When Danceworks’ Artistic Director, Dani Kuepper came to me with the idea of founding Artistic Director, Sarah Wilbur returning to Danceworks to set a piece on 25 women, I thought, “Perfect! Danceworks is turning 25!” There ended up being 21 rather than 25 women in Sarah’s piece, but Danceworks Performance Company just celebrated its 21st birthday this past year—so that’s perfect, too. Things always have a way of working out around here.

So, Sarah and Dani are together again. There is a picture I have kept of the two of them in my mind. I’ll try to describe why it captured my imagination and has held my attention all these years.

It shows two people working together, supporting each other, sharing weight, creating, connecting—dancing together. They happen to be women but they could be anyone, of any gender, in any line of work. To me, this picture represents the perfect working relationship—professionally and personally.

There’s a glow about the two of them. You have a sense that they are filled with contentment and joy, and are in sync. You’re not really sure where one begins and the other ends, and yet at the same time, you know for certain that they are two independent individuals. They are in good alignment. There is total trust.

Dance teaches us about trust, support, and alignment, but most importantly, dance gives us the opportunity daily to put it into practice. When we skip a beat, miss our mark, knock into someone, trip up or fall down, we get back up; we dust ourselves off and keep dancing, all the wiser for our mistakes. To dance is to speak, to sing, to soar—together.

There are many women like this in my life, including Sarah and Dani. For 19 years, we have been in a dance together—moving toward and away from each other, and back again as life leads us. Dance can mean many things. The goal is to dance boldly, with trust and support.

I’m so glad you are able to share in our dance as an organization—on tonight’s stage, in our studio and throughout our community. Thank you for the dance you are creating in your own life and for joining together with us.

Thank you for supporting Danceworks as our dance continues on, and on.Deborah Farris | Executive Director, Danceworks

FroM DAnCEworkS’ ArTISTIC DIrECTor

I am overflowing with joy to have my dear friend, Sarah Wilbur, Danceworks Performance Company’s founding artistic director (1997-2007) in town, for Women Who Dance! In fact, her work on the concert, Disclosure Tactics (2012), propelled the vision for an event that is intended to embrace women who dance for a variety of reasons. Some dance for joy and unity, others for exercise or balance, some to revel in virtuosity and others dance to express that which cannot be spoken.

While Disclosure Tactics is largely a solo work, it is no surprise to me that Sarah chose to engage a group of 19 women—both professional dancers and community dancers—in realizing her choreography. Sarah has always been a generous artist, naturally advocating for and empowering others in her work. Disclosure Tactics is a great illustration of Sarah’s innate generosity and interest in engaging others in dance.

Taking a nod from Sarah’s work, I set out to devise a concert that would celebrate a variety of Women Who Dance. Danceworks Performance Company has long been a collective of predominantly female voices. our work on the concert tonight, Pattern, Repattern, Unpattern, Repeat; illustrates the ways in which DPC collaborates and communicates as a group of women with a hive mind, developed and deepened over time. Panadanza, founded in 2008 by director, Karlies Kelly, empowers and unites women of all dancing abilities in dances from the Caribbean, Central and South America. Cadance Collective (performing Friday) consists of flautist, Emma Koi; cellist, Alicia Storin & DPC’s Christal Wagner. The three artists intersect music composition and choreography as absolutely inter-dependent in process and product. And Earthstrong Women’s Collective, a female percussion ensemble (performing Saturday), will engage the audience with an invitation to clap and sing along.

This invitation to participate is extended to our Saturday audience in a pre-show Maker Fair, featuring a variety of female artists and makers in the lobby. Guests include Alice’s Garden, Gujja Ting African Art, Milwaukee Dance Theatre Network, Mother Maker, and visual artists Annelise Pollard, Jolie Collins and Judy Zoelzer Levine. And lastly – our Sunday audience is welcomed to join us for a pre-show Brazilian Samba lesson with Karlies Kelley!

It has been a pleasure to draw this collection of outstanding women together in an effort to make us all more aware of the artistic diversity, creative rigor and engagement that is happening all around us. It is my hope that through this heightened collective awareness, we can make an even greater impact on the Milwaukee community that we all serve and love!

Thank you for supporting DPC and the many exciting artists of Women Who Dance!Dani Kuepper | Artistic Director
