spirent Cs8 deviCe tester
For System Design and Platform Testing
Spirent’s CS8 Device Tester offers unprecedented realism and efficiency to developers of LTE, UMTS, CDMA and multi-mode UEs and MS’s. A single hardware platform can now be used in radio protocol development, IMS protocol development, platform system testing, and location-based services development. It brings value to every stage of mobile device development, shaving weeks or months from time-to-market calendars.
Spirent’s CS8 provides a wide range of multi-technology testing scenarios for the device development engineer, making this single platform the ideal solution at all stages of the design cycle.
CS8 introduces the most advanced Evolved Packet Core (EPC) emulation available. This state-machine-based EPC brings realistic IPv4/v6 network-side message responses and timing to the lab…without requiring a single line of script. CS8 boasts multi-cell, multi-RAT capability, the industry’s most flexible, configurable IMS implementation, integrated MIMO support and interfaces designed to ensure efficiency and optimal testing workflow.

CS8 FOR SYSTEM/PLATFORM DvTCS8 provides a wide range of multi-technology scenarios, a fully developed real-time Evolved Packet Core (EPC) emulation and a completely configurable IMS implementation.
CS8 emulates an entire network for testing mobile devices designed for LTE, WCDMA, GSM, HSPA, CDMA and EV-DO (with Evolved High-Rate Packet Data [eHRPD]) networks. An intuitive GUI makes it easy to set up network scenarios for adversarial testing, data testing, Inter-RAT/handover testing, and much more. Message logging and decoding minimizes the time required for analysis and debugging.
CS8 provides full 3GPP coverage of 3GPP bands from 380 MHz to 3 GHz and it supports all of the bandwidths defined for UMTS and LTE. Optional fading and MIMO provide a complete one-box solution for UE testing and evaluation.
CS8’s EPC is a state-machine driven core, so:
• messages are delivered with timing that is representative of a live network, unlike some script-based solutions originally designed for conformance test.
• different networks composed of equipment built by different NEMs can easily be emulated
• network parameters can be changed on the fly, without expending time or effort to make changes.
• IPv6 testing is completely realistic… not just a translated IPv6 address in front of an IPv4 core, and not just dummy payloads in IPv6 packets
• back-end core functions (e.g. security) are implemented completely and realistically… no more finger-crossing when thinking about fine details during the release cycle
• not a single line of script is required. The network is complete, up and running when you need it.
CS8’s EPC emulation is the same proven design used by network equipment manufacturers when testing the network equipment your design will attach to in deployment. In fact, if your design is facing operator acceptance testing in the future, it’s very likely that it will be tested against this same Spirent EPC.
CS8 also offers the industry’s most configurable IMS implementation, so you can replicate any NEM and operator configuration if you need to.

INTUITIvE GUI FOR FAST, ERROR-FREE SETUPDVT, debugging and testing should not be bottlenecks in achieving your time-to-market goals.
CS8’s graphical software lets you zoom in on low-level parameters without having to pore through manuals or specifications. Designed by engineers for engineers, the GUI’s clean interface makes it easy to “dive deep” and control the fine details of emulating a complete network.
With CS8, details are coded into drop-down boxes and laid out so that the most complex network configuration can be set up in a few minutes, with just a few mouse clicks. Once a configuration has been set, it can be saved and stored for future use. Drop-down boxes and intuitive layout make configuration fast, clean, and efficient.
REAL-TIME STATE MACHINECS8 uses a real-time state machine rather than the script-driven simulations common in most conformance testing solutions. Overhead, Layer 2 and Layer 3 messages are delivered with the same timing and with the same real-life responses as a live network.
Never again miss a timing bug because a script-driven state machine wasn’t capable of catching it. Never miss a protocol bug because a “call box” or “one-box radio test set” in the lab did not fully implement real-world network/packet core responses.
MESSAGE AND EvENT ANALYSISAs you work with CS8, the software continually parses and logs the Layer 3 messaging required in the interface between a mobile and a network. Unlike script-based protocol testers, CS8’s full-featured protocol engine constantly verifies message contents, just like a live network.
Double-clicking a message in the Message Analyzer window displays a fully parsed and decoded message for “deep-dive” analysis of message fields. Bugs that might otherwise take hours to find (or never be caught) are brought to the forefront in a matter of seconds.
This feature alone can shave weeks off your time-to-market schedule, and in many cases prevent you from deploying a buggy product.
CS8 enables custom call processing for instant adversarial testing and “what if” test cases.

DATA PERFORMANCE ANALYSISSpirent developed the first network emulator solution with full-bandwidth IP between the emulated network and DUT. Today, Spirent’s fully emulated EPC delivers a realistic IPv4 and/or IPv6 connection… not just dummy IPv6 packets like other test solutions that claim to “do IPv6”. For data testing, a simple Ethernet cable connects a mobile under test to data servers, file servers, and even Internet-hosted web sites and servers, including overlay services and high-speed packet data services for complete mobile performance testing.
You won’t have to script a protocol stack just to create a poor imitation of a connection. Spirent’s CS8 is a real network connection with the realistic state-machine-based timing and responses of a live network… and it’s ready to use whenever you need it, without days or weeks of preparation and scripting.
For VoLTE and IMS-related testing, CS8 offers a completely flexible, configurable IMS implementation. This means that no matter how a network equipment manufacturer or network operator decides to implement IMS, device testing can completely address all the possible configuration options that a device might encounter in live deployment.
CS8 delivers complex realistic Inter-RAT testing in an easy-to-use, easily interpreted GUI.

INTER-RAT TESTINGSpirent has long been known as a leader in providing realistic test solutions for Inter-Radio Access Technology (Inter-RAT) testing of devices, and CS8 is the ultimate realization of years’ worth of experience in this area.
CS8 packages multiple cells, technologies and networks into a single UI. Thanks to realistic anchoring points in the CS8’s network-grade EPC, LTE/CDMA and LTE/UMTC Inter-RAT handovers work exactly the same way they would in a live network scenario.
SERvICE INTERACTIONThe phenomenon of one service (e.g. voice, data connectivity, GPS, SMS, etc.) affecting the performance of another is called “service interaction.” While service interaction issues have a significant impact on the end user experience, they are rarely covered in User Experience tests.
CS8’s Development Library’s UI-based framework allows creation of repeatable complex service interaction scenarios in a matter of minutes. Coding is not required; tests are completely customizable both in terms of network parameters/protocols and the message sequence.
GNSS & HYBRID LOCATION TESTING Your lab may already employ Spirent’s market-leading solutions for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) emulation and testing. Now solutions from Spirent’s world-class positioning-technology experts can be automated and enhanced to streamline the development process.
Developing GPS and GLONASS capabilities in a mobile device or chipset? Working on SUPL 1.0 or 2.0? Wondering how you’ll address over-the-air testing, including the testing required by CTIA requirements? Part of a group charged with implementing OTDOA? Or hybrid (GNSS/WiFi/sensor) location technologies?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, look into the unique R&D capabilities now offered by Spirent, one of the world’s leading authorities on mobile positioning.
Spirent’s CS8 puts a complete realistic wireless environment under your control, whether it’s a single LTE cell or a realistically dense multi-generation multi-RAT scenario.
