Comparison of Final Semester

Nursing Students’

Knowledge, Attitudes, and

Interest

The purpose of this study will be to examine graduating ADN students’

knowledge of geriatric concepts, attitudes toward older adults, and desire to work in geriatric nursing.

Research Questions include: 1. What knowledge do final semester ADN

students have of geriatric concepts?2. What attitudes do final semester

ADN students have about older adults?

3. How likely are final semester ADN students to verbalize a desire to work

in geriatric nursing?4. Is there a relationship between

knowledge of geriatric concepts and desire to work in geriatric nursing

among final semester ADN students?5. Is there a relationship between attitudes toward older adults and desire to work in geriatric nursing

among final semester ADN students?6. Is there a relationship between

knowledge of geriatric concepts and attitudes toward older adults among

final semester ADN students?

This study will use a cross-sectional, convenience sample of 30 to 60 final

semester ADN students. Only students in the last semester of their nursing

programs will be used. All other students including students in an LPN-to-RN bridge program will be excluded from the study. All participants must be 18 years of age or

older. Participants will be asked to complete (on SurveyMonkey): Geriatric

knowledge tool, Attitude tool (measures attitudes toward older adults and toward geriatric nursing), & Demographic page (basic characteristics such as age, race,

gender, and experiences with older adults). Data will be collected through an

online survey tool (SurveyMonkey). Students will be invited to participate

verbally (at the beginning or end of class) and through a letter of invitation posted on Canvas. Participants will complete the

College Retention and Completion

Rates Among Low-Income Women in Mississippi

The objective of this study is to assess the needs, challenges and

experiences of low-income female community college students in

Mississippi, the existing services and supports available to them,

and areas where additional resources might improve their

college persistence and completion. Results will help

community and college leaders identify promising strategies for

increasing college completion among this at-risk group of

students.

The survey--created through Survey Monkey--will be completed online, at the convenience of participants. The

survey responses will be the only data source used for this study. The will be

compiled by the Survey Monkey software and analyzed using SPSS. Each respondent will only fill out the survey once. The questionnaire will take 20-25

minutes to complete, and we do not anticipate that students will use class

time to complete the survey. Interviews with college staff and administrators will be conducted over the phone during the

fall months.

Collins, Buddy The effect of the July 1, 2012

Federal student aid changes on

the annual student debt of

community college students

in Mississippi.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the extensive changes in student aid, particularly the Pell Grant, which were implemented on July 1, 2012, on student loan debt in Mississippi’s 15 publicly-supported community colleges. The following research questions will be answered in order to satisfy the purpose of this study: 1) Did the July 1, 2012 changes in the federal aid program affect the annual loan debt of Mississippi community and junior college students? 2) Was the annual debt of a particular region affected significantly more than the other regions? 3) Was on gender affected more than the other? 4) Was the annual debt of a particular ethnic group affected significantly more than the others following the changes? 5) Did the changes affect the total number of loans incurred by Mississippi Community and Junior College students?

The participants in this study will be comprised of two groups of first time-

full time freshmen from each institution who participated in the federal direct

student loan program. Group 1 will be all first time-full time freshmen entering

the community colleges for the 2011-2012 school year. Group 2 will be all

first time-full time students entering the community college’s for the 2012-2013 school year. To control internal validity,

only students completing both semesters will be included in the study.

Data will be gathered from each community college. The information will

be gathered electronically identifying institution, gender, ethnicity, EFC and

loan amount. No identifiable information will be requested. A quasi experimental design will be used since

there will be no random assignment and secondary data will be gathered. A

factorial ANOVA will be used to determine differences in both main and

interaction effects.

How County Supervisor

Perceptions and Education Level

Affect Local Community

College Funding

Three research hypotheses have been developed for this study.

1. There is a positive correlation between the level of financial

assistance supported by a member of the

county board of supervisors and his/her perceptions about the

effectiveness of the community college in the areas of: a)

community college courses, programs and workforce training

provided by the college; b) job attainment by individuals who

attend the local community college; and c) the local

community college being a good steward of the financial support

provided by a county.2. There is a positive correlation between the level of education obtained by a member of the

county board of supervisors and the level of financiol assistance

supported by that member of the county board of supervisors for

the local community college.

Random sampling will be utilized to select the supervisors who will be

asked to participate in the study. A total number of 50 potential

participants will be randomly selected. Once randomized, supervisors will be re-assigned place holders according to the randomization results, thus further ensuring confidentiality and anonymity

of those supervisors who have been chosen to participate in the study.

Surveys will be mailed to those supervisors who have been randomly selected. Physical mailing addresses

for participants will be obtained from the Mississippi Supervisors'

Association. The survey, along with directions, necessary IRB and consent

forms, and information outlininghow survey responses will be utilized and published will be mailed to each

participant. A self-addressed, stamped return envelope will be provided in which to return the survey once it is

completed. Each participant will have two weeks from the postmarked date

to complete the survey and return it to

Best Practices and the

Relationship Between

Integration, Student

Involvement, and Rates of Graduation

The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics or best

practices related to the successful completion of developmental

education that faculty, administrators, and other

educators believe are important. Furthermore, this study will

compare the rates of graduation for developmental students

(defined as those who successfully complete developmental courses)

to non-developmental students (students who did not enroll in developmental courses) that graduated between 2007 and 2012. The final purpose is to

explore the relationship between integration and student

involvement by surveying currently enrolled students.

The study will utilize both qualitative and quantitative data. The researcher will work with college administrators

to administer a 38-item questionnaire to students in one Spring 2014 and/or Summer 2014 developmental English section and one English 1 section at

the following colleges: Copiah-Lincoln, East Central, Hinds, MGCCC,

Northeast, and PRCC. Additionally, interviews will be conducted with

Developmental English faculty volunteers and administrators at these

six colleges. Graduation statistics on developmental al non-development students from all fifteen colleges will be collected from the Research and Effectiveness Division of the MCCB.

The aim of this project is to use an online questionnaire to determine whether undergraduate Millennial

students living in different geographic regions of the United States, our future generation of

electronic portfolios with candidate photographs.

Understanding that e-portfolios often embed a candidate picture,

the researcher aims to better understand the relationship

between the race and ethnicity of a candidate and the attitudes

participants possess when evaluating racially diverse

candidates.

The researcher created a career e-portfolio for a fictitious female

candidate applying for a Resident Assistant position, manipulated the candidate photographs within the e-

portfolio so that there were five independent conditions (e.g. White,

Black, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, & Control- No Photograph), and will

collect candidate evaluation scores from participants following their

review of the e-portfolio. The data collected from Millennial

undergraduates between the ages of 18-33 years will provide valuable information about undergraduate

hiring based decisions. The quantitative data obtained from the

project will aid in our understanding of three research objectives: (1)how

Millennial undergraduate students rate a fictitious career electronic

portfolio of the same race or ethnicity; (2) the extent to which student

This research will answer four research questions: 1) To what extent is the adoption of new technology a goal for faculty? 2) Are domain specific measures of hope, self-efficacy, and goal orientation distinct and reliable in regards to faculty adoption and use of a new LMS? 3) What is the relationship among hope, self-efficacy, and goal orientation as a motivational belief system among faculty? 4) What is the relationship between hope, self-efficacy, and goal orientation as a motivational belief system and the adoption of an LMS?

The sample will consist of faculty from the Mississippi community college system who completed

training for the new learning management system, Canvas, and are currently using the system in

their courses.
