Splashathon 2019 costume ideas Ahoy there Water Babies! Batten down the hatches...it’s the Tommy’s Splashathon! Our theme for Splashathon this year is Pirates and Princesses – there is no reason why girls can’t dress as pirates and boys dress as princesses so why not let them choose what they would prefer!

Costumes don’t have to be expensive or take hours of sewing, here are some quick ideas but feel free to use your imagination. Remember your little one’s safety is paramount so teachers and pool owners might have some safety suggestions before getting in the pool! Please don’t use glitter or fabrics with glitter, beads or sequins or flaky fabric paint that could contaminate the water.

There are plenty of simple costumes you can put together for your little one that won’t break the bank. Here are a few of our favourites:

Yo ho ho!You will need:

A bandana A white cheap basic t-shirt A belt or scarf tie Wrap the bandana around the hair

• Use scissors to remove the collar, cut and fray the edges of the neck, sleeves and hem of the t-shirt

• Add a belt or tie another bandana around the middle

• Team it up with a pirate’s cutlass for the full effect

Fairy tale dreams! You will need:

Netting materialWide ribbonCo-ordinating swim costume or decorated vest

• There are some great online tutorials for how to make a make a simple tulle skirt or tutu

• Use fabric pens or sew on badges to a vest or use a pretty swimming costume under the skirt

• Tiaras and wands can be used for added Princesseness!

• A plain baby grow can be transformed into a pirate outfit with a skull and crossbones patch – readily available online

• Or why not use your artistic flair and use fabric pens to draw your own?
