SCHEUERLE SPMTs (self-propelled modular transpor-ters) carry giant equipment all over the world.SCHEUERLE module transporters are based on theexperience gained from the development and pro-duction of more than 5500 axle lines. With our tech-nology, loads in excess of 15,000 tons, such as fac-

tory modules for power stations, seawater desalina-tion plants and oil exploration equipment as well asoffshore platforms, are transported safely and reli-ably to their final destinations. The SPMT axle linesof the 1st generation delivered in 1984 are still inuse every day.

World record15,000 tons bound for the sea. For the roughly 200 metre long transport of an oil separator system for wastewater treatment, module transporters (SPMTs) were electronically coupled to one another and positioned underthe 85.3 metre wide and 67.5 metre long load, using only one remote control. This involved a total of 540 SPMTaxle lines with 2,160 wheels from the TII Group.

The plant is moved from the production hall.

“SCHEUERLE Control Technology”The use of Scheuerle module transporters in connection with the control technology developed by SCHEUERLEallows precise positioning of extremely heavy loads. The individual module transporters can be randomly cou-pled, mechanically coupled or arranged in loose coupling mode in an areal of 600m x 600m. The SCHEUERLEcontrol technology ensures synchronous control of all transporter units integrated in the fix coupling mode. Theelectronic multi-mode steering developed by SCHEUERLE provides the module transporters with maximum fle-xibility and manoeuvrability.

SCHEUERLE Control Technology

In the future, the SCHEUERLE SPMTs are also availablein the proven 3rd or even 4th generation, according torequirement. Both the 3rd and the 4th generation ofself-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) are equip-ped with the approved SCHEUERLE control technology.These two generations cover all further developmentsin the vehicle sector and ensure compatibility with theprevious generations of module transporters.

With this, SCHEUERLE offers a reliable control techno-logy for the special requirements in heavy load trans-port, synchronising all functions between the individualvehicle units. In fix coupling mode, a transport unit is

defined as “Master Unit”. All other transport units –regardless of how many are in the fix coupling mode –receive their corresponding control commands for stee-ring system, drive system, brake, etc. from this Master.

Connection elements (spacers) are used for mechani-cal side-by-side coupling of transport units.

All transport units are positioned freely and connec-ted to the Master Unit (MU) only by a data line. Thetransport units can be set up in an area of 600m x600m.

SPMT G3 & G4

The 4th generation of SCHEUERLE SPMTs has beenoptimized in terms of product engineering and deli-very times by applying the latest welding robot tech-nology. Both the platform and the entire wheel bogieare manufactured with highest precision by robots

especially developed for SCHEUERLE. In contrast tothe existing 3rd SPMT generation with an axle loadof 40 tons, the new 4th generation from SCHEUERLEfeatures an axle load of 48 tons, using foamed tyres(Polyfill) or super elastic (solid) tyres.

The mechanical coupling of twoSPMTs is performed via a hydrau-lically lockable lamellar coupling.

To adapt to the slope angle whendriving on ramps, etc., the Power-PackUnit (Z350) is also equippedwith hydraulic regulating cylinders.

Through the selectable number of hydrostatically driven pendulum axles, the tractive force of a SPMT can beadapted to your requirements. Thus, you are always operating economically.

The Power Pack Unit (PPU) Z 350DA – Standard is a drive aggregate for SPMT/Module Transporters and is designed for connection to the platform trailer units. The frame structure is a welded steel construction consisting of rectangular tubes. The diesel engine with flange-connected hydraulic pumps for drive propulsion, steering, lifting hydraulics and brake system, the cooler combination for water and charge air cooling of the diesel engine, the oil cooler for the hydraulic system, the hydraulic oil and diesel fuel tank, the terminal boxes for electronic and electrical control, the batteries, filters, control valves as well as the muffler system with spark arrestor, are safely arranged within the frame structure. Except for the coupling side, the power pack unit is completely covered with steel plate respect. non-skid aluminium checker plate on top and partially noise-insulated. The muffler end pipe is detachable.

The diesel engine is a water-cooled 8-cylinder V-type engine with turbo charger and intercooler system, with an electronic motor management for optimal consumption and emission values as well as comprehensive maintenance information. The exhaust emissions, valid for the EC (European Community), are in accordance to the EC-directive 97/68/EC, amended by 2004/26/EC, step IIIA (EUROMOT IIIA), respectively valid for the USA in accordance to the EPA-directives 40 CFR, part 89, tier 3 (EPA 3). Hydro motors each will drive the fans of the two coolers. An elastic coupling mounted to the flywheel of the diesel engine protects the pumps from destructive torsion vibrations. The diesel engine including its attached components will be arranged vibration-proof. The hydraulic oil tank, with integrated return line filters and shut-off valves for the suction lines of the different hydraulic circuits, is made of stainless steel.

The hydraulic pumps for the drive system are two in-line assembled axial piston pumps with variable displacement acting in a so-called “closed circuit” along with the axial piston motors with variable displacement of the drive axles in the platform trailers. The electric/hydraulic displacement of the pumps is in dependency to the revolutions of the diesel engine, thereby adapting the driving speed to the engine performance and the respective drive resistance. An axial piston pump with variable displacement and pressure control supplies the oil flow for the lifting, steering and brake system in a so-called „open circuit“ and will be displaced by the adjusting signal in several pressure steps of the solenoid pressure relief valves for adjusting the system pressure to the respective load pressure. A proportional pressure control valve for the brake system allows continuous release of the spring-accumulated cylinders on the brake axles. A gear double pump supplies the hydro motors of the fan drive systems. A further gear pump supplies the flushing circuit and thereby a cooling of the hydro motors in the drive axles. The flushing oil together with the leakage oil flows back to the hydraulic tank passing return line filters. An air compressor for 10 bar operating pressure (max. 12, 5 bar) and a max. flow rate of approx. 700 l/min. at 8 bar is installed to the diesel engine and supplies not only dehumidified cooling air for the terminal boxes via an air dryer but also air pressure for tire-inflating by a tire-inflating valve mounted at the coupling side. The revolutions of the diesel engine are adjusted by an electrical actuator (E-Gas); an electrical operating magnet effects the shut-off. An electrically operated preheating system in the air intake tube allows an engine’s starting-limit temperature of approx. – 20° C (- 4 °F).

The PPU and thereby the platform trailers have to be operated by a remote control; the starting and the “special mode operation” is possible directly at the PPU. Two versions of remote controls are available: a cable remote control which can be plugged to the power pack unit (PPU), the platform trailers or to the driver’s cabin and a radio remote control whose receiving unit can be plugged to the same positions as the cable remote control. The operating and control instruments as well as the programming box for the steering are installed in the terminal boxes and arranged weatherproof. The terminal boxes are of stainless steel and the degree of protection IP65 acc. to IEC 60529. Beside the necessary control elements, also pressure gauges for the 4 (four) support groups of the platform trailers respectively platform trailer combinations are installed at the power pack unit (PPU). The muffler is equipped with an integrated spark arrestor which is in accordance to the group of devices GI and GII, respectively the category of devices M2 and 2 concerning the ATEX-directive 94/9/EC. A spark arrestor is a precondition for operating the power pack unit in areas where inflammable or potentially explosive gas/air mixtures can appear.

The fuel lines to the diesel engine are passing a fuel filter with water separator, protecting the fuel injection system from soiling and water.

For connection of the hydraulic and electric supply of the platform trailers, the appropriate lines are split to the left and right at the coupling side of the power pack unit (PPU) and equipped with screw-type quick couplings. The couplings are provided with dust caps, which protest the couplings during non-operation. For parallel coupling of two or more power pack units, additional coupling sockets for the electrical power and control lines are arranged at the sides of the PPU. The PPU is arranged on the lamellar coupling of the platform trailer by means of a hydraulically operated coupling bolt. Two hydraulic tilting cylinders, installed to the upper frame of the PPU and to the platform trailer allow the PPU to be tilt from a horizontal to an upward position, thereby avoiding ground contact when accessing ramps. It shall be observed when driving up-hill or down-hill the PPU will never be tilted more than 12° lengthwise, differing from the horizontal for a longer time. Otherwise engine damage may happen because of oil deficiency.

The lower side of the power pack unit (PPU) frame is equipped with four (4) plastic rollers to allow the PPU to be moved on paved ground. For handling and hoisting, at the upper side of the PPU-frame four (4) crane eyelets (2 of 15 t and 2 of 8 t capacity)) are installed. That allows lifting of the PPU along with attached 6-axle platform trailer.

At the coupling side of the PPU an aluminum box with cover for storing the remote controls and an accessories box are arranged. Both are protected by hinged and lockable aluminum plates.

Corrosion Protection and Coating: Steel structures will be shot blasted by means of gravel acc. to SIS 055900 – SA 2½ before coating. Two prime coatings with 2-component-primer and a dry-film thickness of each with 50 to 70 µm, one top coating with 2-component-top coat Scheuerle Standard RAL 7016 grey and a dry-film thickness of 40 to 60 µm, total dry-film thickness approx. 150 to 190 μm; metallic bright parts are yellow chromicised. Different colouring on customer’s preference available against surplus price.

Ambient Temperatures:

SPMT – power pack units can be operated within a ambient temperature range of – 20 °C up to + 40 °C (- 4 °F up to 104 °F) and a relative humidity of up to 100%. The operation within special conditions differing thereof, e.g. lower or higher ambient temperatures, impact of aggressive media like gases, dusts and liquids, multi-shift operation and long-distance trips, have to be agreed by SCHEUERLE.

Operating and Maintenance Manual:

Operating and maintenance manuals will be supplied in the operator’s language, the spare-parts list bi-lingual (German/English), as CD-ROM and one paper copy of the operating instructions. Upon request and against surplus price, more paper copies of the manuals can be supplied.
