Three years ago doesn’t seem too far in the distant past. But for the Jefferson High girls cross coun-try team it might seem like ancient history. It was in 2009 that the Lady Cougars won the Class AAA girls cross country state cham-pionship. In both 2010 and 2011 the Jefferson teams couldn’t come close to duplicating that perfor-mance. Jefferson couldn’t qualify its team for either the 2010 or the 2011 state meet. And last year it couldn’t qualify an individ-ual runner for the state meet because none of the Lady Cougars could finish in the Top 10 at the Class AAA, Region II event. The best showing by a Jefferson High runner at last year’s Regional was by Mali-ka Briggs, who was 14th. Anya Wallace fin-

After dueling with Cabell Midland (and finishing second to the Knights at the 2010 state cross country meet), Jefferson was able to win the school’s first boys cross country state championship last season, edging Ca-bell Midland, 60-63, on the home course of the Knights in Ona. The Cougars state championship came in Coach Suzy Munnis’ first year as the team’s head coach. The leader of the march to the state cham-pionship was senior Eric Graf, who was sec-ond overall at the state meet to Cabell Mid-

The other gradu-ating senior from that memorable team was Sam Munnis, who fin-ished 11the overall at the state meet after not running in the Region II meet. Returning to the defending state cham-pions is senior Ryan Graf. Ryan was sixth

overall at the 2011 state meet. His time was 16:27.67 over the water-logged course at Ona. Andrew Milliron, now a junior, was 10th overall at last year’s state meet. Another im-portant runner in Jefferson’s team success at the state event was Jackson Jacobs, who fin-ished 31st overall in the “team placement” standings. If Jacobs, whose time was 17:56.4, had finished four spots lower, Cabell Midland would have repeated as the state champion. Jefferson’s other two runners in the state meet were Zach Wiberg, then a freshman, who came in 35th in 18:02 and Jimmy Ross, then a junior, who finished 58th in 18:49. If the Cougars are to compete successfully against the Knights again this season they will be facing an uphill challenge because Cabell Midland had only one senior in its top seven runners a year ago. In winning the Region II meet, Jefferson had Eric Graf finish first, Ryan Graf second, Milliron fourth, Jacobs 12th, Wiberg 14th, and Ross 17th. The group of Region II teams scheduled to compete this cross country season includes Washington, Hampshire, Elkins, Buckhan-non, Musselman, Hedgesville, Martinsburg, and Lewis County. And they will all see Jef-ferson as the defending champion.

It was Bridgeport, since moved back to the Class AA ranks, that was the Region II cham-pion. Both Hedgesville and Hampshire also did well enough at the Regional to qualify their full teams for the state meet in Ona. Coach Suzy Munnis is back for her second year as the girls cross country leader at Jeffer-son High. Munnis had other underclassmen on her 2011 team in Alison Munnis, Emma Lindberg, Emilie Meyers, and Payton Hoxton. Jefferson had enough runners to push and extend each other, but the inexperience and lack of a veteran leader was noticed.

The WVSSAC has released a schedule that has the Lady Cougars opening the season at the Knight’s Night Run held at Preston County High on Saturday, August 25. Large meets on the schedule include the In-terstate Classic at Clear Spring (Md.) High, the Forest Festival Meet in Elkins, and the Oat-lands Invitational just south of Leesburg (Va.).

Jefferson has just one meet at home at Sam Michaels Park and that one is on Oct. 3. The Region II Meet is in Elkins on Oct. 18, and should the Lady Cougars qualify their team or any individual runner for the state meet, that will take place on Oct. 27 back in Ona again at Cabell Midland High School.

First-year Washington High boys cross country coach Jerry Franklin has inherited a program that just graduated its top two runners from the 2011 team in Roland Rush and Greg Hawk. This will be Washington’s fifth year with a boys cross country program and the Patri-ots will be searching for more participants and better showings in regular season meets and the Region II meet at the close of the regular season. Washington was only ninth in last year’s Region II meet. Rush had Washington’s best finish in the Regional when he was 26th over-all. In its four years of sponsoring a boys cross country team, Washington has not been able to qualify any of those earlier teams for the Class AAA state meet. Coach Franklin will take the reins of a pro-gram that will be very young and mostly inex-perienced. Several of his runners have no var-sity cross country experience and the others have not fared well in regular season meets or in the Region II event. More interest and more intense off-sea-son training have to be two parts of the to-tal picture if Franklin is to have much suc-cess. Franklin will see his team’s early progress, as well as the quality of some of the area com-petition, when the Patriots begin the season on

Saturday (August 25) in the Musselman In-vitational to be run at the Poor House Farm course near Hedgesville. After the Clear Spring (Md.) Invitational on Sept. 1, Washington will host a Tri-Meet on Sept. 5 featuring Hedgesville and Musselman against the Patriots. Two large and very competitive meets fol-low when Washington is scheduled to run in the Forest Festival Meet in Elkins and then the Oatlands Invitational in Loudoun County (Va.). Toward the end of September, the Patri-ots are slated to com-pete in a three-school meet at Sam Michaels Park against Martins-burg and Jefferson. The big-school Poto-mac Valley Confer-ence Meet is on Oct. 10 at Poor House Farm. Five teams compete in that event. The Region II Meet is on Oct. 18 against Jefferson, Martins-burg, Elkins, Buck-hannon, Hampshire, Hedgesville, Mus-selman, and Lewis County.

High School. In the state meet, Ruiz would finish 49th overall. Even though her showing at the state meet was barely noticed across West Virginia, Ruiz had become a rarity among Washington High cross country runners. The Washington team failed to secure one of the three team berths allotted to Region II for the state meet. Those berths went to Re-gional champion Bridgeport as well as Hedg-esville and Hampshire. Besides Ruiz’s 10th place finish in the Re-gional, fellow Washington runners Rhina Murillo was 20th and Destiny Harrison was 29th. First-year coach Jerry Franklin takes over a girls cross country program that last year de-pended heavily on seniors Ruiz and Murillo and sophomore Harrison. The numbers were very thin and at times the Patriots didn’t have the needed five runners to qualify as a com-plete team. Cross Country rules allow a team to en-ter seven runners with the top five finishers

counting toward the team point total. Harrison could be Washington’s team lead-er this year. The remainder of Franklin’s first team could be inexperienced and full of under-classmen. The Washington girls cross country team is scheduled to open its season this Saturday at the Musselman Invitational Meet to be run at the Poor House Farm course in Berkeley County. Two meets are scheduled to take place in Jefferson County with the first coming on Sept. 5 in a Tri-Meet at Washington High against Hedgesville and Musselman. The sec-ond in-county meet will be on Sept. 26 at Sam Michaels Park against participants Jefferson and Martinsburg. The most-watched meets will be the Forest Festival event in Elkins and the Oatlands Invi-tational staged near Leesburg. This season’s Regional is scheduled for Oct. 18 and could have Jefferson, Hamp-shire, Musselman, Martinsburg, Hedgesville, Elkins, Buckhannon, and Lewis County also competing.

“Our key returnees will be Ryan Mumaw, Robert Fleming, Dylan Mumaw, Patrick Burgess, Tyler Sigler, and Hunter Hardy -- our six top players from last year,” said Washington High golf coach Rusty Staubs. “We went to the state tournament last season and we’ll have the same goal again. I just hope we play a little better than last year if we make it,” said Staubs, the only golf coach the Patriots have ever had. Washington finished in a tie for sixth at last year’s state tournament. Wheeling Park was the 2011 state champion with the Pa-triots finishing even with University High with a team score of 500. “During the three weeks of practice we had earlier this summer, there was one new player -- freshman Jacob Shuff -- who im-pressed me. He could be among our top six players this season,” mentioned Coach Staubs. Washington will have only a few practic-

Mellow, and Cody McDowell as their seniors last year. White has five juniors and freshman Glenn as the core of the 2012 team. And he waits to see if the expected improve-ment takes place, beginning with the Tri-County match. The Cougars opened the season on August 1 when they played in the rain-shortened Tri-County Tournament. Glenn recorded a 68 for 15 holes be-fore the round was halted when a thunderstorm struck the area. Lushbaugh had Jefferson’s sec-ond-best score with a 72. Jefferson was third at the Berkeley Springs Invitation-al. Lushbaugh (89) and Glenn (90) were the only two players to better 100 that afternoon.

The Regional will be played at the Stonewall Resort State Park on September 24. The state tourna-ment will be staged the following week,

again at Oglebay Park in Wheeling. Washington won its first match of the year, the annual Tri-County Tournament interrupted by rain after 15 holes. Ryan Mumaw was the tournament’s medalist with his abbreviated score of 58 with three holes to play. Dylan Mumaw recorded a 61 in his rain-shortened round. The Patriots left the other participating teams far behind in the Berkeley Springs Invitational where Ryan Mumaw paced the scorers with a one-under par 71. Dylan Mumaw fired a three-over par 75 as Wash-ington finished 28 strokes ahead of runner-up Hedgesville.

Seven freshmen will join with four se-niors -- Erica Thomas, Katie Meredith, Darion Brown, and Courtney Baker -- and four sophomores to comprise the 2012-13 Washington High cheer squad. Even though varsity Coach Kris Morris saw eight seniors graduate this past spring, she will have seven first-year members to bring to this year’s cheer squad. The seven freshmen new to the varsi-ty squad will be Dione Strange, Nikaletta Martin, Mariah Marrone, Megan Abdel-

la, Hannah Burgess, Carmine Guynn, and Kayla Keiser. There are no members of the junior class on this year’s squad. The four sophomores cheering and com-peting for the Patriots this school year are Madison Steeley (a cheer squad member last year as a freshman), Zehra Karagoz (also a Washington High varsity cheerlead-er as a freshman), Sierra Johnson, and Tay-lor Carroll. In the recent past, there have been three

major competitions held through the school year for cheer squads. Washington High will participate in the Class AAA, Region II event to be staged at Buckhannon High on Saturday, November 3 at 6 p.m. The other eight schools compet-ing in the Regional are scheduled to be Jef-ferson, Elkins, Martinsburg, Musselman, Hedgesville, Lewis County, Hampshire, and Buckhannon. The state cheerleading competition is slated for Saturday, December 8 at 10 a.m.

at the Charleston Civic Center. Brooke High will be the defending state cheer champion. Closer to home, the Potomac Valley Con-ference has also held a cheer squad compe-tition for the three different classes in this area of the state. Washington’s first football game is on Thursday, August 23 at Hedgesville and the 2012-13 cheer squad will be debuting that night.

The Jefferson High cheer squad has post-ed Potomac Valley Conference champion-ships in both 2010-11 and 2011-12. Last year, the Lady Cougar gold squad won the Region II competition and quali-fied along with seven other schools for the state competition in Charleston. Coach Destyne Peck’s squad had a num-ber of seniors among 2011-12 gold and maroon team members Alex Smith, Sid-ney Showman, Rebecca Rivera, Aaliyah Rice, Brooke Reaves, Emily Matlock, Syd-ney Masters, Casey Lyon, Kellie Kauffeld,

Kia Johnson, Kendra Jalbert, Tyler Hooks, Katie Hamilton, Tierra Hall, Amanda Gar-cia, Bailey Dillow, Dana Bishop, Veronica Arambul, Danielle Udy, Kenya Price, Tori Kauffield, Brook Bernhardt, Sylar Wal-deck, Amanda Stoner, Kyli MacCumbbin, Jourden Lesuer, Courtney Forshee, Brooke Fadeley, Ashton Hyler, Dottie Devine, and Tiana Davis. The gold team that won the PVC compe-tition had Price, Devine, Hyler, Hamilton, Rice, Lesuer, Forshee, Fadeley, Waldeck, Matlock, Davis, Masters, Stoner, Garcia

Lyons, and MacCumbbin. Fadeley and Hyler were named to PVC All-tournament team and Peck was named the PVC Coach of the Year. Jefferson cheerleaders provide spir-it and enthusiasm at the school’s 10 foot-ball games -- both home and away -- and throughout the boy’s and girl’s soccer sea-sons. They cheer at the girl’s and boy’s bas-ketball games during the winter with indi-viduals are also at volleyball matches and wrestling matches. Various parades in the county see the Jef-

ferson cheerleaders participating. Team members must attend at least 70 percent of the scheduled functions (includ-ing fundraisers, pep rallies, camps, and clinics) in order to participate in the Re-gional or State competitions. The 2012-13 cheer season will include the Class AAA, Region II competition in Buck-hannon in November. Schools participating in that precursor to the state tournament will be Buckhannon, Washington, Hedgesville, Elkins, Hampshire, Musselman, Martins-burg, and Lewis County.

The state event takes place on Dec. 8 in Charleston at Civic Center. Two teams from each Region will qualify for the state event. Brooke County was last year’s state champion.

The kernels have been few and far be-tween. Or they haven’t been found at all. Jefferson won one game in 2010. Jef-ferson won one game in 2011. Teams ran and passed well against the Cou-gar defense. And there was no great wealth of rushing yardage provided by the offense. Playing much the same schedule as it had in 2011, Jefferson needs a much more efficient group of linemen to give itself a chance to win more games. The Cougars play nine of the 10 teams they saw last season. Only Fairmont Se-nior is gone and it is replaced by Dunbar High from Washington, D. C. Eight of the nine teams that beat Jefferson last year return in Woodgrove, Mountain Ridge, Mill-brook, Sherando, Musselman, Martinsburg, Hedgesville, and Washington. The Cougars beat Keyser and the Golden Tornado are on this year’s schedule. After graduating 13 seniors from last year’s team, the Cougars of Coach Richard Mills have 12 seniors for the 2012 season. Three of those seniors and sophomore quarterback Andrew King comprise the nu-cleus of the offense. Rynal Newman is the tailback and figures to get a majority of the rushing attempts. Darrod Doleman and Geoffrey Walker are the wide receivers where King will aim most of his throws. King needs time to throw, the same as any quarterback. He didn’t often get that time last year when he was on-field, mostly as a back-up. He is about four inches taller and 40 pounds heavier than he was as a freshman. John Dempsey, sophomore Lawrence Morris, and John Bryant will have various roles this season. Marcus Burns is a first-year varsity player. Two of the linemen that could provide respite from the sting of the one-win seasons are junior Taylor Carter and senior Dustin Marker. Casey McDonald was a starter as a junior last year. Linemen hold the key for the Cougars. Linemen on both sides of the ball. Depth will have to wait -- the Cougars need to identify some starters that can play. Special teams? Placekicking has been a sore spot for years. Finding an adequate long snapper has been a constant problem. Defending kickoffs and punts? When you are 2-18 over the past two seasons, problems seem to grow like weeds treated with Miracle-Gro. The schedule has the teams that got the best of Jefferson. Those teams aren’t like-ly to be diminished. So, Jefferson has to be better. And any improvement will only come with linemen who can play.

BOB MADISON Spirit Staff Anybody bothering to scout the Washington High football team when it has its two scrimmage games will come away asking the same questions as everybody else. “What will they do at quarterback?” now that multi-year starter Tyler Wilt’s status is still clouded by a health problem. Wilt was diagnosed in the spring with a rare form of cancer. His result-ing treatments have made his status for the 2012 season un-clear and the Patriots under head coach Mark Hash have been trying to make do if Wilt is unable to play. Hash also has to replace a group of seniors from last year’s 5-5 team that had the school’s best record but couldn’t find a state playoff berth. Last year’s starting seniors included Tyrek Collier (a four-year regular), Andy Scott, Larnelle Patterson, Jalen Jackson, Cody Diehl, Austin Larcomb and Bryant Currence. Collier and Currence both made known they were going to Shepherd as college freshmen. Rangy wide receiver-defensive back Kendell Smith is not playing football this season. Two play-makers from the 2011 defense are Drew Hetzel and Tony Vazquez, both se-niors this season. Hetzel was an around-the-football linebacker and Vazquez also was a starting running back as the Patriots achieved their first non-losing season. Washington should return many of its starters along the offensive line. And that fact alone should make any necessary transition to a quarterback other than Wilt much easier. Hash has starting offensive candidates Patrick Baylor, Dante Washington, and Matt Harris on hand. All three may play multiple positions -- even quarterback. Colin Gustines is a two-year starter and is still only a junior. Gustines started in the de-fensive secondary as a freshman in 2010. Washington will be one of the first schools in the state to begin the 2012 season when it opens on Thursday, August 23 at Hedgesville. The Eagles spoiled Washington’s 2011 de-but, beating the Patriots at Marcus Field. Four Virginia schools appear on the schedule. Handley and Sherando usually present winning seasons while Skyline and Strasburg are the other two Virginia-based schools on the schedule. Two-time defending state champion Martinsburg heads the list of the six West Virginia schools on the 10-game schedule. Musselman, Hedgesville, Jefferson, and Hampshire are the other Class AAA schools and Frankfort is the lone Class AA school from West Virgin-ia. If Wilt is sidelined by his health problems, the Patriots could throw less often than last season. Wilt is an option quarterback whose runs to the outside often gave the Patriots the impetus to begin scoring drives. Washington didn’t throw all that often even with Wilt, whose passes while rolling out made opponents guess whether he was going to run or throw. Active and productive linebackers could be the forte of this year’s team. Most playoff teams have a corps of playmaking linebackers. An aura of uncertainty hovers over Washington’s 2012 season. That uncertainty could cloud the season . . . or it could be shoved aside and the Patriots could win enough games to reach the Class AAA playoffs for the first time.

Last year was one that could just as eas-ily be buried under a pile of bricks and for-gotten. Jefferson’s volleyball team was winless, losing all 29 matches it played. But the Lady Cougars had three juniors on last year’s team that had valuable expe-rience playing for travel teams . . . and that should help the 2012 team show improve-ment. Shannon Lyons was last year’s most valuable player, but she was a senior.

There were a pair of youthful freshmen a year ago in Hunter Slivka and Brittany Osteen. A versatile contributor in 2011 was Molly Langland. Langland was the libero for much of the season. Coach Sandy Hayes could floor a team that is noticeably better than last year’s but still the wins could come grudgingly be-cause of the caliber of competition seen around the area in Musselman, Hedges-ville, James Wood, and Handley. Finding reliable depth could be a prob-

lem again this season for Coach Hayes. The Lady Cougars could find just the jolt of confidence they need to get off the floor when they play Hagerstown’s St. Ma-ria Goretti in the first match of the 2012 season on Aug. 29 in the Maryland city. Jefferson has home matches scheduled with Musselman, Washington, Martins-burg, Hampshire, Hedgesville, St. Maria Goretti, Handley, and Berkeley Springs. Teams to be seen on the road include St. Ma-ria Goretti, Handley, Martinsburg, James

Wood, Hedgesville, Hampshire, Berkeley Springs, Fort Hill in Cumberland, Mus-selman, Washington, the Pumpkin Smash at Hedgesville High and the Frank Quad on Oct. 6. SCHEDULE

Washington High had plenty of useful seniors on its 2011 volleyball team. With Becca Walls, Nikki Ashbaugh, Beata Lien-hard, Kelsey Lineburg, and Amber Curry as veter-ans to stabilize the Patriots, Washington was able to register a winning season under Coach Ian Hill-man. Nearly all of Washington’s frontline players were either seniors or experienced juniors. Even though it had some success with its tested veterans, Washington was still unable to win enough and do enough to earn itself a Sectional champion-ship.

Amber Barr was one of the useful juniors on last year’s team. She will be a player to watch in this her senior year. Replacing all five of the seniors from the 2011 team will be a difficult task. With them went most of Washington’s scoring . . . and most of its leader-ship. The Washington schedule will keep the Patriots close to home. The most distant matches will be played in Cumberland in the Fort Hill Tournament on Sept. 22. All the rest of the road tests will take Washington no farther than Stephens City to face Sherando.

Other Frederick County (Va.) schools on the 2012 schedule are Millbrook and James Wood. Teams from Region II include Musselman (two matches), Hedgesville (two matches), Martinsburg (two matches), and Jefferson (two matches). With one match scheduled against Berkeley Springs (at home in the season finale on Oct. 23), the Patriots show more home games than road tests. The Patriots will present many new starters this season. The younger players will have to be ready to provide the kind of performances that were seen from Curry, Lienhard, Lineburg, Ashbaugh, and Walls.

After winning five consecutive Class AAA, Section 1 girls soccer titles, Jefferson High was cast off its throne in 2011 by Washington. And each season after winning those five straight Section 1 titles the Lady Cougars were able to get Region II championships that led directly to the state tournament semifinals. But last year, Jefferson was taken down by Washington. The Lady Cougars lost three times to the Patriots. That bitter taste probably remains in the mouths of Coach Katie Myers and players like high-scoring Rachel Ransom and versatile Kiersten Barnholt. Jefferson did have a winning season . . . but it fell short of the previous season’s successes. Ransom and Barnholt are now seniors, as are Maria Russo and Stella Barrat. Ransom was the area’s leading scorer in 2011. Jefferson is not used to falling short of its goals. With no shortage of underclassmen returning from the 2011 team there could be some very competitive matches with Washington just in this county alone. Tomorrow (Thursday, August 23) will see the Lady Cougars at home in Shenandoah Junction for a 7 p.m. meeting with Regional rival Hampshire. After a long, one-game road trip to Parkersburg to play the Big Reds on Saturday, August 25, the Lady Cougars won’t be back at home until Sept. 11 against Musselman. The first of two regular season games against Washing-ton will be played on Sept. 13 in Shenandoah Junction.

Jefferson High Girls Soccer Jefferson will also be traveling to face Wheeling Park, St. Maria Goretti, and Berkeley Springs. The Lady Cougars will test Regional rival Buckhannon on Sat-urday, October 6 in a match slated to begin at noon. With potential all-state players in Ransom and Barnholt, Jefferson may be away from celebrationg a Section crown for only one year.

Washington High boys soccer seniors Daniel Hepner, Daniel Bouchoc, Brian Warfel, Josh Newhouse, Tim Kowalski, Jacob Shupe, Tim Goben, Kyle Wilson, Sam Ward, and Jon Wall would probably like to end their high school careers on the same field in Beckley where the seniors on the 2011 team did. Only they would want the outcome of the Class AAA state championship game to end differently. Instead of falling in the championship game like the Patriots did to George Washington last season, Washington would win that final game and reap the laurels reserved for a state winner. The Patriots brought back a large wooden trophy as the state runner-up. They could bring back a larger one if they can manage a state championship . . . led by the 10 seniors on this year’s team. Washington defeated Wheeling Park, 2-1, in the semifinals of the state tournament and then were stopped, 5-2, by George Washington in the state championship game. The overall record was 15-8-2 and the Patriots scored 72 goals as opposed to their opponents 49 goals. Among the key seniors on the 2011 team were Alden Roth, Cody O’Meara, Kris Robins, and Robert Brosh. Bouchoc is leading scorer among the returnees. He had 22 goals and eight assists as a junior. Myles Newhouse, now a junior, totaled eight goals and had nine assists. Hepner contributed seven goals and eight assists to the cause in 2011. Ben Capriolo totaled six goals and also had an assist. Coach Kevin Robins can call on Hagan Wilt,

Washington High Boys SoccerEvan Snyder, Cole Reistrep, Tim Hubbard, James Reynolds, Mesfin Butera, Zac Stehney, and Ryan Brandenburg as his other non-seniors this season. Kowalski played in four games as a Patriot goalkeeper in 2011 when Roth was the usual starter. Making it as far along the tournament trail as the state championship game meant the Patriots were the 2011 Sectional and Regional champions. The teams in Section 1 of the Region this season will be Martinsburg, Jef-ferson, Musselman, Hedgesville, and the Patriots. The four teams from Section 2 that comprise the rest of the Region are Buckhannon, Elkins, Lewis County, and Hampshire. If Washington is better than all those teams it will be back in the semifinals of the state tournament again.

In 2010, Washington High was able to post its first win-ning season in girls soccer when the Patriots finished with a 10-8 record. But Coach Tim Michael’s team still couldn’t unseat Jefferson as the Sectional champion. Last year, in the school’s fourth year, the Patriots de-feated Jefferson three times en route to winning 16 of their first 20 games, including two ties. The third win over Jefferson was a 4-1 verdict where two goals by Natalie Adams gave Washington the lead that held up as the Patriots claimed their first Sectional ti-tle. Adams would later score a third goal against the Lady Cougars. Washington took a 16-2-2 record into its Regional match against Bridgeport. Several of the graduating seniors from last year’s team that were able to take the Sectional title with them as they

marched down the center aisle at Shepherd’s Butcher Cen-ter were Angel Dixson, Jessica Fort, Jordyn Dillman, Amy Stewart, and Kim Di. That team had a number of juniors in Adams, Angel Ferro, Erin Buchanan, Natalie Reinford, Morgan Fox, and Rachel Kauffman. The sophomores that helped raise the Patriots to such winning ways included Brianna Hester, Stephanie DeLawder, Kayde Gustavel, Kaleigh Pierce, Kylie Nelson, Katelyn Silveous, and Adriana Grady. Hester had a goal when Washington got its third win of the 2011 season over Jefferson, the last being the convinc-ing victory in the Sectional tournament. McKenzie Turn-er played a key role in that third win over Jeffertson. She contributed an assist. Gustavel had been a force in the ear-lier Sectional win over Hedgesville, where the Patriots had a 4-0 win. She was credited with an assist and scored one

of the four goals. Hester provided two goals in the win over Hedgesville. In his fifth year, Coach Michael now has a talented nucle-us of midfielders, defensive players, and returning scorers. Starting this weekend (Friday, August 24), the Patriots will be seeing some stern competition when they are in Charleston to face Charleston Catholic and then the next day will play Winfield on the road. Besides the teams from the Eastern Panhandle, Wash-ington will also be playing Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy, Buckhannon, Altoona (Pa.), Mountain Ridge, St. Albans, Parkersburg South, and Elkins. With last year’s Sectional success just behind them, the Patriots will be looking for a second consecutive title . . . and then a possible spot in the four-team state tournament in Beckley.

Coach Matt Slacker and the Jefferson High boys soccer team open the 2012 season on Sat-urday, August 18 when University High (Mor-gantown) visits Shenandoah Junction for a 3 p.m. game. Slacker has a number of players returning from his 2011 team . . . and he will be able to count on lettermen from the school’s upper three grades. Don Boucher and Pelle Tracey will give Slacker experience, and Travis Wiberg returns along with juniors Austin Ogden and Catolino Leon. Matt Saghy and Alex Navarro were team members a year ago. Dylan Donlon, Sam White, Ben Howar, Bryan Orcutt, and Austin Doughty will all be vying for playing time as the Cougars try to unseat Washington High, the defending Sectional winner and 2011 state run-ner-up. Brett Stewart, Tucker Ryan, Miles Dixon-Gross, Jack Barrat, and Hunter Koppenhav-er should help the Cougars in their quest for a Sectional title . . . and possibly more. There will be four players slated to play for both the junior varsity and the varsity teams. Those four players are Jacob Lowe, Daniel Hussion, Lane Butts, and Anthony Wenner. Some of the just-graduated seniors from the 2011 team that will be missing this season will be Tyler Lambert, Nathan Eddy, Alex Webb,

Ryan Kubic, and Christian Thomas. Jefferson’s longest road trips are to play Parkersburg and then later traveling to face Wheeling Park. Besides defending Sectional winner, Washington, the other schools in the Region II, Section 1 bracket are Martinsburg, Hedgesville, and Musselman. The survivor of the Section 1 tournament will face the winner of Section 2 which has El-kins, Buckhannon, Lewis County, and Hampshire.

When the state tournament semifinals come on Friday, November 2, the Region II representative will be playing the Region IV representative which will come from a group that has Hurricane, Nitro, Point Pleasant, St. Albans, Win-field, Cabell Midland, Huntington, Spring Valley, and Lin-coln County. George Washington (Charleston) from Region III is the de-fending state champion.
