The I.G.I. promotes knowledge and diffusion of Gemmology by organizing professional training for ECONOMIC OPERATORS, coaching HIGHLY QUALIFIED GEMMOLOGISTS and spreading a UNIFIED GEMMOLOGIC TERMINOLOGY.

The I.G.I. is studying gemmology directly in its own laboratory and indirectly by collaborating with Italian and foreign research institutions (e.g. National Research Centers and University Departments). In this framework, the I.G.I. organises meetings and seminars, it participates in meetings in Italy and abroad, and it gathers data, scientific articles and information from all over the world.

The I.G.I. confers the diploma in Gemmology only after the attainment of the diploma in Gemmological Analysis of coloured gems, the diploma of Expert in the Analysis and Classification of Diamond Qualitative Features and after the diploma of Pearls.

The Diploma of Gemmologist given by I.G.I. is the only one recognized for admission to examinations of F.E.E.G. (Federation for European Education in Gemmology). The Italian Gemological Institute is one of the Federation’s Founder Members.
