Family Focus Programs
Early Childhood Development Family Focus offers services that help parents with children ages 0-5 enhance their ability to provide and advocate for their families. Education and support services for parents during the early years significantly contribute to positive, healthy, child-rearing practices, prevention of abuse and neglect,
and success in school. Programs offered strengthen parental knowledge and skills, and reduce isolation. Services offered include developmental screenings, prenatal and parenting support, child development education for parents, family planning education, crisis intervention, referrals to health care providers, referrals to community services and collaborating agencies, and support groups for grandparents raising grandchildren.
The mission of Family Focus is to promote the well-being of children from birth by supporting and strengthening families in
and with their communities.
Communities Served
• 17,000 community members • 1,121 Families through home visits • 1,500 students at 21 sites • 437 Illinois Department of Children & Family Services participants • Seven centers in Aurora, DuPage, Evanston, Englewood, Hermosa, Highland Park and Lawndale.
Family Focus participants confront many risk factors and environmental stressors, including poverty, unstable jobs and housing, domestic and community violence, and immigrant status. Family Focus’ centers are located where they can provide much needed support to families to give their children the best possible start in life. By increasing the family’s capacity to support growth of family members, we help families become resources to their own family members, to other families, and to the community.
Fatherhood The Power of Fathers Collaborative is open to new fathers, teen fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and fathers trying to reconnect with their families and helps fathers learn positive parenting skills and build relationships with their children in a safe, welcoming setting. This group provides comprehen-sive family support, including family night cook-outs and family field trips. The 12-week program covers topics such as: father’s rights, ex-offender rights, job referrals, child support information, male-female relationships, grandfathering, parental self-esteem, domestic violence, child develop-ment, and more. The Power of Fathers Collaborative is in partnership with Children’s Home & Aid, Metropolitan Family Services, and Fathers, Families and Healthy Communities.
Family Advocacy Centers Known as FACs, staff called Family Support Workers (FSWs) partner with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to provide parenting classes and one-on-one support from a staff member for parents who have been reported to DCFS for potential abuse/neglect. Less than 1% of participants referred to FACs by the Department of Children and Family Services are re-reported the following year as compared to the Illinois state average of 32%.
Home Visiting Home visitors meet with families in the environment where they spend most of their time. Home visitors establish a customized Individual Family Support Plan and track progress along developmental domains to ensure that children are meeting critical developmental milestones. Parent-child activities involve the parent and child in activities that foster gross motor, language, fine-motor, social, and emotional skills. Parent reflections and family support worker reports/observations help gauge parental knowledge of child development and attitudes regarding parent-child interactions.

Outcomes Family Focus enables parents to grow as their child’s teacher and advocate: • 100% of parents agreed that they have increased understanding of their child’s development.
• 84% of participants received full develop-ment screenings and 87% of children who were referred for further assessment received an early intervention service. • 90% of children who resided in the home of a parent at the start of services from Family Advocacy Centers remained with or were unified with their parents upon com-pletion of the program.
• 75% of fathers improve their active engagement skills in their child’s development and education.
• 70% of students who needed to improve their homework completion did so in the Family Focus after-school program. • 72% of fathers in the Power of Fathers program reported understanding how to decrease levels of stress related to their role as a parent.
• 57% of students who were failing in reading at the beginning of the year had a C or better by the end of the 4th quarter.
• 92% of parents agreed that they were more likely to be involved in their child’s education as a result of Family Focus. Beyond our success in preparing children for school, our program demonstrates its impact on the whole family to better sup-port the child’s healthy development:
• 100% of prenatal participants secure a doctor and attend at least 5-7 prenatal visits. 90% of participants have a primary care physician, compared to 15% at the time of enrollment. • 90% of children are up-to-date on immunizations.
Health and Nutrition Promoting a healthy lifestyle goes far beyond food an exercise, providing access to healthcare, and addressing barriers to preven-tative health education. A lack of nutrition contributes to inhibited growth and cognitive development and chronic diseases later in life, especially in low-income communities. Family
Focus collaborates with local healthcare institutions and communi-ty organizations to teach healthy habits to parents and their chil-dren, provide healthcare resources and referrals to healthcare.
School and Center-Based Youth Programs The time immediately following school hours is a time when a lack of a constructive activity or supervi-sion due to a parent’s working schedule can lead to risk-taking behavior. Children at all grade levels are brought into an educational and safe environment with activities such as homework help, games cen-tered around STEM lessons, literacy through creative writing, visual and preforming arts, character devel-
opment and socioemotional learning, life skills training, and more.
Trauma Support for Young Children and Families Early childhood trauma has been associated with reduced size of the brain cortex, responsible for complex functions including memory, attention, thinking and language. To help break the cycle of violence at the most critical stage in a child’s development Family Focus involves the entire family in the healing process. These interventions provide integrated therapy, case management
and family support services tailored to the needs of each individual family. Mental health services include therapy for both children and adults, child-parent psychotherapy (CPP), and family therapy. Families create an Individual Family Support Plan (IFSP) based on the family’s concerns, goals, preferences, and the therapist’s assessments. These plans may also include referral to other appropriate resources within and outside of Family Focus services.
Immigration and Citizenship Support Family Focus provides immigrant families and individuals with bilingual services to provide pathways to success and to keep families together. Services include assistance with citizen-ship processing, DACA renewal, interpretation services, ESL and GED classes, citizenship classes,
and referrals to healthcare, education and employment.
