the SYMPOSIUM, an overview

The NYC Gifted & Talented Symposium 2013: Supporting the Strengths & Talents of NYC Youth presented by Parents of Accelerated Learners [PALNYC],

to provide an opportunity for parents to understand key issues in gifted & talented education; discover local schools and extracurricular programs that support advanced learners; explore quality online and local resources relevant to their child’s abilities and interest areas; network with parents of like-minded kids and find mentorships that support their unique learners; thought leaders: provide an opportunity for an open dialogue among NYC-based thought leaders in G&T education; STEM and NYC opportunities for private and public partnerships in education.

provides parents with an understanding of the key issues in differentiated and gifted and talented education while discovering local schools,  extracurricular programming and other resources that support high potential youth within New York City and beyond.

The one-day symposium is co-sponsored by PALNYC and The Center for Mathematical Talent, Courant Institute at New York University and organized by an advisory committee comprised

of every major G&T

organization in New York City

including reps from Hollingworth,

Speyer Legacy School, Hunter,

The Lang School,

PACE,

Anderson, NEST+M, BSI, STEM PS85,  citywide and districtwide principals, psychologists who specialize in gifted education, and if they will agree to it, DOE reps.  Additionally, numerous supporting organizations include NAGC, AGATE, PACE, NJAGC, RIISE Diversity Recruitment, Common Sense Media and more. Our partners, media sponsor New York Family and local parenting groups will help us cast a wide net for this event. A Curated Exhibit Hall will include a sampling of NYC's #nest educational programs, from the more academically focused programs such as The Center for Mathematical Talent’s Math Circles, to the highly specialized or online programs for advanced students.  We’ll introduce PALNYC’s APP Showcase, a discovery platform for educational web and app-based learning tools for kids to use at home, or students to use in school or on the go.The term 'gifted' and even 'gifted and talented' seems to suggest that some children have a uniquely special feature while others don't. At PALNYC, our philosophy maintains that all kids have speci#c strength areas and talent abilities.

Often it's engaged parents who notice these abilities early, and sometimes it's family members or a child's teacher.PALNYC provides what NYC is missing, an affordable 'one-stop shop' that enables parents to support their child's unique area of ability, no matter if it's musical, sport related, math, chess or simply a deep love of animals. So this Symposium - and PALNYC's mission- is to provide parents with opportunities to better support their children through: educational workshops that explore the cognitive, social and emotional needs of their child; a school that #ts their child's individual needs; an afterschool program that taps that child's passion; a mentorship with a professional who can take their child's interest to the next level, or simply like-minded parents and peers who provide a safe and engaging environment for children to become passionate lifelong learners. In the end, it's all about quality education for all children, and that is at the core of this symposium.

Join us as we collaborate, differentiate, advocate, innovate and educate on October 26, 2013.
