Welcome to the University of Exeter and the Athletic Union (AU). The Athletic Union is here to do everything we can to give you the best sporting experience as possible during your time here at Exeter. Whether you’re competing at the highest level or trying a sport for the first time, we cater for all abilities.

Exeter has a renowned sporting reputation, finishing 7th in last year’s BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) league. As an Athletic Union we have a real ambition to build on this success and consistently be a top ten finishing institution. We don’t just focus on BUCS performance however; we strive to provide something for everyone. Whether it’s trying out new sports, coaching through our Sports Volunteer Scheme, or playing for an Intramural team once a week with your friends, you’ll find it here.

This booklet is designed to be your sporting bible, with all the information you will need to contact the relevant club captains and see what Exeter sport has to offer. Over the page you’ll see a list of taster and trial sessions that will be happening during Fresher’s Week. This is the ideal time to get stuck in and try something new!

Being part of the Athletic Union is essential to ensure you get the most out of your time at Exeter. The diversity of activities, sports and opportunities to participate in are vast yet they all have the same goal: enjoyment through sport. I look forward to meeting you in the coming year.

Archery is a very accessible and diverse sport, with a strong emphasis on personal achievement and improvement whatever level your level of skill.

The UEAC is a friendly, relaxed club and we welcome new members with or without any prior experience of archery. We run a beginners course during the first six weeks of term which equips new members with the skills and safety knowledge to start shooting at club training sessions and we have a qualified level one coach who attends sessions and helps with developing technique and ability.

You can come along to shoot just for relaxation after a hard day at uni and to socialize after training or, if you are interested in shooting competitively, we encourage and support your development with coaching and squad training sessions leading to involvement in the local and national competitions which are held regularly throughout the year.

The Exeter Demons have quickly established themselves as a National play-off contender. With playing positions to suit all skill sets, American football really is a sport for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you have never played before, as our qualified coaching staff will have you padded up and making big plays in no time! We also pride ourselves on having a great social atmosphere, with members regularly meeting up off the football field for socials or to watch the NFL at Walkabout sports bar.

Exeter University Athletics Club is one of the University’s fastest growing clubs. We boast a wide range of athletes from cross country runners and those just trying to get fit all the way to international competitors. We regularly compete in indoor, outdoor and cross country competitions, and 2012 saw the team travel to the Olympic Stadium to race against other universities in the test event for the Olympic Games.

Though we may train hard, the club also has a great social atmosphere and it is this combination that gained us Most Improved Club in 2010 and a nomination for Club of the Year in 2012. So whether you are an experienced competitor or just looking to try something new EUAC definitely has something to offer.

EURL is a successful, welcoming, ambitious and rewarding club. Over the last few seasons the club has enjoyed success for both the 1st and 2nd XIII, with the first team now having gone two seasons unbeaten in Premier South. Last season also saw the club expand, fielding a 3rd XIII for the first time. We have strong links with Super League club Leeds Rhinos, who look to EURL to develop the sport in the South West. The Rhinos are involved with the club both on the pitch and off, helping to develop our club. EURL is for any player, of any ability, whether you want to try a new challenge, develop your skills or just play casually, EURL will welcome you.

The Snooker and Pool club is a great club to join if you are a national player or a complete beginner looking for a casual game.

We have two organised training sessions a week where you can play snooker, English 8-ball pool and American pool. Training is usually a casual affair, with members playing friendly frames against each other at the local Riley’s, giving members the chance to get to know each other on a personal and competitive level. Training is flexible; you can turn up as often as it suits you, with an internal snooker and 8-ball pool league run outside of training for more competitive practice. We also look forward to many socials held throughout the year, with the opportunity for everyone to play free pool and have a good time. In the second term we send 5 or 6 teams to the national BUCS Pool and Snooker Championships where we always have a good chance of winning a medal. The club is now growing a reputation for producing national talents, with 3 of our members playing for England as a result of their performance last year.

So if you’re looking to play an enjoyable, sociable sport, with or without a competitive edge, this is probably the club for you!
