastic support of St Andrew’s Sport. Kind regards, Steve
