Spirits in October 2012: Incredible Firsts Actor Information
Overview: Spirits in October drew 700 visitors last year to Riverside Cemetery where we put a human face on history by bringing to life the stories of people buried in the cemetery. Actors at graveside who interpret these stories and tour guides who host and narrate the tour make this a meaningful experience for our visitors. Available Roles: 1. Clemiel Barto “Pop” Walden (1906-1970)
Pop with son Alan and Eddy Cook Father of music enterpreneurs Alan and Phil Walden. In his latter years Pop traveled with Otis Redding on his European tour and loved Otis like a son. A traditional Southern man of humble origins with a noble spirit who bridged a cultural divide and experienced through rock-‐and-‐roll a world of travel, luxury, and intrigue. Casting: Man 50s-70, humble man with noble spirit, family man
2. Cecil Roberts Coke, Sr. (1916-2003) 3. Joseph Benjamin Coke (1909-1968) Photographed Ocmulgee Archaeology dig – 1st National Monument in Georgia. Joseph was 24 and his brother Cecil only 17 when they were hired to climb up rickety scaffolding and photo-‐document the site of the Indian Mounds being excavated by scholars from the Smithsonian. (Joseph had paid his way through college by photographing groups of debutantes and sororities and had a big box Graflex suitable for wide-‐angle photography). The Coke brothers later opened the first camera shop in Macon, which is still operated by their descendants on Cherry St.
Casting: 2 men, late teens to mid-twenties. Adventurous, entrepreneurial
Dates:
Performance dates are the last two weekends in October. Each role will be double or triple cast. Two shifts of actors per day (night). Shifts are 6:00-‐8:00 (with actors called for 5:00) and 8:00-‐10:00 (with actors called for 7:00). There is one Sunday afternoon tour. Groups are scheduled to set out every 15 minutes from 6:00-‐9:00, with the last tour ending at 10:00. Last stop is the Macon Public Mausoleum for a reception and exhibits. See details at ovations365.com Specific dates are Wed Oct 17th (Preview Party for sponsors and media, 6:00-8:0O, Th, Oct. 18, Fri Oct. 19 and Sat. Oct. 20 and Th Oct 25, Fri Oct 26, Sat Oct. 27 and Sun afternoon (3:00-5:00) Oct 28 Logistics: Actors are stationed at graveside and a guide brings groups of 15 people to each site to hear a 3-‐5 minute monologue or scene. There are lanterns lighting the actors after dark and luminaries lighting pathways. Each actor is provided a bench to rest on between performances and a basket or bag to conceal water, flashlight, phone. Other Requirements:
• Costume fitting • Voice and diction training will be provided to help you transcend the challenge of performing outdoors with ambient traffic noise nearby
