Sailor Free - Spiritual Revolution Review by G. W. Hill

The mix of progressive rock sounds here is quite diverse. At times I hear Pink Floyd, at other points King Crimson. Still other sections are quite spacey. All in all, it works to create an effective album.

Track by Track Review

Spiritual OuvertureSpacey atmospheric prog opens this and moves it forward. Eventually it powers out to a more rocking jam with some fusion in the mix. There’s a mellower, jazz meets space and world music section later in the track that works quite well.

A New WorldAfter a short flourish of keyboards, this powers out into the hardest rocking music we’ve heard so far. It has vocals and seems to run somewhere between progressive rock and alternative rock.

The RunA spoken bit starts this, then it works out into something like King Crimson meets fusion. It drops back for the dramatic and almost theatrical vocals. There really is a definite King Crimson-like feeling to a lot of this. They take it to some great, slow moving melodic progressive rock that’s quite modern in tone as it continues.

The CurseComing in mellow and melancholy, this moves slowly and has some deep vocals in keeping with the tone. This builds quite slowly and really has a lot of 1980s sound in the mix. Eventually it moves out to harder rocking territory as it continues. It turns out to a harder rocking jam that’s got some Pink Floyd in the mix before dropping way down for a mellow segment with female vocals. Then it shifts back to the earlier section to continue.

DaeronPretty, mellow, keyboard dominated progressive rock starts this off and the vocals come in with that motif. After a while this turns heavier, but the same general musical tones and concepts remain. It’s a powerful piece of modern progressive rock. It’s evocative and very effective. The guitar does become more prominent later when this starts to really rock out.

Spiritual RevolutionHard rocking progressive rock with a lot of retro stylings is heard here. It works through a number of changes and almost gets into some world music sounds, and there’s a Santana like jam later in the number. They also give us a cool retro keyboard dominated section. A little bit of old time music ends it.

WarThere’s sort of a garage band jam at the beginning of this, interrupted at points by a narrator. Then it works out to a cool rhythmically based jam that rocks out nicely along with progressive rock sounds. It works through a number of changes and alterations.

The EntropiaThis powers out after a cool introduction into something a bit like Vanilla Fudge or Deep Purple with more of a pure prog slant to it. It goes through a number of changes, dropping down to keyboard based space to end.

FaithlessSeeming ready to fire out into hard rocking music early, instead this piece turns towards more proggy space sounds to continue. Then, a little before the one minute mark, it powers out into hard edged jamming and the vocals come in over the top of that arrangement. In a lot of ways, parts of this remind me of Captain Beyond. There is some seriously harder rocking jamming later, kind of like a proggy version of The Cult. It works through some killer melody as that section continues onward.

Beyond the BordersNoisy guitar with Eastern tones opens this. Then, after that mode holding it for a while, it powers out to something a bit like surf music meets progressive rock. The vocals see a return of the 80s element as the music turns to more melodic (but modern) progressive rock. It’s quite an intriguing number working through several different sections. Comparisons to Tool might be appropriate at times, but at other points Hawkwind might work and still other fit neither of those acts. The chorus is among the most accessible of the set.

Break the CycleSound effects start this before percussion with keyboard elements washing over becomes the mode of the cut. It’s a space rock jam as it develops, and it’s quite cool.

My BrainThere’s a lot of psychedelic music in this cut along with more of that 1980s vibe. It turns towards jam music at times and overall this rocker is perhaps more alternative rocker meets psychedelia and less prog, but it still fits in a modern progressive rock way. It drops later to a mellower section that’s atmospheric, quirky and very cool in a modern progressive rock way. It resolves out to some triumphant sounding melodic progressive rock to eventually end.

A Great HopeA spoken bit opens this and then the jamming ensues running through space rock and fusion territory in a killer progression of sound. This is arguably one of the tastiest rockers of the set. It’s a melodic instrumental that really does a great job of closing the set in style.

Ci vuole un carico di ambizione pesante come il mondo per realizzare un concept album di questa portata, soprattutto se la band che lo edifica è una formazione emergente e non un grande e noto nome del panorama alternativo mondiale. Il fulcro di questo Spiritual Revolution dei Sailor Free è il concetto di energia inteso come esistenza, dinamismo, spirito creativo, mezzo di progresso collettivo. Interpretato come fulgore, ardore, sostegno, fluttuazione e potenza del rinnovamento. Come intuizione della ragione e dell’anima, come voglia di conoscenza. Allontanarsi dalle strade comuni e conservatrici per sperimentare nuove vie che possano permettere un arricchimento sociale condiviso e di grado superiore cosi da ridistribuire correttamente l’energia. Il punto di partenza dell’intera opera, la fonte d’ispirazione, è il Silmarillion di J.J.R. Tolkien (Il Signore Degli Anelli, The Hobbit). L’opera è essa stessa base dei capolavori di Tolkien ed è il fondamento di tutto il mondo creato dall’autore, una sorta di Bibbia che racconta la genesi e la vita di una realtà parallela e/o futuristica, un cosmo che non esiste se non nella sua mente e in quella dei suoi lettori. Tale testo, forse non molto noto al grande pubblico, è in realtà spesso stato punto di partenza per diverse band ( Blind Guardian, Marillion) che hanno trovato nelle parole del grande autore britannico l’ideale guida per la ricerca e lo sviluppo delle loro necessità compositive. La storia, volendo riassumerne gli aspetti per noi più utili, narra l’amore tra due entità, particelle disperse di due universi, le cui traiettorie finiscono per intersecarsi per via della loro attrazione, finendo per generare un’immediata fusione. Da tale aggregazione vi è una nuova nascita che li porterà in un creato alla deriva del quale si trovano obbligati a cambiarne le sorti, attraverso la conoscenza da condividere in maniera osmotica con l’umanità tutta, alla ricerca del benessere comune e non del personale appagamento dei singoli. Partendo da queste premesse, avrete capito che si tratta di un disco complicatissimo ed effettivamente lo è, anche sotto l’aspetto prettamente musicale. I Sailor Free scelgono un modo di fare musica caratteristico di decenni addietro, gli anni del progressive e della psichedelia, ma riescono a portare quest’idea di componimento in età moderna fondendo elementi propri del passato con le caratteristiche del rock alternativo moderno. La loro opera diventa il punto più alto di una carriera ventennale e il risultato di otto anni di assenza dalle scene. Spiritual Revolution è un lavoro colossale e mastodontico che si può definire come il manifesto musicale di un nuovo modo di pensare (vedi Spiritual Revolution People). Dentro i quattordici brani si alternano diversi movimenti, disparate melodie, un’infinità di cambi di ritmo, stili che viaggiano nel tempo, spesso all’interno dello stesso brano. La stessa “Spiritual Overture” è una serie di passaggi dall’ambient mantrico e religioso, attraverso la drone-music, a momenti di epico progressive, fino a riff taglienti e scenari psichedelici anni sessanta/settanta, per chiudersi in un Pop delicato e misterioso, grazie all’apporto del piano di David Petrosino. Non mancano pezzi in cui è la matrice Alternative Rock moderna a farla da padrone (“A New World”, “Beyond The Borders”), con sezione ritmica pulsante e chitarre acide e aggressive, cosi come non scarseggiano accenni al Rock anni ‘80/’90 stile The Cult e non solo (“The Run”, “Betray”, “The Faithless”, “Spiritual Revolution”), al Prog Rock/Metal stile Muse o Tool misto a schitarrate Hard Rock (“The Curse”, “Spiritual Revolution”, “War”). La calma che contraddistingue alcuni brani (“Daeron”, “My Brain”) sembra richiamare alla mente anche la scena di Canterbury nella persona del grande Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine) di Rock Bottom pur non disdegnando elementi propri del Pop pre fine millennio. Innumerevoli sono gli inserti ritmici e melodici tipici della World Music (“Spiritual Revolution”) cosi come gli ingredienti psichedelici, pressoché presenti in ogni brano dell’opera ed evidenti in maniera chiara ad esempio in ”The Curse”; non mancano inoltre brani esclusivamente strumentali che mescolano un certo stile moderno di Post-Rock con psichedelia e progressive stile Pink Floyd (“The Entropia”, “Break The Cycle”). Altri elementi caratteristici, anche se meno palesi, sono gli accenni alla psichedelia post industriale che si possono ascoltare in “The Curse” o nella parte iniziale dell’introduzione. Come vi avevo accennato quindi, la complessità di Spiritual Revolution non sta solo nel fatto che si tratti di un concept che muove i suoi passi da elementi letterari e da ideologie alternative. Si tratta di qualcosa di mostruoso anche a livello sonoro con continui passaggi, anche dentro lo stesso pezzo, da uno stile all’altro, da un movimento all’altro, da una ritmica all’altra. Hard Rock, Psych Rock, World Music, Post Rock/Metal, Alt Rock, Ambient, Drone Music, Pop sono gli ingredienti di un brodo primordiale diventato paradiso terrestre. Spiritual Revolution non è certo un disco che si può ascoltare con facilità e non è un disco per tutti. Ha bisogno di attenzione, tempo, buona preparazione. È l’esatto opposto di quello che la musica sta diventando. David Petrosino (voce, piano, tastiere), Stefano “The Hook” Barelli (chitarre), Alfonso Nini (basso) e Stefano Tony (batteria) ci hanno regalato un piccolo capolavoro e di questi tempi è meglio non farselo sfuggire.

This is definitely an album of ‘despites’. Despite not having English as their first language, despite this being a concept album and despite having a band name like a John Inman sit-com – this is actually a rather good record.

Hailing from Italy but not really slotting into the Rock Progressivo Italiano model, Sailor Free have been around for a few years now and certainly know their way around a tune.

‘Spiritual Revolution’, despite (again!) my initial fears that it may be some sort of God-bothering nonsense, is a concept album inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Silmarillion’. The press blurb goes on in some detail about mankind, osmosis, a better world and mind and spirit, which usually has punters running for the hills, but the music, despite (again!) all this bollocks, is worth persevering with.

Sounding to these ears like a prog/Goth band fronted by a an ‘80s indie band singer, the fourteen tracks on offer deliver the whole diversity of how good progressive rock music should be played.

Swinging from crunching guitar rifferama to delicate keyboard and acoustic passages in an instant, the album maintains a high quality level throughout.

While no awards will be won for pushing the boundaries of music onto another level, Sailor Free have delivered an album of considerable merit well worthy of a listen by all those tired of the general pap on offer these days.

E’ un falso impatto semplice quello che offre Spiritual Revolution, l’opera-rock dei Sailor Free ispirata al Silmarillion di J.R.R.Tolkien.I veterani della scena progressive-rock romana Sailor Free, infatti, hanno realizzato un album cattivo quanto basta, ma soprattutto complesso ed articolato, dove barocchismi alla Muse convivono sapientemente con echi di Ian Anderson e irruenze metal.Soprattutto, Spiritual Revolution è un disco che svela e nasconde, ascolto dopo ascolto, colto citazionismo e zampate di puro genio compositivo.In altri tempi, in altri luoghi, quest’album sarebbe diventato un’opera teatrale musicata dal vivo con una messa in scena da kolossal; qui e ora rimane “solo” un buon disco che reclama un’attenzione difficile da trovare in quest’epoca di distrazione di massa. Ma concedere ai Sailor Free tempo e ascolti ripetuti regalerà molte soddisfazioni.

SAILOR FREE - Spiritual RevolutionTide

All’inizio degli anni ’90 avevano pubblicato un paio di album, anni difficili per il prog, il movimento stava lentamente e faticosamenterialzando la testa, poi diciotto anni di silenzio ed ecco che la band romana torna a farsi viva con questo disco. Non conosco le vicendeche hanno tenuto i Sailor Free lontani dal loro pubblico, sta di fatto che siamo contenti di ritrovarli e accogliere questo loro nuovo disco.

Il titolo dell’album è il titolo del concept che sta sotto il progetto, una rivoluzione spirituale, che passa attraverso l’amore di Sebastianae Eleanore, l’amore umano come metafora di un cammino spirituale, ma non c’è nessuna contraddizione, è sempre stato così, in fondocosa c’è di più rivoluzionario e forte dell’amore?

Il disco parte con “Spiritual Overture”, un brano complesso, che presenta parti nervose, che seguono la scuola dei maestri del progpost moderno, come Tool e i Porcupine Tree più metallici, ma anche altre che richiamano il prog più classico con tanto di flauto, un belmix di elementi solo apparentemente distanti tra loro. Ma il concetto è molto più chiaro ed evidente nella seguente “A New World”, moltomoderna e poco incline a retrospettive musicali. Non è mia intenzione fare un track by track, anche perché è un concept album e i branisono ben quattordici, ci sono atmosfere proprio riuscite, tese fra senso di mistero e tensioni nervose di buon spessore. La tenebrosa“The Curse” è un piccolo capolavoro gotico. I Sailor Free dimostrano una grande abilità nel miscelare tante sonorità e tante idee, rendendotutto molto personale e altamente godibile. Uno dei momenti più articolati e complessi è proprio la title track, che appare quasi come uncaleidoscopio di idee, dal folk al tribale, al metal prog alla sperimentazione, un gran pezzo. Certo non è un album facile, ma la complessitàche esprime premia gli ascolti ripetuti e la voglia di penetrare un mondo musicale pieno di sensazioni forti, di sapori pieni e di grandeimmaginazione.

Gran bel ritorno questo, i Sailor Free hanno dato vita ad un disco maturo, che non teme paragoni con molti lavori stranieri e sarebbedavvero bello se il loro nome cominciasse a girare nel modo giusto, con la speranza di avere presto nuovi lavori su cui mettere le nostreavide orecchie.

Con oltre venti anni di attività e ben otto di assenza dalle scene, il poker d'assi capitolino dei Sailor Free si ripropone con il caratteristico sound rock progressive contaminatodalla psichedelia e da aspetti pop nel nuovo album, "Spiritual Revolution". Ispirate all'opera letteraria di J.R.R.Tolkien, il Silmarillion, vengono offerte quattordici tracce dellequali, un annetto fa, si è avuto un primo assaggio con il clip di “Daeron”, brani molto orientati al movimento Spiritual Revolution People ed al sociale, tenendo come concetto dibase: Se tutto è come prima, niente può più essere come prima. È così che si cambia davvero.”Il lavoro offerto dalla band è notevolmente poliedrico e ricercato, infatti, ci ritroviamo nell'ambientazione di un colossal musicale ove le scene melodiche cambiano addiritturaall'interno dello stesso brano, offrendo scenari differenti in base alla situazione. L'inizio dell'album è affidato a “Spiritual Overture” che, come appena citato, offre due minuti distralci di vita moderna proposti in mini strisce, quasi fossero proiettate da numerosi tv sintonizzati su canali differenti.I successivi quattro minuti sono un viaggio strumentale, dapprima post moderno e, successivamente, quasi anticheggiante. In a “New World”, brano assonante allo stile Muse,scopriamo la parte vocale, molto simile per timbrica alla voce di Harry McVeigh dei White Lies, specialmente nel pezzo “To Lose My Life”; sul finale veniamo trasportati da unasession strumentale ammaliante. “The Run” ha delle assonanze generali con i The Cult pur offrendo una buona coralità vocale, mentre “Betray” è un interlude che ci immergein un'ambientazione quasi post-industrial con chitarra granitica e un Acid Mug di tastiere. Veniamo assaliti da una sorta di Modern Psichedelia con “The Course”, che ci proiettain uno scenario di uno statico monologo interiore per poi assumere movimento con un pattern di chitarra alla John Petrucci. La profondità di “Daeron”, con sonorità contemporanee, ci avvolge sinuosa con le linee di tastiere ed il calore della vocalità di David Petrosino, episodio che, nel finale, ci propone un outro che suona molto Cranberries.“Spiritual Revolution” cavalca in chiave pop l'onda The Cult, un brano che rimane nell'orecchio anche dopo l'ascolto e che riprende l'Overture di inizio album. The Cult orientedè anche “War” che propone un main riff incisivo e trascinante; molto più Floydiana risulta la strumentale “The Entropia”, secondo brano “only music” dell'album.“Faithless” riprende le arie pop rock dei Muse, proponendo un main riff cupo e “spesso”; stesse sonorità le ritroviamo anche in “Beyond the Borders” nonostante appaianoparti di chitarra distorta come intro e psichedelici riff/bridge in pulito”. Terza sperimentazione strumentale è “Break The Cycle” costruita sui temi ricorrenti della decadenza edella psichedelica, ambientazioni che cambiano durante “My Brain” pur portando il timbro abbastanza evidente dei Pink Floyd di inizio carriera, culminante in un solo sul finalemolto toccante.La chiusura dell'album è affidata alla quarta traccia strumentale, “A Great Hope”, che pur restando sulla scia del pezzo precedente, si inserisce in scenari quasi spaziali per suonied effetti utilizzati. Un progetto audace ed ardito quello dei nostrani Sailor Free, in quanto, proporre ben quattro movimenti strumentali in un'opera del genere, diretta ad unpubblico di nicchia, rende il progetto paragonabile ad una medaglia: una faccia ci offre le chiare intenzioni ed idee della band, attraverso il cantato ed i testi, la seconda lasciaall'immaginazione dell'ascoltatore la scena in cui ambientare i brani. Sicuramente un disco che evidenzia una ricercatezza maniacale riguardo la strutturazione dei brani e la lorotracklisting, associata ad elevato tecnicismo, e ad una apprezzabile capacità esecutivo-compositiva.Un prodotto insomma, che necessita svariati ascolti per essere compreso appieno e valutato per quanto offre. Ma soprattutto, orientato ad orecchie sapienti e accorte.

SAILOR FREE ‘SPIRITUAL REVOLUTION PART 1’ (TIDE/ITALY IMPORT) What strikes me most about this album is the fact that they are an Italian band with an Italian singer likewise, but that particular vocalist (DAVID PETROSINO) has an accent-free voice, which does not happen a lot when we hear Italian singers. The sound/production of ‘Spiritual revolution’ is also huge and musically speaking they are going for an own sound, which combines Artrock, Progressive Rock, Avant-Garde, Progmetal, New Age and even some Industrial, although most of the time SAILOR FREE is a Progressive Rockband that sounds very much like a British or Dutchprogband from the 1990s progscene. That is not so strange if you know the background of this band, because SAILOR FREE was quite active in the early 1990s, with 2 album releases, which I have never heard sadly. They were inactive for about 14 years, but in 2010 they reformed and now this new album is released. Besides the fact their style is rather ambitious and reminds one also of bands like SYLVAN, ALIAS EYE and ELEGANT SIMPLICITY, so with a certain melodic part in the vocal department as well, this concerns actually a concept album based on the works of TOLKIEN and as the album title says part 1, a follow-up will continue this concept I think. Quite challenging and sounding very professional, this SAILOR FREE is without a doubt interesting for all progfans out there. More at: http://www.sailorfree.com

A 18 anni dal secondo lp torna la hard-prog band romana)

Se "dire la verità è un atto rivoluzionario", lo è ancora di più l'amore, forza dirompente che travolge e muta profondamente. Se si vuole cambiare la contemporaneità dominata dalla bruttezza, dall'arrivismo e dalla volgarità, bisogna cercare il rimedio in una "rivoluzione spirituale". Ad essa guardano i Sailor Free in questo gradito ritorno dopo 18 anni di assenza: un concept album anomalo, ricco di speranza e slancio metafisico, nato da uno spunto tolkieniano ed evolutosi come vero e proprio racconto allegorico.

L'opera narra dell'amore tra Sebastian ed Eleanore, personaggi e universi contrapposti, in un gioco a suo modo legato a "Felona e Sorona" delle Orme. Se però l'allegoria del trio veneziano era figlia degli opposti estremismi che dominavano il pensiero degli anni '70, la band romana si muove su altri lidi. Compresi quelli musicali. Nella grande anomalia che fu il progressive e che è stato il new prog, i Sailor Free hanno incarnato un'ulteriore diversità: il secondo lp "The fifth door" (1994) ipotizzava un trait d'union tra il nuovo prog allora in ascesa e il grunge dominante, "Spiritual Revolution" prosegue nell'incontro tra le articolazioni della scrittura progressive e la ruvidezza dell'hard sound.

Certo il plot segna per i SF un percorso obbligato, tra solennità e abrasione, maestosità e variazioni impreviste, episodi disturbanti alla Tool e heavy-prog dal sapore vintage. La band rispetta in pieno le logiche e gli sviluppi del modulo concettuale (l'ampia e rappresentativa overture, il senso del dramma che accompagna la narrazione, la sontuosa corsa verso il finale con "My brain"), si muove tra sofferto art-rock alla Queesnryche ("A new world", "The Curse"), valorizza sfumature, reminiscenze e assonanze tra new wave, moderna psichedelia e fragorose tempeste rock (vedi "The run" oppure ""The entropia").

"Spiritual Revolution" è un album ambizioso e complesso - con l'unico neo di una certa dispersività - che necessita di numerosi ascolti per essere compreso in pieno. Un felice comeback per David Petrosino e soci, mai come ora caratterizzati da un bel respiro internazionale.

review by: Marc Spiritual Revolution is a concept album by Italian Prog/Metal band Sailor Free. It offers a string of short to middle range tracks of mostly song based pieces, backed by powerfull and heavy soundscapes.

The music, although pretty much always on the heavy side of the spectre, can also be melodic and even radio friendly at times. It never gets technical, so don't expect something approaching Dream Theater for example. Lead singer David Petrosino has a powerfull and virile voice. He sings in english with no detectable accent.

Spiritual Revolution should certainly interest fans of heavy, intense, melodic and intelligent Prog related Hard Rock/Metal music. The musicians performances are excellent and the writing and composing very good. This CD is certainly of professional quality, including the packaging, that is one of the best I have seen for an independent production.

Check out this excellent Italian band if you are into this mucial genre.

Sailor Free Spiritual RevolutionRock, Progressive, Alternativo di Gabriele Bacchilega, 04/10/2012

Devo ammettere che sono partito prevenuto, visto che oggi i concept album mi annoiano e basta, ma mi sono dovuto ricredere. Certo, l'impostazione è quella di un kolossal letterario impegnativo e rivolto ad un pubblico di nicchia; poi spunta l'hard rock, il progressive, la psichedelia, la musica etnica, per finire sconfinando nel pop.

Insomma, un labirinto: appena ti sembra di aver capito il pezzo la band ti spiazza cambiando radicalmente traiettoria ma, cosa non da poco, riuscendo a mantenere quota e coordinate sonore ben precise. E se tenete presente che si spazia dai Pink Floyd alle melodie eleganti degli Spandau Ballet, passando per i The Cult (più di un semplice riferimento in “Spiritual Revolution”).

Un formazione atipica, tanto rischiosa quanto efficace. Una di quelle scommesse che può si può vincere solo se si ha talento, personalità ed attributi.

Free Sailor is an Italian group which we've reviewed the third album in 2012, Spiritual Revolution Part I.The group is about to go on stage and write the second part of Spiritual Revolution, the opportunity for us to ask some questions to David, singer and keyboard player of the group.

Neoprog : Could you describe in a few words the band Sailor Free, his genesis, his music ?David PETROSINO : It's hard to do that in few words and not to sound “wikipedian”. We have been friends and we have played together before Sailor Free started. With this band the main goal, since the beginning, was to create an own sound, free from genres and labels. We never had the same musical passions, but we've always shared the same goal, the same approach.

Neoprog : Spiritual Revolution is your third album after the eponym Sailor Free in 1991 and The fifth door in 1994, why so many years between the two albums ?David PETROSINO : We stopped our live activity with SF in 1996, working on other projects, but our personal, artistic and musical relationship didn't stop. We actually started working on this wider musical project some fourteen years ago. And we had to manage how to do a big production without big money.

Neoprog : A prog concept album in these years of easy listening music, techno and short radio tracks, why this choice ?David PETROSINO : The only chance we have, as artists, is to be honest and follow our personal sense of beauty and meanings. If you start cutting here and there to make it more “accessible” for the established taste, you are f...inished. I think the question is: do you want to do something to have success, or you want to do something, than try to make it successful?

Neoprog : In France, the release of a prog album is a real adventure and there’s not really an audience for this music, is it the same problem in Italy ?David PETROSINO : Yes, definitely. I think the question is around the word “professional”. This word means quality and money. To have good quality you need good gear, professional collaborations and all the time needed to think and to do. The problem is that mainstream and majors practically control every way to make it professional. And this is wrong! But I think it's a struggle we have to accept.

Neoprog : How arrived the idea of the album, the concept and the notions of spiral ? Is the story inspired by real events ?David PETROSINO : It has been a long process. We started inspired by a story included in The Silmarillion of Tolkien. Beren & Lùthien is a small story, a chapter of the book, but is so amazingly full of matters and meanings that we plan, at first, to write a musical or a rock opera on it. We had many meetings and sessions trying to catch our idea of spiritual revolution, the story of entropia, the music... Obviously we had stops. Some four years ago we met people from SRP spiritual revolution people; it's a movement and a website with creative ideas for change. The spiral is energy and gives the idea of the big global change that is growing in the whole world.

Neoprog : Who does what, music, lyrics, is it a common work ?David PETROSINO : I had many musical project in my career, but I must admit that SF it's for me the real band. Although I write the lyrics, I write with The Hook most of the songs, everything comes out from common work. We often start with improvisation on a specific idea, or matter, and the collective arrangements are parts of the composition process.

Neoprog : There are many musical influences in the album, Harmonium, King Crimson, Pink Floyd... Could you tell the readers witch musics did you listen when you were young ? (for me it was JS Back, Johnny Haliday, ACDC and after that Genesis... yes, I Know)David PETROSINO : Well, I don't know Harmonium (and I'm sorry about that) but I think that King Crimson and Pink Floyd influenced music and musicians for decades. I don't know what to say, I'm honest. I love and loved so many different music styles... If you want I can make a list of a twenty, but I'm sure I would forget something important. When I was very young I thought that I was good in doing the music I like to listen. But that happened long before Sailor Free started. At a certain point you realize your real vibes and start to tell your own story.

Neoprog : Could you give us a top five of 2012 albums ?David PETROSINO :50 Words For Snow – Kate Bush, MMXXII – Killing Joke, Wovenhand The Laughing Stalk, Childhood’s end – Ulver, Heritage – Opeth

Neoprog : Stupid question, Spiritual Revolution is inspired by JRR Tolkien, have you seen The Hobbit and what do you think of the adaptation ?David PETROSINO : Yes, of course. I must admit that a trilogy on the Hobbit, that is not The LotR, sounds a bit commercial, doesn't it? But I'm so deeply excited about Jackson's reconstruction of the Middle Earth, that I’m happy to have other nine hours to spend there!

Neoprog : What are your projects now after this third album ? Live ? Writing and recording ?David PETROSINO : Hopefully the three of them! We mean to play this SR on stage (we'll start touring in spring), and than, being this album Spiritual Revolution part 1, we have to release part 2... we must complete the story. It's our mission.
