Executive Summary:
The B. P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology Chapter was established on August 2010
with the aim to provide a learning platform to younger minds and inspiring them in the field of
light-based research and engineering.
Since then, it has been actively organizing seminars, workshops, industrial visits, quiz
competitions and various other activities to fulfill the very objective it has been established for.
This year, our chapter organized its 2nd National Conference on Information, Photonics and
Communication (IPC) 2019 as well as conducted a workshop and hands-on session on the topic
“Advanced Optical Communication”. An industrial visit was also organized in Central Glass and
Ceramics Research Institute. The annual technical quiz competition, Abhigyan and laser game,
KHET has also been conducted as usual.
Overall, it was an enriching experience for all the SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter members.

Information, Photonics and Communication (IPC) 2019 National Conference
Organizer: Department of Electronics & Communication, BPPIMT sponsored by IEEE and published by Springer

Day 2 • Prof. B.M. Arora, IIT Bombay on “Advances in Silicon Photovoltaics”
• Ms. Mitali Biswas, Associate Director of IBM on “IoT- creating a smarter tomorrow”
• Prof. Ansuman Bhattacharya, IIT Dhanbad on “Cognitive Radio Ad-hoc Networks”
• Prof. Kallol Bhattacharya, University of Calcutta on “Microscopy to Nanoscopy”
Day 3 • Prof. Sumana Gupta, IIT Kanpur on “Selective Motion Segmentation using Spatiotemporal Regularity Flow Model”

Participants: 130 students (Mostly from different engineering branches and 32 from outside our chapter)

From the 1st- 3rd February 2019, the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of B.P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology in association with the SPIE Student Chapter organized its 2nd National Conference on Information, Photonics and Communication (IPC) 2019 sponsored by IEEE and published by Springer. The conference aimed to introduce the concepts of photonic information, signal processing & intelligent system, device & VLSI, communication system & networks to students, researchers, engineers and scientists. Many eminent speakers both from academia and industry enlightened the audience from various perspectives and thereby provided an overview of the state of the art in the field. The proceedings of the conference consisted of invited talks by eminent speakers from industry and academia, paper presentation sessions and tutorials. The conference was concluded by a valedictory session in which all the paper presenters received certificates of paper presentation. IEEE (WIE) awarded the top two papers presented at IPC 2019 with the IEEE-WIE Best and IEEE-WIE Award and a small cash prize along with it. The conference was ended by the vote of thanks delivered by the organizing committee chairperson of IPC 2019- Dr. Ranjana Goswami.

Abhigyan- the annual technical Quiz competition
Organizer: Department of Electronics & Communication, BPPIMT
Speakers: Not Applicable
Date/Time/Location: 1st March, 2019 at Block-B, BPPIMT
Participants: 300 students (150 teams comprising of 2 students each from different branches of Engineering)
Cost: $ 50 (For certificates & Banner printing)
'Abhigyan’, the annual Technical Quiz was organized by the Department of ECE in association
with SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT on 1st March 2019 like every year. This event provided a
platform to the students to reveal and enrich their technical knowledge. 150 teams registered
for the prelims, amongst which six teams were selected for the final. The final round became
exciting through 4 technical rounds out of which the champion was selected.

KHET 2019
Organizer: Department of Electronics & Communication, BPPIMT
Speakers: Not Applicable
Date/Time/Location: 15th – 16th March, 2019 at Block-B, BPPIMT
Participants: 44 students
Cost: $ 50 (For certificate printing and prize)
Khet, also known as Deflection is a chess-like abstract strategy board game played with help of
lasers. Players take turns moving Egyptian themed pieces around the playing field, firing their
low-powered laser diode after each move. Most of the pieces are mirrored on one or more sides,
allowing the players to alter the path of the laser through the playing field. When a piece is struck
by a laser on a non-mirrored side, it is eliminated from the game.
Like every year, SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter organized a two-day Khet competition, as a part
of technical fest in college, on 15th and 16th March, 2019. The chapter has already made the game
popular and the interest of students is growing day by day. Many students participated and they
showed excellent skills at Khet. The winners were awarded by SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter.

Advanced Optical Communication Workshop
Organizer: Department of Electronics & Communication, BPPIMT

• Dr. Anirban Dhar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-CGCRI on "Specialty Optical Fiber. Materials, fabrication & Opportunities"
• Dr. Mrinmay Pal, Principal Scientist, CSIR-CGCRI on "Basics on Fiber Laser and Fiber Amplifiers"
Date/Time/Location: 6th September, 2019 at Block-B, BPPIMT
Participants: 102 students and 23 Faculty Members
Cost: $ 80 (For certificate & banner printing, mementos, kits, snacks and refreshments)
Aiming to provide an open forum for faculty members and undergraduate students with an
emphasis on Design and Testing of Optical Systems, a one-day Workshop on "Advanced Optical
Communication" was organized by the Department of Electronics and Communication
Engineering in association with SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT, on September 6, 2019. 102
students and 23 faculty & staff members actively participated in the workshop.
On the first half of the day, a lecture was delivered by Dr. Ivy Majumder, HOD, ECE Dept. on
"Optical Communication, An Overview" followed by a Hands-on training Session on "Advanced
Optical Communication" conducted by Dr. Surajit Mondal, Ms. Somali Sikder and Mr. Debashish
Sharma from the Department of ECE.
On the second half, two invited lecture sessions were held. Dr. Anirban Dhar, Senior Scientist,
CSIR-CGCRI, delivered a lecture on "Specialty Optical Fiber. Materials, fabrication &
Opportunities". Dr. Mrinmay Pal, Principal Scientist, CSIR-CGCRI, delivered a lecture on "Basics
on Fiber Laser and Fiber Amplifiers". The program was concluded with a feedback session both
from the students and the invited speakers. This event was a grand success.

Central Glass & Ceramics Research Institute (CGCRI) Industrial Visit
Organizer: Department of Electronics & Communication, BPPIMT

Date/Time/Location: 9th September, 2019 at Central Glass & Ceramics Research Institute, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
Participants: 30 students and 2 Faculty Members
Cost: $ 60 (For traveling, refreshments)
Department of ECE in association with SPIE student chapter, BPPIMT had organized a one-day
industrial visit at Central Glass & Ceramics Research Institute, Kolkata on 9.9.19. 30 students of
2nd year along with two faculty members, ECE Dept. experienced the present scenario of Optical
Communication throughout the world. Students were very much excited when they observed
the process of optical fibre drawing. They got exposure to optical fibre pre-form preparation,
optical amplifier, optical sensors etc. the visit ended with an interaction with Dr. Ranjan Sen,
advisor, where he met the students and encouraged them for research. Thanks to Dr. Somnath
Bandopadhyay, Dr. Mrinmay Pal, Dr. Anirban Dhar, CGCRI and Dr. Vedatryee Chakraborty,
BPPIMT for organizing such a beautiful and effective event.

SPIE Induction Program 2019

The Department of Electronics and Communication, BPPIMT organizes SPIE Induction Program
every year to familiarize the newly joined First Year Btech Students under the course, Electronics
and Communication with the objectives and the year-round activities conducted by our SPIE
Student Chapter and motivate them to be the part of this breath-taking journey.
This Program is entirely conducted by the newly elected SPIE Student Chapter Officers which
offers them the opportunity of a peer-to-peer interaction as well as encourages the newly-joined
to come forth and take up their doubts with the seniors.

Treasurer’s Report
Conclusions and Recommendations
This has been a truly memorable year at SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT. We organized a plethora
of events to encourage not only SPIE student members in the field of research and technology
but also branched-out to reach students from all other fields of science at various institutions.
The workshop on “Advanced Optical Communication” really helped students to understand the
fabrication procedures and functioning of Optical Fibers and provided a deeper insight into the
communication process. Hence, similar workshops should also be conducted in future.
The SPIE BPPIMT research lab needs an upgradation and will be a domain to ponder over for the
next SPIE chapter officers.
