Focusing the Microscope October 18, 2013
Describe at least three differences between the coarse and fine adjustment knobs. 1. Coarse is bigger, fine is smaller.2. Coarse moves the stage (a lot), fine focuses the image.3. Coarse is only used on scanning power.4. COARSE FIRST- FINE SECOND!
October 22, 2013
• Go to the group you were in yesterday. Completely clear your desk except:– Microscope review packet– Observation drawings from yesterday– Colored pencils and pencil– specimen
Today
• Today you will have the entire class period to make wet mount slides. You should complete at least one observation drawing. If you finish early (or while you’re waiting) work on your Microscope Review packet.
• REMEMBER to treat your microscope with respect. Do not allow water to touch the microscope.
Power of Magnification Journal October 23
Explain how to determine the power of magnification of a microscope. What are the differences in magnification when looking through the scanning, low and high power lenses?
Microscope Parts October 24
• Glue the orange microscope into your spiral.• Number your page 1-12 and list all the parts.

Grade Microscope Review Packet
• Use RED PEN• Write in all CORRECT ANSWERS• USE THIS TO STUDY FOR THE QUIZ
October 25
• Take out your review packet and go over your notes in preparation of the quiz.
Microscope Journal October 28
• Sit with your “wet slide” microscope group. • Take out your spiral and journal:How did you like the microscope unit overall? What did you like the best? What did you like least? What did you learn? What would you have liked to have learned that wasn’t covered?
October 29
• Look over the zombies article. • Complete the packet on the article.• When you are finished begin the SciTriv
questions on the back of the magazine. (Record the answers in your spiral)
Science Diagrams October 30th
Look at the diagram titled A Parasite’s Life on page 11 in the Science World magazine. 1. What was the authors purpose of putting this
diagram on this page? 2. Does it help you as a reader understand the
text? Why or why not?3. What other diagrams could the author have
included in the article?
Zombie Journal October 31st
Look at #2a on your homework from Wednesday. (Dissect an article)Which host/parasite pair did you report as being most interesting? Why did you choose this pair over the others?video 1Video 2

Final Zombie Journal November 1st
What is the purpose of parasites creating “zombies” out of their hosts? Use examples from the magazine or videos.
Atoms November 5th
What is an atom? Write down everything you know about atoms. You may draw pictures.Ideas: Who discovered atoms? What do they look like? How are atoms studied? What are they made of?
What is an atom?
• An atom is the smallest unit of a pure substance.
Atom Diagram November 6th
• Turn in the Brainpop matching worksheet to the bin. Please keep the 8 questions at your desk.
• Paste the atom diagram and chart into your spiral.
• Use pages E7-9 to label and fill in the chart.
Atom Review November 7th
• On a NEW page in your spiral, number 1-10.
Atom Review 11/7/13
1. What is an atom?2. Name the three subatomic particles.3. Which subatomic particle is positive?4. Which subatomic particle is considered to have no mass?5. What is found in the nucleus?6. What is found outside the nucleus?7. Which subatomic particle has no charge?8. Which subatomic particle has a negative charge?9. What is another word for “no charge”?10. What is the area around the nucleus called?
Atom Review Answers
1. The smallest part of a substance 2. Protons, neutrons and electrons3. proton4. electron5. Protons and neutrons6. electrons7. neutrons8. electrons9. neutral10. Electron cloud
Atom Diagram Nov 6
• Glue atom diagram and chart into your spiral.• Complete the information
Bohr Model Review
• Protons and Neutrons make up the nucleus• Electrons are found in shells around the
nucleus– K holds up to 2 electrons– L holds up to 8 electrons– M can hold up to 18 (can fill up at 8)
Draw a Beryllium Bohr Model
Draw a Neon Bohr Model
Draw a Sodium Bohr Model
Argon Bohr Model November 8th
• Review your notes from yesterday. Do your best to draw a Bohr model of Argon.
Argon Bohr ModelGive yourself a star for each of the following.• Protons and neutrons in the nucleus• 18 protons• 22 neutrons• 18 electrons all together
– 2 in K shell– 8 in L shell– 8 in M shell
How many stars?
• 7= EXCELLENT!!• 6= GOOD JOB- review what you did wrong• 5 or below= LET’S PRACTICE!
Element T-Shirt Project!!!
Bohr Model Problem November 12
• If we have 24 students in our class. What is the largest element we could create a human Bohr model of?
• If there are 99 students on our team. What is the largest element we could create a human Bohr model of?
• Oxygen #8
• Zinc #30 Note: you wouldn’t use all the students.
Explain how to draw a Bohr Model
• Write all the steps you follow in order to draw a correct Bohr Model

How to Make anAtom Study Claw…
1. Cut out the Fortune Teller along the outside line (6 or 8 inch square)2. With the printed side up, fold the square in half horizontally and then
vertically, open the folds.3. Turn the square over.4. Fold each corner over so they meet in the middle, do not let them overlap.5. Leave the square folded, and flip the square over.6. Now fold the corners into the center – make sure they do not overlap.7. Fold the entire square in half and poke your thumbs and forefingers in under
the flaps.8. Bring your fingers together so the Fortune Teller forms a peak –
9. YOU are ready to label your Study Claw!
• On each of the outside flaps label: – atom, proton, neutron, electron
• In the atom section label:– Nucleus, Cloud
• In the proton section label:– Weight, Charge
• In the neutron section label:– Weight, Charge
• In the electron section label:– Weight, Charge
• Fill in each of the small flaps underneath. Use this to study.
Atom “Quiz” Preparation November 13
• How do you think you will do on the atom “quiz” today?
• Explain why. What is easy for you? What is still difficult?
• What did you do to prepare?
Atom Notes E6-7 11/13
• Read pages E6-7• After reading each paragraph write a one
sentence summary.
Atom “Quiz”2 November 14
• Look at the answers, what did you get wrong? Why?
November 15
• Turn in your homework to the bin.• Read “The Atoms Family” • Draw the character and fill out their ID boxes
with information from the text.
