No names there that really scream Hall of Fame. I mean, come on- I know we loved Galarraga from his days in Atlanta (and his name is so much fun to say with the rolling “rr’s”), but he didn’t really have a HOF ca- reer. Many of my friends have been using every spare moment for the last several weeks, trying to fill their buck tag. Some are holding out for a certain deer, while oth-ers are not as picky. But no mat-ter which type of hunter they are, there is one thing that is certain; both are growing tired. The early mornings are becoming less excit-ing and the cold weather makes even the preparation that much more difficult. Some will lay their weapon down and wait until next year. For myself, I am also lingering a little longer on the pillow. The days of not seeing a deer seem to fill my mind more than the days that I have actually had some suc-cess. The battle is whether to be-lieve that the pursuit will eventu-ally bring the prize that I am so de-sirous of... and am I willing to wait that long. If you are like me, you have some pretty large pursuits. There are some events or accomplish-ments in your life that you are hop-ing materialize and that you have been working hard toward. Right now, however, you are tired from the pursuit. The days of drought

have turned into periods of doubt. The obstacles that once seemed conquerable now look insur-mountable. And the problems that you once overcame have simply been replaced by newer ones. The battle is now moving to the mind. The mind says quit, move on, and reach for something else more within grasp. The body and spirit agree. And then there’s the truth. Truth always trumps the mind, spirit, and body. It validates or voids. It confirms or nullifies. It reprograms the mind to reality, re-freshes the body, and reinvigorates the spirit. Truth does not need any prop. It stands alone, and it is there for us. Are you tired from the pursuit of your ambition? Are you linger-ing longer on the pillow? Is your mind telling you to quit and that there is no use to keep working toward the goal? If so, take a hard look at the truth. That is, find out what God says about your pur-suit. After all, He is Truth. He will confirm or deny what your mind, body, and spirit are saying about your search. And if needed, He will put you back on the right track; but not toward an easier goal, but

one that is in His perfect will and one that will give you the fulfill-ment that your are longing for. When that happens, you will no longer just work as if everything is up to you, but you will also pray as if everything is up to God.

By C. Edward Wilson Raiders Winning On and Off the Field As the Savannah Christian Pre-paratory School football team con-tinues its inevitable journey to the Georgia High School Association’s Single-A championship, individual awards are beginning to be distrib-uted to those most worthy of a wonderful and magical season for the Chatham Parkway School. The illustrious award for the best high school football player in Chatham County was awarded to senior running back Chris Barnwell. Although he sat out two games due to injuries, his reputation and credentials backed up his skills and convinced those voting for the award that he was worthy enough to earn the coveted Mike Finnochai-ro Award. The Red Raiders will take on Darlington on the road this week af-ter shocking Lincoln County, also on the road, 7-0. The most amazing thing about the victory over the Red Devils was that they had not lost a play-off game in years on their home turf. Chris Barnwell scored the only touchdown for the game and sent SCPS into the quarterfinals Darling-ton. Update on Re-Classification of local schools According to information passed down from Earl Etheridge of the Georgia High School Associa-tions’ governing body, the Savan-nah Schools will remain as Class-AAAAA schools and Benedictine Military School is petitioning to get back to 3-AAAAA after leaving sev-eral years ago to go down to the 2-AA level. Savannah High, Beach, Jenkins, Bradwell, Groves, Savan-nah Arts Academy, Johnson and Windsor Forest makeup the remain-ing contingency of the region, along with Camden County.

Looking at basketball … The Groves basketball team won its third game in a row after losing the season opener to Meadowcreek High in upstate Georgia. The Reb-els had to stage a huge comeback against the Johnson High team, but eventually won late in the contest by a 63-61 count. Keenan Ready led the way with 26 points, while Rad-ford University bound Jareal Smith finished with 31 points. Groves returns to the hardwood this Friday, when they travel over to Hinesville to take on Bradwell Insti-tute. Singing the National Anthem When Savannah State Universi-ty hosted the Georgetown Universi-ty basketball team on 21 November at Tiger Arena, a familiar voice sang the National Anthem. Asa Nails, Sr., father of former Groves’ standout Asa Nails, Jr., sang the National An-them to a packed arena, as well as the Georgetown basketball website seen nationally and internationally. Nails, is a local business man who sings at most of the Groves High athletic events and is con-sidered by many to be one of the premiere singers in this part of the country. “I was invited back by the Savannah State Athletic Depart-ment to sing at the SSU girl’s bas-ketball game versus the University of Georgia in December,” Nails said. walked up and said that a bullet had just come into his home too. That bullet had gone through his window, through the living room, into the kitchen where it was found laying on the floor. More Deputies were now searching the neigh-borhood, and found a spot in the woods across the street where the shooter may have been. They soon located a suspect carrying a pistol that matched the caliber of the found bullets. The man said he’d been target practicing, and showed them the target he’d posted on a tree. He was apparently unaware that the bullet that missed the tar-get completely on the left, and the one that missed completely on the right, had both gone throught the woods and struck the homes across the street. Both victims agreed to let the man repair their homes. The man even told them they could pick the contractors they wanted to do the work, and he’d cover all the expenses. The man also surren-dered his handgun to the Deputies who took it for safekeeping.

Adding a dimmer switch can save you money. The dimmer switch cuts back on the power to the fixture, giving you less light while costing you less money. Here’s how to change an ordinary light switch to an energy-saving dimmer.

Always turn off the electricity at the main panel to prevent accidentally shocking yourself. Use an electrical tester to make sure it’s off before be-ginning. With the power safely off and the switchplate cover removed, re-move the screws holding the elec-trical box in place and pull it out to expose the connections. Standard wiring should have black wires and a ground wire run-ning to the existing switch. These will need to be removed from the switch. If they are ragged or look worn out, strip off some insulation and expose new wire for your new connections. Your new dimmer switch should be the right size for your light fix-ture, based on the wattage, and will have directions for hooking it up inside the package. Basically, you will reconnect the black wires and the ground to the new switch, push it back into the box and tighten the mounting screws into place. The switch cover goes on next, and you can turn the power back on to test your connections. This is a very simple thing to do, and if you handled it OK, you might consider changing out some other switches to dimmers as well. They even make some similar con-trol switches for ceiling fans, which can make them more convenient and energy-saving, too.

* * *Q: I know it’s early, but I wanted to get your preservative formula for Christmas trees. Every year, I try to make my tree last as long as I can, but I think a preservative might help. Care to share? -- H.L.

A: Of course! Glad you asked. Start with a gallon of warm water, and add 4 tablespoons horticultural iron powder, available at a garden-ing center. Pour in 2 cups crystal-

clear corn syrup, available at your grocery store. Next add 4 teaspoons liquid laundry bleach. Mix well. This mix goes into the receptacle in the tree stand. As this liquid evapo-rates, add warm water.

A: You don’t need an anchor, but you do need a level. Just use a 3- or 4-foot level, placed in all directions, to level the machine. The front feet will adjust by turning to lift the front up or down to get it just right. Unless you have some internal problems, this should resolve the issue and keep your washer from flying the coop!

* * *Petroleum jelly is an incredibly useful concoction. It’s perfect in the shop and super in the home. We bet you would love a list that we have put together of some of the many uses we have found for this stuff in and around the house. Some you may have tried, but hopefully oth-ers will be new to you. Heck, you may have some clever uses that we didn’t list. If so, let us know and we will add them to our list. If you would like a copy, just send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to us

at the newspaper, and we will get it out to you ASAP. We also will have it posted on our Web site at www.thesuperhandyman.com.

* * *A SUPER HINT -- Salt can be sprinkled on a frozen sidewalk to help melt the ice, and it can work in a drain, too. Just pour a little salt down the drain, and with a little time and some luck, the drain should thaw out a little faster.

* * *Dear Al: I waited too late to caulk around my windows, so I had to pick a semi-decent weekend to do it. I wrapped the caulk in a heat-ing pad to warm it up before going outside with it. It worked great this way. It was really smooth and easy to apply, and cured quickly. I had to pick a couple of days that were above freezing so it would set up OK, but I think I timed it right. -- J.R.

I mean, the “he went to Jared” spots are in full bloom, there’s the Kay Jewelers commercial that depicts the woman as some helpless goob who’s scared of a thunderstorm. Add to that list the Gap com-mercial with the 10 year old girls doing the “cheer”- and dressed in clothing that would look skanky even on adults- and ANY commer-cial featuring Christmas carols with lyrics altered to promote the store...

The White Sox front office has sabotoged their team a tad more this off season, signing Andruw Jones to a one year contract. Jones hit .214 with 17 homers and 43 RBIs in 82 games with Tex-as this season- which means there are still at least 17 pitchers in the majors too stupid to throw him a

breaking ball...

If the rumors are true, is Tiger Woods the Chuck Finley for the 2000s? Was he driving a Buick when the “incident” happened? Does this mean they’re gonna jabber on about him even MORE?

I know it’s wrong of me, but I kept yelling at the TV Saturday- pleading for someone, anyone- Bobby “I’m-642-years-old” Bowden, even- to actually put a real hit on Tim “I’m a little girl” Tebow. And THEN go smack Vern Lundquist, Gary Dan-ielson and the little sideline bimbo around until they shut up with the hero worship. And to hear Danielson accuse the ref who gave Tebow a hand up off the turf of favoritism when they can’t stop fawning over the guy is just laughable... As always, send your questions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322. God, bless America.

------------------------------------

After enjoying a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal at home in Pooler, Andrew Smith hopped a plane to Las Vegas for a little des-sert in the desert at the 1st Annual INEX Turkey Leg Race held on the Silver State Road Course at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In the heat race, Andrew found himself starting near the rear of the field. On Lap 1, he had moved into the 2nd spot, but a caution forced a complete restart. After taking the green flag, Andrew worked his into the fourth spot when another car got into Andrew in one of the corners and spun him out. By the time he got the car straightened out and going again, the field had pulled away some-what, but Andrew was able to run down the pack and wound up tak-ing the checkered flag in second place.

Andrew started the ten lap feature race on the inside of the second row. At the halfway mark, Andrew was able to draft by the leader and take over the top spot. He was able to maintain his dis-tance over the second place car to take the win in his very first trip to the Nevada track. “This place is stupid, scary fast”, said Andrew when asked about the track. When he was asked if he liked the speed of the track, Andrew replied, “I’m not sure yet.” Judging from the weekend re-sults, he learned to like it a little better.

You can follow Andrew at these and other events by visiting his website at http://www.andrewsmithracing.com.

12-13 • The 35th Annual Holiday Tour of Homes, presented by the Downtown Neighborhood Association will take place De-cember 12 and 13. “Each year, the tour proves to be a wonder-ful opportunity for tour guests to visit homes and properties within the Historic Landmark District. Homes are decorated according to the home owner’s personal taste and tradition. The tour is a great way to get into the spirit of the season. This year we have added an Inn Tour on Sun-day, December 13”, said Marti Bockhold, Tour co-chairman. Two home tours are offered on Saturday, December 12. Each feature a different set of homes. The afternoon tour will take place from 11am-3pm and the evening tour will take place from 5pm-8pm. Tickets are $30 per person per tour. A self-guided walking tour, participants visit each home at their own pace and select their own starting and end-ing point. While the day tour is strictly a walking tour, Old Town Trolley Tours has teamed up with the Holiday Tour to provide eve-ning tour participants the option to ride one of their designated trolleys that makes stops along the evening tour route. The Inn Tour will be offered on Sunday, December 13, from 12:30pm-3:30pm. Tickets are $20 per per-son. The purpose of the tour isn’t just to get people into the spirit of the season, the purpose goes much deeper. This Tour is the major fund-raising event for the Downtown Neighborhood As-sociation, a volunteer based non-profit organization. Proceeds generated from the tour are given back to the community in the form of grants to help maintain and enhance the historic dis-trict and to work in partnership with organizations that impact the community through educa-tion, safety, music, and children’s activities. We couldn’t put on such a fabulous tour without the generosity of the homeowners, volunteers, advertisers and spon-sors, said Bockhold. This year’s sponsors include: Old Town Trolley Tours of Savannah, The Savannah Bank, The Savannah Morning News and The Plant-ers Inn. Visit dnaholidaytour.com to read more about the Holiday Tour of Homes, the Downtown Neighborhood Association, a list

1923 YELLOW CABRIDERS TRAVELED IN STYLE; DRIVERS SUFFERED IN DISCOMFORT

Pity the poor driver of this 1920s taxi. His compartment was only par-tially enclosed -- no roll-up windows in the doors to keep out the wind, rain and cold. But passengers in the back com-partment rode in comfort, with windows that could be rolled up when necessary, with heaters in some cabs.

Picture a wintertime passenger call-ing to the driver, “Turn at this street, please,” and the cold, trembling, blue-faced driver, with teeth chattering, weak-ly replying: “W-w-w-what did you s-s-s-ay? It’s cold out here. Can’t hear you over the w-w-w-ind and r-r-ain!”

All Yellow Cabs before 1926, as well as many other brands of taxis in the ‘20s, had these partially open driver’s compart-ments. In 1926, Yellow had mercy on its drivers and finally built a fully-enclosed cab, after General Motors had taken over the operation during 1925. After that, improvements and restyling were more frequent. For 1930, GM renamed the Yel-low the General Motors cab. But because of Depression setbacks, GM suspended its cab production for 1935 only. This was Chrysler Corporation’s big opportu-nity to get into the act, by introducing De Soto taxis in the latter months of ‘35,

and when the ‘36 De Sotos appeared, its cab production increased rapidly, with another big wave of De Soto taxis in 1941, 1942 and 1946-1948. Thou-sands of the De Soto cabs were bought by the various Yellow cab franchised operators from coast to coast, and De Soto dominated the field until it re-styled for 1949 (a few months late, in Febru-ary). The 1949 De So-tos didn’t seem as big and roomy as before, so other makes en-tered the field. Checker Cab, popular since the 1920s, increased its share and was the most popular New York City cab until Checker bowed out in 1982.

Yellow Cabs and their counterparts of the early ‘20s are very rare now, but they sometimes appear in old movies from the 1920s and early ‘30s. One of Laurel and Hardy’s talking comedy shorts from 1933, “Me and My Pal,” has a Yellow Cab like this one featured prominently. Oliver Hardy is late for his wedding be-

cause he’s trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle while several kibitzers interfere -- including a tall, aggressive cabbie who’d been waiting around to take Hardy to the wedding, more than an hour late already. A brawl finally erupts, and the pieces of the puzzle end up scattered all over the room. In spite of all that, there are several scenes in and around the ancient taxi.

Dear Tom and Ray: We had a dead battery and called for a jump-start. The service agent could not jump-start the battery with his cables. He then proceeded to turn another battery over and lay it on top of my battery. Is this a common practice, and is this a safe practice? Could this have caused any damage to the electri-cal system? He left all the accessories on, and my headlights blew out and the alternator had to be replaced. -- SusanTOM: Can it cause damage? Appar-ently, yes!RAY: It shouldn’t, if it’s done correctly (leaving out, for a moment, the issue of spilled battery acid). When you jump-start a car, essentially you’re touching the terminals of two batteries together. You’re just doing it via cables. So if you remove the cables, it should work ex-actly the same way, electrically speak-ing.TOM: Unless you touch the wrong ter-minals together.RAY: Bingo.TOM: And that’s what this guy did. He hooked up the batteries backward. They were in series -- like when you line up several batteries inside the tube

of a flashlight. So instead of 12 volts, he sent 24 volts through your electrical system. RAY: Some accessories can handle that. For instance, if your windshield wipers had been on, the motor would just have pushed them to wipe so fast that the raindrops wouldn’t have known what hit them.TOM: Any accessories that were turned off would be protected, as would any components that are protected by fuses or fusible links. RAY: But some things just can’t handle 24 volts. Your headlights, for example, probably blew immediately. And if you’d had other lights on, like the tail-lights, they probably would’ve blown, too. Or at least suffered some damage that would’ve shortened their lives.TOM: And the alternator can’t take 24 volts because the diode bridge gets burned out. RAY: But there won’t be any hidden damage. Anything that was harmed will be apparent to you because it doesn’t work now, or is on fire. TOM: But you might notice that every-one on your car radio is now talking twice as fast.
