Canada is host to the world! The International Young Breeders

Championships are coming to Alberta July 20-22, 2017!

This internationally acclaimed event, sponsored by the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH), is dedicated toward inspiring our breeders of the future to recognize and pursue excellence in sport horse breeding.

The year 2017, Canada’s 150th anniversary, will be the first time the competition has been held outside of Europe. Hosted by the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association (CWHBA) and to be held at the prestigious Spruce Meadows facility in Calgary, we invite you to be part of making this a special experience for the over 200 youth that will be guests in our country!

What is Young Breeders? The International Young Breeders (IYB) is a program sanctioned and supported by the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) that is dedicated toward bringing together youth participants from across the world.

The overall guiding objectives of the Young Breeders Program is to provide the young members (between the ages of 16-25) of breed organizations with a means to get involved and educate themselves on the breeding practices of the sport horse industry, and to connect with fellow owners and breeders, both on the national and international stages.

The program strives to provide the youth of each association with educational opportunities that are held in a fun environment and encourages participants to become active and engaged members of the equine community.

The CompetitionThe original idea for the program was developed in Germany and the first competition was hosted by the Hanoverian studbook and held in Verden, Germany in 2001. Each participating breed association, or studbook, is able to send two teams to compete in the international championships; one junior team (ages 16-19) and one senior team (ages 20-25).

Every participant is required to compete in four sections during the competition; ability to present Warmblood horses in hand, ability to evaluate equine conformation, ability to evaluate loose gaits and free jumping, and a written exam. Canada joined in the fun and sent our first teams to compete internationally in 2003, when Belgium hosted the competition in Minderhout.

Since then the championships have been hosted every second year in many different countries, including Denmark, Ireland, France, Sweden and Great Britain.

In 2017, the International Young Breeders World Championships will leave Europe for the first time and will be hosted at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta, Canada!

The Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association is the host stud book for the 2017 International Young Breeders Championships.

We are currently looking for support for the International Young Breeders program in order to help us create a world class competition for the close to 20 breed associations that are expected to attend the event. We are also looking to develop and educate the youth of our organization to provide them with their best chance at a strong showing for Canada during the 2017 championships.

We are eager to welcome all of the youth competitors to our wonderful country, and would like to organize a great competition experience for everyone in 2017!

With the Spruce Meadows world class show jumping facility as the venue and with your help, we can ensure that the occasion is memorable for every participant, and that Canada has a strong and well developed presence at this competition and many more in the future!

Here is What We Need & What We are OfferingHosting this event will cost close to $200,000 and many of the smaller stud books will be financially stretched to send teams all the way to Canada. To make this affordable for all we need significant financial help. Remember support for this program is an investment in our youth and the future of horse breeding.
