Mapping the Letters: Thursdays, August 2 and 9, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. This study will use traditional biblical studies along with a new mapping style to get the most out of the New Testament letters.

A very special thank you to Patti Gaedtke for teaching the little ones, to Margie Welke for organizing the crafts, and to my kitchen helpers: Kim Gibeault, Claudia Osero, Laurel Reinke, Deb Overhaug, Laurie Schmidt, and Sandi Catencamp. Thank you to Pastor Rebecca and Todd, and Nancy and Kirk Kind for providing housing for members of Crossways staff. Thank you also to our junior counselors: Justice Stadler, Dravin Schmit, and Abby Norman. We had thirty children hear the Word of God during Day Camp week. A WORD FROM ‘SOON TO BE’

PASTOR DARA

Dear Members of Grace,

Thanks be to God! I have received my first call as Associate Pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Madison, WI. Many thanks for all of the prayers and financial support you have given me throughout the years. I feel so privileged to finally have the opportunity to live out my call as a pastor.

As some of you may remember, I have been a member at Grace since I was in 4th grade. My family had just moved to Tomahawk and found a church home at Grace. I attended Sunday School classes, Confirma-tion, and was involved in the high school youth group here. I decided to attend Luther College in Decorah, IA to continue growing in my ed-ucation and in my faith. I was a camper at Crossways Camp for several summers and always wanted to be a camp counselor. I worked for two summers during college at Sugar Creek Bible Camp in Southern Wis-consin. It is at camp that I felt my call to ministry.

Although I felt my call to ministry when I was only nineteen years old, But the Holy Spirit had been putting the pieces together much sooner than that. I remember when I was little, playing communion with my dolls and stuffed animals. Some kids have tea parties, I gave my toys communion of grape juice and crackers. My family regularly attended worship services and were very active in our church, instilling in me the importance of faith as a part of our life. My parents taught me through their own examples to love your neighbor and to live a life of generosity. Being involved in Christian education from a young age inspired me to ask questions about who Jesus is and what God really wants from us. My experiences in seminary and on my internship helped me to affirm and accept my call to ordained ministry. I feel tru-ly blessed to know that throughout my faith journey there have been fellow brothers and sisters in Christ at Grace Lutheran Church in Tom-ahawk praying for me. Thank you for being a part of my faith journey and thank you for making Grace a wonderful church home!

I am pleased to announce that I will be ordained to Word and Sacra-ment Ministry on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 2:00pm at Grace Lu-theran Church in Tomahawk. I am so excited to be coming home to celebrate my ordination! I hope you will join me! Dara Schuller Hanson

Below is a letter that was received from Pastor Jack Mogale after his visit. TO MY FELLOW BROTHER MARK, SISTERS REBECCA AND SUZAN. Greetings to you and all Congregants in Grace and Calvary. The Good Lord Be with you all. It is indeed an honour to me to return to you in writing after our blessed stay with you. I take this time to thank you as pastors and host families for your dear hospitality and fellowship you offered to us. We thank you for all the Gifts of love you gave to all of us and may God continue to bless you. I include also your Church councils and other stakeholders involved in preparation for our trip to you. This trip will continue to stay in our hearts and minds and it will always remind us of our companionship because it was a huge experience for us. Our contribution to your faith and your contribution to our faith is realized and I think this is very important. Forgive us also where we went wrong because sometimes we may not notice that we did something wrong. I hope you will receive our shortcomings. I will write an invitation to you as soon as we have receive the number of people who are coming because I think Lekubu indicated in the meeting between Grace Church Council that they will not have a big problem regarding the number of guests at this stage. However, we will start to work on this in few days to come. Our journey went very well beside that Dr Molokoe and his wife were kept waiting for the next flight at Abu Dabi due to some errors on his wife’s ticket. But they seem to have arrived savely. Please pass our thanks to all who made this trip a success. Thank you very much and may God bless you. Your companion in the Lord, Pastor Jack Mogale

Initial Plans for 2013 Trip to Lekubu

• Dates – the winter recess. Dr. Molokoe will inform us. Sometime around the end of June and beginning of July.

• Requirements: ◊ A Letter of Invitation from each Parish stating how many that Parish can receive and for how long. ◊ An Application completed by each attending this trip, based on the ELCA Companion Handbook. ◊ Adding a Profile to this application that includes hobbies, skills, career, family, interests, and church

involvement. • First two days to be spent in Johannesburg with an orientation to ELCSA, accompaniment, culture,

South Africa. • Travel together to the Western Diocese Centre – from there groups will travel to their respective Circuits and

then to their companion congregation. • Costs:

◊ We will encourage ELCA congregations to pay at least a small portion of the expense so that, along with the application, those attending have a clear understanding that they are representing their con-gregation, Conference, Synod, and ELCA.

◊ Travelers pay for airfare and transportation costs to the Circuit. ◊ South African Parishes will provide food, lodging, and transportation while we are in their parish ◊ It is likely people may want to include a safari. This is entirely at their personal expense. One of the

visitors from Madikwe Circuit oversees the Madikwe Game Reserve and will assist with this. • Return – all will gather at the Western Diocese Centre for a review with Bishop Ditlhale. Faith Formation for the 21st Century • How can faith flourish in our homes and churches over the next ten years? • What are the hopeful signs and promising innovations that can guide the forming of faith for all generations? The first decade of the 21st Century has brought dramatic political, economic, social, cultural, and technological changes affecting every dimension of American religious life. After the new sanctuary was completed in 2005, it became Grace’s first priority to build faith in our children, youth, families, and homes. “Vibrant Faith,” the resource Grace has been using, is offering two events to help us develop a vision and model for forming faith, and to explore a variety of strategies for bringing the vision to life. One is a three-day event in the Twin Cities in August (see Pastor Ziemer’s report in the Council meeting minutes on p. 10 of this Good

News). Also, there is a one-day event at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plover on Saturday, September 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Governance and Ministry: Leading Your Congregation through Governance Change

Alban Institute, the premier continuing education and research center in the United States for faith communi-ties, will conduct a very helpful learning event relatively close to us geographically October 9-11 (see Pastor Ziemer’s report in the Council meeting minutes on p. 10 of this Good News). Governance and the format for ad-ministration are going through many changes in churches today, and Don Hotchkiss is one of the most informed and leading consultants in this area. Grace is at a point at which clarity and better structure will be extremely helpful and important for our well-being and how we function in the Tomahawk community. This event is offered only a couple of times a year and may not be offered in the Midwest again. It is especially timely as finalizing the new constitution will be on the agenda at this year’s annual meeting. It is also very rele-vant with this year’s “Leadership/Council Retreat” on the “missional church;” as Council seeks to implement a “Committee Night;” as it structures its meetings around “liaison reports;” and recently has been discussing me-dium-long range plans. The Church Council has discussed the importance of this event, and Personnel, Long Range Planning, and Con-stitution Committees have all been encouraged to prayerfully consider attending. Is this your calling? If govern-ance is a matter that interests or concerns you, please contact Pastor Mark at the church office, or someone on Council, Personnel, Long Range Planning, or the Constitution Committee. This event strongly urges “teams” to attend from a church, and offers a discount for teams. Find additional in-formation by clicking on http://www.alban.org/learningdetail-ind.aspx?id=9793 The Council is looking at ways to cover the registration, room, and food. Since Pastor Mark will be attending, transportation is already covered. This is your church! To do good ministry we need good governance! Help us find people with the interests and skills to guide us in governance!

August Special Offering The August special offering will go to Grace Commu-nity House. Tomahawk Area Interfaith Volunteers (TAIV), Salvation Army, Tomahawk Together, Friday night AA and other AA groups and organizations cur-rently using the Grace House. These organizations make a specific donation for the use of Grace house. Currently, our utilities have gone up making it more difficult to keep up with all expens-es. These groups are an important part of our commu-nity and offering them the use of Grace House is part of our mission statement: “To invite community out-reach and to be known as an inviting congregation”

From the Stewardship Committee

Giving to God

In the eighth and ninth chapters of 2 Corinthians, Paul is encouraging the people in Corinth to make an offering to the distressed Christians in Jerusa-lem. What is interesting about his encouragement is that he offers very little information about the plight of those Christians. In today’s fund-raising efforts, there would be a flood of reports about the actual conditions of poverty in Jerusalem. Providing this information regarding the trials and suffering would appeal to people’s compassion, obligation, and duty. However, Paul chose not to focus so much on the needs of fellow Christians; rather he focused his en-ergy almost entirely on what God had done. In writing to the people in Corinth, Paul is setting service to the poor within the context of service to God. Paul knew that money was needed for ser-vice—ministry in God’s name. He saw money as a tool that could be used for good all over the world. Money and what money can buy are necessary to help those in need. Paul asked the people in Corinth to give a gift willingly “not as an exaction” (2 Corin-thians 9:5). The people in Corinth responded by giving freely and generously in response to the grace God had freely bestowed upon them. Paul’s appeal to the Corinthian people was very pos-itive. He wrote, “For I know your readiness of which I boast about you…” (2 Corinthians 9:2). Paul was confident that God would give this willing attitude to the Corinthians. God has given us that same desire for our giving. We have done some wonderful acts of ministry, and we will continue do-ing them. As we continue tapping into God’s strength, good things will happen. Paul was seeking faithful gifts, not guilt-driven gifts. God is pleased with our gifts when they are given in love and faith. This day, and in the days to come, we are called to respond to the gracious love of Christ with hearts, minds, hands, and, yes, even check-books open to His leading.

Long Range Planning Committee A variety of interests, backgrounds, and ages are needed for this committee that meets once a month for nine months, from September through May. The particular foci for this coming nine months will be to establish short-term, medium, and long range plans for Grace, and for these plans to include the facilities, staffing, ministries, and yearly budget. Please contact Pastor Mark, John Kromm, or the church office if you are interested in this committee.

GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL Thursday, July 12, 2012, 6:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Heather Engel, Mindy Gabrich, Patti Gaedtke, Jean Huntoon, Judy Juedes, John Kromm, Brian Storm ALSO PRESENT: Pam Kopp, Treasurer; Pastor Mark Ziemer MEMBERS ABSENT: Sam Bourassa, Sheila Marquardt President John Kromm called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m., and, in Sheila’s absence, led a brief devotional period by sharing an article he had received from a member of the congregation about a little boy’s desire to see God. The little boy set out on his quest and soon encountered an old man with whom he shared his lunch (potato chips and root beer). After spending the afternoon together eating and smiling at each other (no verbal conversa-tion), both returned to their homes convinced they had seen God, the old man observing that God was much younger than he had thought. The message of the account is inescapable – the power of genuine kindness – “a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, the smallest act of caring…have the potential to turn a life around.” John closed with prayer. Discussion of where God’s presence has been particularly evident among the Grace congregation included Patti’s observation that she saw God in the children at Day Camp. Unintentionally related to John’s devotions, she told of seeing Keagan Brown, one of the younger Day Campers, hold a door open for two older women (on his own without being asked to do so), obviously earning smiles from the women, after which Patti told Keagan and the other children that she “just saw Jesus” in him through his act of kindness. Patti took advantage of the teaching moment to discuss acts of kindness and the smiles that follow. Patti said that after that lesson, when the children would say or do something caring they would ask her, “Do you see Jesus?” Patti added her feeling of being blessed to work with the children and the teaching team. Mentioned also as moments when members experienced awareness of God’s presence were during the concert music by the African guests and Rev. Jack Mogale’s sermon at the Saturday evening, July 7, worship service. [Brought to the attention of council following the meeting but surely meriting inclusion as certain evidence of God’s presence and action among the Grace congregation is the truly immense amount of planning and hours of preparation, organization, publicity, and countless details that were volunteered with enormous selflessness and good will by many from the Grace congregation. At the helm of this huge project, of course, was Pastor Mark, who has been involved in this goal for literally years. Many others contributed “above and beyond” again and again throughout the visit. Deserving special mention as leaders, however, were Karen Torkelson, Margie Welke, and Sherry Clements. Also, recognition and gratitude go out to the host families for their hospitality and generos-ity. This was a massive undertaking, the success of which is sure and certain evidence of the presence of God among us.] It was moved and seconded by Patti Gaedtke/Brian Storm to approve the minutes of the June 14, 2012 council meeting. Motion carried. Beginning the Treasurer’s Report, Pam Kopp noted that the credit card credit balance was resolved this month. Additional charges (including the Fellowship Hall chairs) and a refund check took care of it. Pam called attention to an unexpected bill in the amount of $445 received from Mechanical, Inc. for diagnosis of the boiler problems. She also reported a bill for the elevator maintenance contract that was just recently received in the amount of $1,652.88. This bill is usually paid in February; however, the company had the wrong address and finally sent it by certified mail. Pam checked to make sure the church would not be charged a penalty, and paid it last week. She reported that there is only $12,000 currently in the General Fund, and said that it is a good thing there are five Sundays in July. However, she noted that it may be necessary to pay a mortgage payment or two out of the Debt Retirement Fund, which currently has almost $23,000 in it. After asking for council approval to do this, it was moved and seconded by Jean Huntoon/Patti Gaedtke to approve using money from the Debt Retirement Fund as necessary to make the mortgage payments. Motion carried. Pam concluded her report by recommend-ing that at the six-month break all committees should review their budgets, noting that some are already over

budget. It was moved and seconded by Heather Engel/Judy Juedes to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Motion carried. Under Mission Reports, Patti Gaedtke reported from Day Camp that there are 30 students enrolled this year (there were 24 last year), with ten of the children in the 4/5-year-old age group. It was observed that perhaps moving the schedule a month earlier this year may have affected the enrollment positively; also, Day Camp was publicized at a heavily attended Outdoor Worship. It was noted that four families represented among the stu-dents are not members of the Grace congregation. Although absent from this meeting, Sheila had forwarded that she will meet with the Evangelism Committee next week to address a number of issues regarding committee membership and activity, and will share the information with council. Reporting from Fellowship (Groups), Heather said that three persons will drive for the Wilderness trip. She also reported that her daughter, Autumn, is currently attending Lifest at the Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh, and is reportedly “ecstatic” over the program. She is especially happy with the atmosphere of welcome and ac-ceptance, and encourages other youth to go. Council expressed appreciation for the two persons from Grace, Erin Story and Craig Gauerke, who are attending Lifest as chaperones. They are also working closely with the group from Merrill. Heather also announced that the NYG group has achieved its financial goal and will leave on Monday, July 16th (returning on the 23rd). She said that a contributor challenged his organization to each contribute four dollars, which successfully put the project at its goal. The group will be aired on WJJQ each day of their trip at approxi-mately 7:40-7:50 a.m. Pastor Mark suggested perhaps coordinating the radio broadcast with one from the Wil-derness Trip’s arrival in Montana. Pastor Mark pointed out the importance of youth participation in one of the three activities during the summer – Wilderness Trip, Lifest, or NYG – as a major faith adventure. Also under Missions, Judy shared the letter outlining the offer to Jane Lange to use space at Grace House for her personal craft project in return for housekeeping duties and $100 (deposit to cover one year) for utilities. The church office will receive a copy of this contract letter. From Administrative Committees, John reported that Long Range Planning did not meet. This committee and the Stewardship Committee are in need of new members. John mentioned that a goal of the Long Range Plan-ning Committee is to brainstorm with a member or members of each committee of the church to discover and or-ganize both short-term and long-term needs and plans. It is hoped that, in the fall when the “one-night meeting” format is initiated, such interaction among the Education, Fellowship, Worship, Service, Evangelism, and Admin-istrative areas, including all the committees that exist under these headings, will help to improve communication, productivity, and promote the importance of relationships. The first “meeting night” will be Thursday, September 6. Brian reported that Building and Grounds has received three estimates for the replacement or repair of the boiler system. Estimates range from $16,000 to $38,000. Affecting the total cost could be potential rebates as well as considerable improvement in the large amount of waste that is occurring now. With the approach of the heating season, decisions on replacement/repair and which firm to hire must be made by August. Discussion followed concerning funding. Among other methods of congregational information/involvement/participation was the possibility of repeating the “Cottage Meeting” format. Also discussed was the necessary repair of the facilities in the lower level women’s restroom. Because Pastor Rebecca needed to be absent from the meeting, she had shared her written report to council, which included recognition of the successful preparations for the NYG trip, her Continuing Education time at Christikon, some vacation while she is in that part of the country, her recognition of the successful visit by the South Africans, and her return August 3rd to prepare for the beginning of the Confirmation program. She shared articles from this months Parish Paper and from the Alban Institute that she felt would be interesting and in-formative for council members. Pastor Mark began his report by briefly discussing the activities of Craig Gauerke, Grace’s summer intern,

calling special attention to the classes Craig is leading. Highlighted was the reading, and Craig’s discussion, of Doug Fields’ book suggested for youth. Pastor pointed out emphasis on the position of Youth Facilitator rather than “Youth Director,” which, in essence, is the difference between small groups and large groups. Small groups (led by a facilitator) promote relationships, whereas a director is more concerned with an over-all program di-rected toward a large-group entity. Both John and Heather confirmed this approach from personal experience. Pastor also noted the success of the (Root)beer (Sparkling)wine Friday night campfires. He mentioned the posi-tive aspect of participation by various age groups. Pastor then presented a detailed discussion of the South African visit, including the recent Global Village Camp and – always – the overriding significance of relationships. He discussed developments emerging from the recent visit, pointing out the vital role Grace is playing within the Synod; potential plans for the immediate and longer range future; and the interest in, and opening up to the community of, possible educational exchange. He dis-cussed the meeting council and others had with Pastor Jack Mogale and Jake Matladi on Monday, July 9, specifi-cally mentioning an “adopt a prayer partner” program that could be developed. Pastor highlighted two upcoming educational events: 1) Mindy Gabrich, Patti and Mark Gaedtke, and Pastor Ziemer plan to attend The Vision & Practice of 21st Century Faith Formation August 14-16, in Bloomington, MN. Leading this event will be John Roberto, author of Faith Formation 2020, project coordinator for Vibrant Faith Ministries, Director of Lifelong Faith Associates, editor of the journal, Lifelong Faith, and coordinator for the Faith Formation 2020 Initiative; and 2) Governance and Ministry: Leading Your Congregation Through Gov-ernance Change, October 9-11, 2012, Techny, IL, led by Dan Hotchkiss, author of Governance and Ministry, con-sultant with the Alban Institute, and currently focusing his writing, teaching and consulting in the areas of con-gregational governance, board development, planning, and financial health. Pastor Mark is enthusiastic about this event and urges Grace leadership attendance, saying that this can be especially helpful for lay-clergy leader-ship teams to attend together. Pastor will accompany the Wilderness Trip July 21-28, and be on vacation August 24-31. Under Old Business, John read the June 25th Lekubu arrival greeting from the Lekubu Parish Partnership Com-mittee, which highlighted the importance of the relationship between Lekubu and Grace. Under New Business, Pam announced that Sarah Mann (part-time church office Secretary Support) will serve as Grace Treasurer. The procedure for hiring Sarah to this position will be determined by the Personnel Committee. Pam pointed out the expediency of filling this staff position in-house, if possible. She will work with Sarah as long as necessary to familiarize her with the responsibilities of the position. It was moved and seconded by Patti Gaedtke/Mindy Gabrich to approve hiring Sarah Mann as Treasurer of Grace Lutheran Church. Motion carried unanimously. John expressed his opinion that Grace’s radio ads could be improved by being more personal. Discussion fol-lowed that included improvement of newspaper coverage as well. It was determined that this would be a respon-sibility of the Evangelism Committee, and it will be discussed with Karen Torkelson of that committee. It was moved and seconded by Mindy Gabrich/Judy Juedes to name Autumn Frederick one of the youth repre-sentatives to council. Motion carried. Discussion followed concerning specific procedures for the succession of high school youths’ service on council. The next meeting of the Grace Lutheran Church Council will be on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. It was moved and seconded by Patti Gaedtke/Brian Storm to adjourn. Motion carried, and the meeting closed at 8:00 p.m. with the Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Jean Huntoon, Secretary
