Thanksgiving is just over a week away.Does that surprise you? Are you ready? Adventwill begin Thanksgiving weekend on Sunday,

December 1st. Our annual Hanging of the Greens Service to kickoff the Advent Season will be that night (December 1 st) at6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary and the traditional Tasting Party will

follow in Drowota Hall. Then, Walk Thru Bethlehem will be thefollowing Sunday, December 8th. All of this to say, it will be abusy time at Woodmont between now and the end of the year.

Thanksgiving is a time for us to slow down and count ourblessings in life. Truth be told, we are often guilty of takingthose blessings for granted. We often overlook things like faith, marriage, family, church, food on the table, a house, clothing, health, health care, friendship, children, grandchildren, freedom, education, and a host of other things. Deep down, we appreciatethese things but sometimes, we do take them for granted. We getcaught up in the rat race of life and find ourselves simplywanting more. Paul's letter to the Philippians is an excellent

epistle to read leading up to Thanksgiving. It is short, powerful, and inspiring. He writes in chapter four, "Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is anyexcellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think aboutthese things." Just a few verses later he says, "I know what it isto have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and allcircumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and ofgoing hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can doall things through Christ who strengthens me." That, right there,is a Thanksgiving sermon.

As a church, we too can take things for granted. We areblessed in many ways here at Woodmont. But here are somethings I don't want us to overlook this Thanksgiving season.Remember the second part of the word "Thanks-GIVING."

SUPPORTING THE CHURCH FINANCIALLY Weall have to support the church with our time, talent, andtreasure. Through October, we are lagging behind on therevenue side of our budget. This is not unusual for this timeof the year. Many will wait until December to make afinancial contribution to Woodmont, and I have always saidthat we really never know how we are doing in terms of our

budget until we get through December. Just remember that

we cannot do everything that we do at Woodmont withoutthe financial support and sacrifice of members. We all mustsupport the mission and ministries of the church.

WALK THRU BETHLEHM This is one of the greatestgifts that Woodmont gives this community year after year, and it takes a massive amount of volunteers to pull itoff!! We turn the lower level of our church into the village ofBethlehem at the time of Christ's birth and roughly seven

thousand people will walk through. It is truly a greatWoodmont tradition. We need everybody to play a roleeither in costume or behind the scenes. This is a church-wideeffort. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other peopleat Woodmont and to help others experience the real meaningand joy of Christmas. To sign up, enter or click on this

link: www.WTBWoodmont.com or call Steve Smith at414-5899. If you see Paul and Pam Hardin at church, pleasethank them for chairing WTB for a SEVENTH year in arow.

ROOM IN THE INN This happens every Friday night atSouth Hall during the winter months. We house roughlytwelve men from the downtown mission. We pick up ourguests, bring them to the church, provide them dinner, letthem have a good night's sleep, feed them breakfast, givethem a sack lunch, and then take them back downtown. This is another ministry that has been happening for years atWoodmont but it takes lots of volunteers to make it

happen. Overnight hosts seem to be in demand the most, andstarting this year, couples are now allowed to do that. If youwant to volunteer for Room In the Inn, email Mary Kiger [email protected]. Small groups and classes areencouraged to volunteer for a night together.

This Thanksgiving, I hope you will think about both partsthe word THANKS & GIVING. The best way for us to githanks to God for our blessings is to give back and help otheI have listed three ways to do that, but obviously there amany more. Once again, hear Paul's words from Philippians: "not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer asupplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made knoto God. And the peace of God which passes all understandwill guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." TThanksgiving and Advent, may we all find that peace whi

    passes understanding.

    Blessings,

P.S. Please keep Steve and Deb LaForge in your thougand prayers. They are leaving this weekend for the Philippinto help with Typhoon Disaster Relief through Hope FoInternational. Steve and Deb, thanks for all you do to represWoodmont and inspire the rest of us!

When it comes to the annual arrival ofThanksgiving and Christmas I remain a childat heart. The (roughly) thirty days that linkthese two holidays lift my spirits like no other

time of year. I suspect many of you share these sentiments. But there are issues of planning and preparation that can cause

the spirit of this season to be dampened. As I was ponderingthese things yesterday I had a modest revelation. Let meexplain

In this modern era, with families spread across the countryand the globe, planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas isnecessary, no doubt. I'm certain that many Woodmont familiesare in the process of determining their destination for thebig Thanksgiving meal (or meals) and negotiating when andwhere their primary Christmas gathering (or gatherings) willbe. Who will host the meal, who will make the turkey, whowill bring the apple pie, why are we having tomato aspic, what

time will we eat, when can we leave and who's going to tell so-and-so we're not coming to her house this year? Lots ofemotions get knotted up in such questions and answers:

feelings get hurt and nerves frayed. It is a human reality theven in the most joyous seasons perhaps mostly in the mjoyous seasons we get ourselves all twisted up and divertfrom the happy essentials. Shame on us!

I am trying to teach myself a lesson this year and maybe

will hold some significance for you, as well. As believersGod's mercy and grace we have no business "preparing to gthanks." Rather, our hearts and minds should be in a perpetustate of thanksgiving. This, of course, is much easier said thdone. So, a large portion of my prayer is devoted to askiGod's Spirit to make mine a grateful heart not tomorrow, nNovember 28thor December 25th but always. This will nbe easy but

Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossibl

but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26)

    Happy Thanksgiving!xo - Thom

Preparing to Give Thanksby Thom Schuyler,Director of College & Young Adults

The Minis-treeby Andra Moran, Creative Director for "The Bridge"

What's bendable, twinkling, full ofopportunity, and rolls on wheels? If youguessed "a minis-tree," you are right!

The Minis-tree is the collective brainstorm of our

ministerial staff exploring how we can partner with our

congregation on special projects.Woodmont is truly blessedto have a congregation full of giving hearts and hands. TheChristmas season, we welcome the Minis-tree as a way to pairprojects with volunteers.

Here's the scoop:The Minis-tree will arrive at Woodmont on December 1

It will be strung with ministry-project ornaments beari

requests from the ministers at Woodmont.

You are invited to take an ornament and get involv

    in a one-time hands-on gift to our church's mission.

Perhaps you'll pick the ornament that invites you to hosyoung adult supper gathering, or serve on a creative teamThe Bridge. Maybe you'll get to be part of a Nashville FoProject run, or be a substitute teacher for a Sunday Scholesson. You might even choose to pitch in with VBS orGEMS event! There are plenty of fun opportunities for ages, interests and abilities!

The Minis-tree will be on a rolling cart and will "appeaaround the church for the month of December. Act fast: Eaminister only gets to hang 5 ministry project ornamen

    so choose yours early!

We know that Christmas is the season for giving, and wthank you in advance for participating in giving back Woodmont by partnering with our ministers through tMinis-tree.

Room in the Inn Clothing Drive

Room in the Inn has kicked off for the season and the clothing donation bin announced last week is finally here! As the weathgets colder our guests are definitely in need of clothing items to keep them warm. As many of you know, every weekly guestallowed to select two items from the clothing closet, which means we have to regularly maintain the inventory. This year weare partnering with Thriftsmart to manage clothing donations for RITI. All of our used donations will be put in the bin on thechurch campus and they will pick it up every Monday or Tuesday. Then our donations will be weighed and will be credit to agift card we can use to make specific purchases we need for the RITI closet at a 50% discount. Not only will this save us timand help us be strategic with stocking the closet, but it will also help an amazing organization. Once RITI is over, we'll be abto use those gift cards to support other needs, such as victims of crisis, NFP families, etc. For those that don't know, Thriftsmis a Christian-based thrift store that, unlike other thrift stores, uses 100% of their proceeds to support four Nashville-areacharities. Learn more about the organization and their mission at www.thriftsmart.com.

We're doing a BIG clothing drive starting now through December 8 th. Everything collected through then will be immediatelycredited to a gift card to stock the RITI closet (after that they will only update our account and send the gift card once a

quarter). The Thrifstmart donation bin has been placed in the Outdoor Chapel parking area (where the Blessing of the Animaand the Sunrise Service take place). You can start loading your donations in plastic bags and putting those in the bin as oftoday! Thriftsmart will accept gently used men's/women's/children's clothing, shoes, housewares, linens, books, and furnitureHowever, everything MUST fit into the bin so please don't place items outside of it. If you have larger furniture items to donyou can drop them off at Thriftsmart (4890 Nolensville Road) and mention they should be credited to the Woodmont ChristiaChurch account. Also, Thriftsmart is happy to provide a receipt for your donation for tax-deduction purposes if you drop offyour donation at their physical store.

You can also contact April Gung if you would like to donate new men's socks, Thriftsmart gift cards, give monetary donationor have questions about your donation. April's email address is [email protected]. Monetary donations can bemade at any time by writing a check to WCC and noting that it is for the RITI clothing closet. The checks can be mailed to thchurch or dropped off at the church office for Chris Beck to process.

Feel free to donate in any way your heart so calls you. Again, for the first big push we would LOVE to have any donations ycan make by December 8thso we can stock up the closet (it's a little bare right now!). Let's make this a great and WARM winseason for our RITI guests, as always modeling the warmth and compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
