Over the years there have been many reasons why companies and individuals have supported the Festival and Bursary, some of which are listed below:

• in memory of a loved one• inspired by the brilliance of young musicians that feature at our Annual Concert• wanting to see their money being used to good effect• advertising their business in the local area• a genuine wish to support young people • wishing to support the work of the Choir

The FestivalThis year marks the 28th anniversary of the competition which sees young musicians come together to compete in the festival.

The objects of the Festival are:• to encourage young musicians in their musical ambitions.

• to help participants become familiar with performance, andgainconfidenceinfrontofaknowledgeable

audience and, perhaps, some transferrable life skills.

• to provide a platform for selected winners of the various classes to gain valuable performance experience playing to audiences at the Choir’s many concert events.

• to help the winners in the Festival to become members and potential leaders of both County and National Youth Orchestras, as many have from past Festivals.

SponsorshipThe Choir is most grateful to the many sponsors and donors who have supported the Festival of Young Musicians since its inception, and to those who have contributed to the Bursary Fund. The Choir now has pleasure in inviting similar support for 2020.

The Choir needs to raise in the region of £8000 pa to ensure the continuation of the Festival and the Bursary awards.

Full recognition of our sponsors will be given in the Choir’s Annual concert programme.

‘The fact that you donate so much to promising musical talent should really be applauded. I will always be grateful for the generous bursary you kindly awarded me while I was at school. Without that financial support I would not have been able to buy a suitable instrument, which, in turn would have meant me never having the opportunity to go to the Royal Academy of Music in London.’ Ashley Harper LRSM DipABRSM

Helen Duffy – AdjudicatorTheverydifficult taskofadjudicationofall themusicalclasses is undertaken by a single Adjudicator, Helen Duffy.

Helen, a distinguished International flautist and violinistworks as a concert musician and teaches worldwide, specialising in solo playing and chamber music. Helen has broadcast extensively and is an Examiner for the ABRSM.

Helen is delighted to be associated with what she believes to be the best Young Musicians Festival in the Country, and if the high standards achieved in the past are repeated then Helen faces a very difficulttaskindeterminingthewinners.Suchisthehighstandardofmusicinourarea – a tremendous accolade to schools, teachers and pupils.

Young Musicians BursaryEstablished in 2008 the Fund assists deserving local young musicians in advancing their musical education and ambitions by awarding Bursaries up to £1000.

Theveryfirstawardwentto11yearoldJoshuaHagleywhotookthefestivalbystormwith a virtuoso performance on the piano. He then went on to win the junior string class on a violin. The adjudicator said it was impossible for Joshua to progress any further with that violin. We were thus very pleased to present him with £1000 to buy a senior violin. Joshua studied music at Oxford University and now, as well as playing the piano, works as a composer, arranger and orchestrator.

In 2016 Chloe Rooke, a previous Bursary winner herself, approached us for help in financing a performance of Mendelssohn’s Oratorio, Elijah at All Saints Church. Chloe and previous Festival winners, Heather Cossins, Amy Gee and Hepzibah Hill put together the performance using just young musicians and choristers. Proceeds went to Wycombe Homeless Connection and the Chiltern Music Academy.

5 years ago the Wycombe Savoy Opera Company closed down and a sum of £3000 was donated to the Bursary to allow for an award of £500 per year for a vocal performer. The 2016 award went to Alice Martin from Wycombe High School who won a hotly contested vocal class in that year’s Festival. She was also chosen by her school to sing in front of, and offer a gift to, the Duke of Kent when he opened their new music centre which, incidentally, the Orpheus Bursary fund helped support in the past. Donations from the Choir’s own resources, Friends of the Orpheus and Sponsors are administered by the Choir’s Trustees. To date a total of over £26,000 has been awarded to 45 young musicians. The award is to be used to further the musical education of the chosen applicant(s). Applications must be made between 1st January and 1st April 2020.

The Choir was formed in 1923 with just 12 members, 97 years on there are now over 40 choristers from all walks of life. The main objective remains to deliver high-quality singing entertainment.

The Choir manages to project a warm and friendly atmosphere, whilst maintaining the highest musical standards and distinctive sound, and its concerts raise considerable sums of money for charities – well over £10,000 directly or indirectly in the last year.

Our Annual ConcertThe Orpheus arrange an exciting programme of musical entertainment for our annual concert at the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe. An eclectic programme to suit all tastes, includes arrangements of great pop classics from groups such as the Beatles, Queen, Coldplay and Elbow as well as powerful traditional “big sing” numbers. Winning Young Musicians from the Choir’s Festival add their talented performances, never ceasing to inspire with their sheer brilliance!

Continued for 2020The Orpheus has been left a legacy from the estate of Robin Bulbeck. The ‘Robin Awards’ will allow the Orpheus to further the musical aspirations of many more youngsters well into the future. Robin was so inspired by the performances of young musicians he witnessed at our Annual Concert, that he felt moved to make this very generous gift.
