– “to follow instructions, obey, follow, be subject to” [BDAG],

– “to listen, attend to” [Thomas].

The Authority of Christ

• The Lord Jesus Christ has power over the physical (Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25; 17:4-6) and spiritual realms (Mark 1:21-28).

• He also commands our obedience (Romans 6:12-19), and will severely judge all who rebel (Romans 10:12-21; 2 Thessalonians 1:3-10; 3:14-15).

Spiritual MaturityDemonstrated by Obedience

• Obedience is required of children (Ephesians 6:1-3; Colossians 3:20), slaves (Ephesians 6:5-8; Colossians 3:22-25), and saints (Philippians 2:12-13).

• Mature examples include Abraham (Hebrews 11:8-10), Sarah (1 Peter 3:1-6), many priests (Acts 6:7), along with Christ Himself (Hebrews 5:8-10; Luke 2:51-52; John 4:34).

Spiritual MaturityManifested by Decisions

• Spiritual maturity is manifested by independent decisions (Philippians 2:12-13).

• Determine to do what is right even when no one else is watching (Genesis 39:4-15), knowing that God sees and observes all (Proverbs 5:20-23; 15:3; Hebrews 4:12-13).

Spiritual MaturityEvidenced by Devotion

• Spiritual maturity is evidenced by our devotion to a purpose (Philippians 2:12-13).

• Seeking something greater than sin or self, let us devote ourselves to the cause of Christ (John 6:26-27; Romans 2:6-11; Hebrews 6:10-12).

Conclusion

• Like Simon Peter of old (Acts 12:12-16), Jesus stands at the door an knocks (Revelation 3:20).

• Will you allow him entrance (John 14:23-24)?

• Will you answer the gospel’s call? (Acts 2:38-41)?
