What is the National Native Title Conference?

The National Native Title Conference is recognised as the leading Indigenous policy conference in Australia. The co-convenors of the 2015 National Native Title Conference are the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the Cape York Land Council (CYLC).

Each year a different native title representative body or service provider co-convenes the Conference with AIATSIS, and each year the conference involves the traditional owners of the place in which it is held.

The 16th annual conference will be hosted this year by the Kuku Yalanji People the Traditional Owners of the Port Douglas region.

The conference will be held from Tuesday 16 June - Thursday 18 June in Port Douglas, Queensland.

The Conference promotes public debate about native title and Indigenous peoples’ interests in land and waters; fosters knowledge acquisition in this dynamic area of agreement making, natural resource management and economic development and provides an opportunity for native title parties to share information and experience broader policy intent.

  • About the Conference Co-Convenors

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER STUDIES (AIATSIS)

The mission of AIATSIS is the promotion of worldwide understanding of Australian Indigenous cultures, past and present.

AIATSIS is responsible for a multidisciplinary research program, manages world class collections of cultural and research material, houses the Aboriginal Studies Press and engages in numerous partnerships with research and government institutions and Indigenous communities.

AIATSIS was established in 1964 as an independent Commonwealth Government statutory authority, and has an independent governing Council chaired by Professor Michael Dodson. The functions of AIATSIS are set out in its enabling legislation, the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Act 1989 (Cth).

AIATSIS native title activities are supported through a funding agreement with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and is primarily conducted through the Native Title Research Unit (NTRU). The NTRU was established in 1993 in response to the High Court decision in Mabo v Queensland [No.2] (1992), which recognised Indigenous peoples’ rights to land under the legal concept of native title. The conference in 2013 marked the 20th anniversary of the Native Title Act.

The NTRU provides high quality independent research and policy advice in order to promote the recognition and protection of the native title of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and plays a key role in coordinating information, developing capacity and facilitating policy debate within the native title system.

    CAPE YORK LAND COUNCIL (CYLC)

In 1990, the communities of Cape York were galvanised as one voice to protect country, protect culture and stand together to ensure future generations were not impacted further by acts of government that threatened their native title rights. The Cape York Land Council’s vision centred around consultation and representation of the Aboriginal people of Cape York to regain rights to land and sea and preserve culture to make our own decisions to achieve a better future.

Today, with more than 25 years of solidarity and strength the Cape York Land Council has evolved as part of a network of Cape York Regional Organisations that fight for the Cape York Reform Agenda. This agenda centres around creating change in education and training, economic development, land and tenure reform, policy and leadership.

Cape York relishes the opportunity to showcase our work and share our experiences with Aboriginal people, and those working to create change in our communities across the nation. Our elders referred to the ‘call to arms 25 years ago’ as kicking the dust. In Cape York, we are still kicking the dust. But our agenda has changed and as we look towards the future, the ‘handover from our elders to the next generation, we look at how we can achieve a better future, through native title achievement.

The people of Cape York came together through the voice of our elders in 1990, and as we are still kicking the dust 25 years later, we welcome the opportunity to host the four corners of ATSI communities from across the country coming together for the Native Title Conference 2015.

  • The National Native Title Conference is promoted through various sectors including academic, legal, Indigenous, government, mining industry and natural resource management in several ways, including through:

    • advertising, media releases and articles,

    • promotion in NTRU and AIATSIS publications,

    • targeted print and electronic invitations and announcements,

    • online networks,

    • a conference website that provides up to date information to prospective

    • delegates, and

    • conference merchandise such as caps, t-shirts and bags.

Seeking financial supportTo support a productive exchange of community and organisational perspectives, AIATSIS strives to maximize conference participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Indigenous people from around the world, as speakers, facilitators, delegates and performers. It is towards this end that a significant proportion of the financial sponsorship will be directed. This may involve sponsoring Indigenous delegates’ travel accommodation and conference registration fees. Sponsorship funds are also used to subsidise the Conference registration fee to ensure that the Conference remains an economically accessible national native title forum.
