Proposed Budget and Mini Sabbatical by Dr. Clay StaufferProposed Budget 2015-2016
The Woodmont Board is proposing a $2,419,375 operating budget for the 2015-2016 church year which begins on July 1, 2015. This reflects an 8.5% increase from this years budget of $2,229,000 which is significant. This does not include the Preschool budget which is just over $600,000. To date, we have received 319 pledges totaling
$2,152,895. This is the first time in the churchs history that the pledged amount has surpassed the $2M mark. We came very close last year. This is great news and will allow us to further our mission and outreach here at Woodmont. I want to thank Tom and Kathy Patten and the stewardship committee for their great leadership. I also want to thank all the members of Woodmont for your participation and commitment to the church. Your generosity makes this possible.
There are details of the proposed budget in this edition of The Spire. Please note that this budget reflects $272,295 total outreach which includes free rent and bills for the Nashville Food Project. It includes cost of living and merit based raises for the staff as well as the creation of two new positions: a Childrens Ministry Coordinator (Maddison Grigsby) and a part time Business Administrator (to be filled). This also includes significant resources to take care of our beautiful facility and to continue funding the Tom Mathias Property Reserve Fund. On Sunday, June 21st at 10:30 a.m. (Fathers Day), we will hold our congregational meeting in the sanctuary where the congregation is being asked to approve the leadership slate and the proposed budget. If you have any questions about either, please do not hesitate to contact me or a board member.
Mini SabbaticalIn 2012, my employment agreement at Woodmont was
revised to offer a six week mini sabbatical every three years. You might recall I had one that summer (when I had passport issues going to Cambridge). I will be taking those six weeks this summer during July and the first part of August. Here are the basic goals of the sabbatical:
Time for rest, prayer, and spiritual renewal, Family time with Megan and my children, Working on a book for Chalice Press tied to the
research I did at Sewanee, Planning ahead for the next chapter at Woodmont. Some might ask, Why a sabbatical? I dont get a
sabbatical from my job. The word sabbatical (from the Latin sabbaticus and the Greek sabbatikos) literally means ceasing or a time of rest. However, in our culture, it is a time away from the ordinary routine to accomplish something specific and to do some self-care. Six weeks will go by quickly. Roy will be running the staff and will do a majority of the preaching in the mornings during this time. This is appropriate given his experienced background as a Senior Minister in Memphis. Trey and Justin will be preaching some as well. We have very capable and talented staff members who can cover anything that comes up. Ministry is a demanding vocation and sabbaticals offer a time to sharpen the saw while looking ahead to the future. I am thankful for this opportunity and I can assure you that it will be productive. My plan is to be back in the pulpit on Sunday, August 16th which will also be the day that we dedicate the New Preschool building at 12:30 p.m. I will be preaching through the end of June.
Blessings,
The Blessed Light That Yet to Us is Dark by Tallu QuinnOne weekday morning months ago, I wandered
into the Campbell Stone room to look for something Id misplaced the Sunday before and found a womens prayer group meeting inside. Liz Anne Allen said to me We were just praying for you, Tallu! We pray for you every week.
Ill never forget it. I pray for my church family too, and this week, I wanted to share this Wendell Berry poem in which he writes about the Light that carries us through the stuff of life.
We travelers, walking to the sun, cant see Ahead, but looking back the very light That blinded us shows us the way we came, Along which blessings now appear, risen As if from sightlessness to sight, and we, By blessing brightly lit, keep going toward The blessed light that yet to us is dark.
Sabbaths 1999, VI by Wendell Berry
This morning, I pray that you, in all your searching and anger and big questions, will feel Gods peace that passes understanding. And in all your brokenness, your grief, and all your loss, I pray you will feel Gods strong arms holding you. And in all your joy, you will feel Gods joy. And in all your hope for the future, I pray you will feel Gods faithfulness.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall beCarry on,

The Garden of Prayer
Spotlight on Living Generously, Changing Lives is a new page published bi-weekly in The Spire newsletter and covers one of the many ways Woodmont is fulfilling its mission - Seeking God, Sharing Love and Serving Others. This weeks spotlight is on The Garden of Prayer - a spiritual sanctuary and sacred space on Woodmonts campus that is sustained solely through the love, and hard work of volunteers and your generosity.
We are an open, loving and accepting congregation of people from diverse backgrounds, who share an extraordinary level of compassion for others. We fearlessly open our hearts and give of our time, talent and treasure on a daily basis to serve the Lord and change lives.
Spotlight On Living Generously, Changing Lives - New Addition to The Spire Newsletter
The Garden of Prayer is a spiritual haven located in between the Sanctuary and the Mansion. The Garden of Prayer is a place for prayer, meditation, reflection, and communion with God. Stepping into the Garden of Prayer is like being lifted up, as though floating amongst the Day Lilies or sitting high up in the Ash tree. If one could take the most beautiful prayers and cultivate a garden, the result would be our Garden of Prayer.
It is beautifully landscaped with Hydrangeas, Day Lilies, Ferns, Hosta, Peonies, Vinca, Ivy, Lenten roses, St. Johns Wort, Pachysandra, Calla lilies and Boxwoods. The Garden of Prayer is a memorial garden honoring those members who have passed.Several years ago a Columbarium was added beneath the iron hand railing and holds the ashes of those we have lost. In addition, the Scatter Garden on the East side contains scattered ashes of those who have left us.The Garden is managed and maintained by members of the Property Division with support provided by Woodmonts Endowment fund. Lives are changed and the Spirit lives generously in the Garden of Prayer.
Volunteers keep the Garden growing and cultivate its emerging beauty. Kristi Smith, Butch Smith, John Henderson and Steve McHugh lovingly preserve the Gardens tranquility so that this sacred space can be enjoyed.
For nearly 55 years, the Garden of Prayer has been a part of Woodmont. Here is an excerpt from The Wonder of Woodmont written by Bess White Cochran:
The spiritual life of the church found unique expression when a long cherished dream came to realization. From the time the property was first purchased, one of the hopes for its utilization was the creation of a Garden of Prayer. Tentative plans for such a spot had been drawn up from time to time, and its location had been variously placed in widely separated areas on the grounds. The spot finally chosen was the court area between the educational building and the sanctuary,
and here it was formally dedicated in July, 1961. Complete with an altar, fountains, special plantings, artifacts and other memorial features which represent the tireless labor of many loving hands, it is today a permanent object of beauty and inspiration.
Our family Garden of Prayer is, in truth, a Memorial Garden, Dr. Drowota said at the impressive dedication and communion service which marked the occasion. A place to honor and to remember those of our family who have left us, but who, before leaving, left us so much. It is a place for quiet meditation where family members so preoccupied with the day-to-day problems of feeding the body can, for a moment, feed the soul.
Jack Derryberry, Woodmont elder and church member for 58 years distinctly recalls his familys involvement in the design, installation and maintenance of the Garden, I was 14 when the Garden was formerly dedicated. I would mow, trim, and plant. My mother and father loved gardening together and cultivated the spiritual beauty of the Garden as a way to help Woodmonts members find a place to retreat and relax. Gene Derryberry (a Woodmont Timothy currently living in Asheville, NC) shared his memories of the Garden by saying, It brought me joy and peace to see my parents working together - to see the Garden grow, the flowers mature and the cycle of life renew. It is a terrific place to go to get ones thoughts together.
Please take a few moments to visit the Garden of Prayer. Adults and children are invited! We ask that children be supervised, the rock pathways be used for walking, and fish remain undisturbed.
They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of
a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. I Timothy 6:18-19

The Elders of Woodmont Invite You to Join Them in Prayer for: Those affected by the rain and flooding in TX. May the rainbows
appear soon! Our mission teams, such as Morgan-Scott, who continue to faithfully
provide for those in need. The blessings of living in a country where we may worship God openly
and freely, without fear of persecution or death. Our fathers as Fathers Day approaches. May we reflect on how much
our fathers mean to us, and how they have enriched our lives.
If life is getting you down? Do you need a Christian friend to listen, that is just what Woodmonts Stephen Ministers are trained to do. Please call Kathy Patten at 615-838-4957 to discuss the possibility of this being the help you need.
