WelcometoGenova
GENOVA-ACROSSROADSOFCULTURESANDPEOPLE
Genova (from the Latin “Ianua”), isa portal between land and sea, acrossroads of cultures and peoplesinceancienttimes.
Located on the Gulf of Genova inthe Ligurian Sea, Genova is thecapital of the Italian region ofLiguria and has historically beenoneofthemostimportantportsonthe Mediterranean: it is currentlythe busiest in Italy and in theMediterraneanSea.
Genovahasbeennicknamed la Superba ("theproudone")due to its gloriouspast and impressivelandmarks. Part of the old townofGenovawas inscribed on theWorldHeritage List (UNESCO) in2006 as Genova: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli. The city's rich culturalhistoryinart,musicandcuisineallowedittobecomethe2004EuropeanCapitalofCulture.Itisthebirthplace of Christopher Columbus, Niccolò Paganini, GiuseppeMazzini and Renzo Piano amongothers.
Today Genova is a living city, where elegant shops, historic shops, lively open-air markets andrestaurants offer continual surprises to the most demanding tourist. Experiencing Genova is alsodiscoveringtheseveralsoulsthatcomposeit.
The nineteenth century neighborhood, the fishermen and vacation villages in the East and in theWest part, with houses and picturesque glimpses, and the ones in the hinterland, with theiruntouchedtraditions.

GENOVA-MUSEUMS,MONUMENTSANDSACREDPLACES
The museum offer in Genova is articulated andvaried:nexttothesystemofcivicmuseums(Museidel Comune di Genova) there are also two statemuseums - Museo di Palazzo Reale and GalleriaNazionale di Palazzo Spinola - and several privatestructures.
The network of Genoese civic museums is dividedintomore than twenty locations and includes: themuseums, the archives, the Documentation Centerforthehistoryofartandthe imageofGenova, thespecialist libraries and the Didactic Sector, whichorganizes activities and services for schools andfamilies.

Many factors contributed to the variety of Genoese architecture: the habit to build on existingstructures,recyclingrecoveredmaterialsfromolderbuildings,manytransformationsandextensionsofpreexistingbuildingsandchurchesintimesofrichnessandgrowthofthecity,urbanrevolutionstoimprovetheroadnetwork,thedestructionbroughtbybombingsandthefollowingreconstructions.Infactthecitywasbombedatleastinthreeoccasions:theattackfromtheseabytheFrenchfleetin1684, the one perpetrated by the Savoia against the independentists in 1849 and the one by theAlliesduringtheSecondWorldWar.

Thereisalonghistoryoftransformationsand high quality architectural andurbanistic interventions that is whyarchitecture lovers will satisfy theirdesires exploring the city. If youwant totravelthroughtheMiddleAgeswillsurelygo looking for signsand itineraries in theHistoric Centre. The Baroque style findsits expression in the churches of theHistoric Centre, but also in the splendidPalazzi dei Rolli. The ones who love theLiberty stylewill findelegant testimoniesin the straight roads and the tree-linedstreetsoftheFoce,whereevenRationalismleftitsspoor,especiallyinPiazzadellaVittoriaandinViadelleBrigatePartigiane.
The contemporary architecture lovers cannot miss the Porto Antico restored by GenoesecontemporaryarchitectRenzoPiano.

The Genoese spirit resides in thesealleys, wheredifferent smells, flavours, languages and cultures have alwaysbeen mixing together. The HistoricCentre, more of any other part of thecity, hasalwaysbeenameltingpot.
In these narrow spaces, between thehills and the sea, the pride of richmerchants and of noble Genoese wasexpressed by building splendidresidences, where many works of artwere collected and guarded forcenturies, and is still possible to seethem in some of these palaces, nowadays transformed in publicMuseums.

The architectural styles overlap in thesecompact ensemble of buildings, where thewindowsofthehousearesoclosethattheycan almost touch: themedievalwall is thebasisfora15thcenturybuilding,theGothicgalleries todayhavebeentransformed intotrendy clubs. In the Historic Centre ofGenova, the past is the foundation of thepresent.
Inthisplaceitseemsliketimehasstopped. You can find noble palaces and wonderfulchurches that alternate with shops thathavebeenopentothepublicformorethan100 years, where typical dishes are stillprepared following traditional recipes andartisanal objects are created according totraditions. Typical of Genova are the“botteghe storiche” (historic shops) andeven thenamesof thealleysoften recallapast strongly linked to artisanal activitiesand corporations, like Via degli Orefici orVico del Ferro. If you lift your eyes atcrossroads, you will enjoy the magnificentvotive niches donated by ancientcorporationstoilluminatethestreetsofthecityatnight.
The most ancient part of the city can bemostly visited on foot: it is nice to loseyourself in the alleys and stroll in livelyareas or choose an organized itinerary tovisit and get to know in detail churches, palaces and monuments, maybe evenfollowingafilrouge, suchastheGenovaofsongwriterFabrizioDeAndrèorthemedievalcity.

"Fragrant kitchens. Here are gigantic pies, chickpea flour, mixtures, sardines in oil, hard-boiledeggsencasedinpastrycrusts,spinachpiesand fried foods". The poet Paul Valery, in 1925,describedwiththesewordstheGenoesecuisine.Olive oil, vegetables and aromatic herbs are thebasis of the local cuisine, simple and balanced, whose most famous specialties are pesto andfocaccia.
In any restaurant or restaurant of Genoesecuisine you can also taste the stuffed vegetablepies, such as the torta pasqualina, and theGenoese polpettone. LISTOFTOPICS
Electrical energy generation and supply to users is on transition to distributed generation fromtraditional to renewable energy sources and development of Smart grids on “macro” “micro” and“nano”levels.VeryfastresearchanddevelopmentofsmartDCgridsishighlychallengingandpowerelectronics is the driving force of those new technologies. Power electronics in mechatronic andadaptronic systems, industrial robotics and wide range health care and biorobots with artificialintelligencearetopicsforfurtherresearch.
Theexplosivedevelopmentof electricmobility, current andexpected, will providenewchallengesand opportunities; on one side, the progressive removal of fossil fuels, both in transport andheating/cooling, will increase the usage of electric energy; on the other side, a vast number ofbatteries, both on wheels and in fast charging stations, may contribute to resolve the intrinsicunpredictabilityof renewables.Ultrafastvehiclechargingstations, inparticular, areexpectedtoberealizedwithsignificantstoragecapacity.
Also, increasingtheefficiencyofpowersuppliesreduceselectricalenergyconsumptionandmaybecounted as another way to reach that goal. Power electronics is also becoming crucial in electricpowersystem, asitincludesvarioustypesofenergystoragetechnologies.
Inresponsetoallthesechallenges, noveltopologies, controlstructuresandpowercomponentsarebeing introduced to improve performance of power electronics systems. Especially, new widebandgapmaterials(SiC&GaN)andtheincomingpowermodulesareaseriouschanceforabigstepforwardinabroadrangeofapplications.
A wide spectrum of topics will be addressed during the largest European conference in powerelectronics – EPE’19 ECCE Europe. Researchers, application engineers and experts from academiaandindustrywillmeettodiscussandexchangeideas.
