Annual Report (October 2015 to September 2016)
Cochin University SPIE Student chapter celebrated its 11th year of active research related
activities during this year. Since its inception in October 2005, the chapter was really enthusiastic in
various academic activities. At present the chapter have 26 members. The chapter members are currently
working in the areas of Nanophosphors and Quantum wells, Transparent Thin Film Transistors,
Hydrothermal Growth of Nanoparticles, Spintronics, Photovoltaic energy storage materials and devices,
Transparent Conducting Oxides, Ferroelectric Random Access Memories, Holography, Luminescent
materials and Conducting Polymers. All the members are actively participating in the programs organized
by the chapter and Dept. of Physics. This year the following activities were carried out by the SPIE
CUSAT student chapter.
Academic Training
The SPIE-CUSAT Student Chapter in association with Department of Physics, Cochin University
of Science and Technology conducted Academic Training for Graduate/Post graduate Students of various
institutions in Kerala. Eleven students have completed their academic projects in the areas of
Optoelectronic Devices, Non-linear Optics, Nanoparticles and Thin films this year. This year the students
were trained in the following areas.

Activities
Physics – Scope and Awareness for School Children April 4-8, 2016 SPIE Student Chapter organized student outreach programs to attract talented students to the fascinating
world of Science and Technology. The six day workshop envisages to provide an opportunity to students
to interact with the faculty members, listen to new developments in scientific fields and also witness some
of the advanced experiments being carried-out in the research laboratories of the Department of Physics
and also to gain hands on experience on various core experiments in Physics, telescope making etc.

National Workshop on “Nanophotonics” ,
18th -19th March, 2016 Department of Physics, Centre for advanced materials and SPIE CUSAT student chapter jointly organized the national workshop on “Nanophotonics”. The workshop was a platform that enabled
young researchers, especially the masters students to share ideas, which inculcated a quest for
knowledge through the spirit of enquiry and research. The two day workshop includes talks by
resource persons from prestigious institutes. A poster presentation by the master students was also
organized.Theme of the Workshop was Hybrid Perovskite Material, 2D-Field Emission Transistors,
2D Materials : Beyond Graphene Quantum Transport in 1D Nanomaterials, Solar Cells and Energy
Storage Materials.

Spie Decenary Lecture Series
As a part of the 10th anniversary of our chapter, a lecture series named SPIE Deccenary Lecture
Series was initiated. Dr. Ramesh Babu T (CUSAT) delivered a talk on “Neutrino Oscillations” on
15thOctober 2015, at Physics Auditorium. The second talk in the series was delivered by Dr. Titus K
Mathew (CUSAT) on “An Introduction to Dark Energy” on 28th October 2015, at Physics auditorium. Prof. Cristobel Voz (UniversitatPolytécnicaCatalunya, Barcelona) gave a talk on “Crystalline Silicon “
on 11th February 2016 at St. Paul’s College Kalamassery

International Year Of Light Celebrations
The yearlong celebrations of International Year of light 2015 was inaugurated on 21st July 2015
at Physics department of Cochin University of Science and Technology.SPIE CUSAT student chapter
organized one day seminars at various colleges in the state of Kerala as a part of International Year of light celebrations. The institutions selected were University college Thiruvananthapuram, NSS college
Nilamel, Bishop Moore college Mavelikara, Baselius college Kottayam, BPC College Piravam,
SreeKeralavarma college Thrissur, Govt. college Chittoor, Marthoma College Chungathara, Govt. Arts
and Science college Kozhikode and Krishna Menon Momorial Govt. college Kannur.
Seminar on “Sculpting Light – Holography and Applications”
Dept. of Physics, Bishop Moore College, Mavelikara
The Department of Physics, Bishop Moore College, Mavelikara, organized a seminar on “Sculpting Light
– Holography and Applications” on 3rd September, 2015 as part of celebrating the International Year of
Light, 2015. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. P.T. Ajith Kumar (President and Leading Scientist,
Light Logics Holography and Optics). 130 participants, including students from neighboring colleges,
attended the seminar.

Workshop on “ Energy Saving and Eco-friendly LED Light bulb assembly”
Dept. of Physics Baselius College, Kottayam
The Dept. of Physics, Baselius College, Kottayam organized a one day workshop on the Energy saving
and ecofriendly LED light bulb assembly on 28th November 2015. The workshop was intended to get
hands on training in the assembling of LED light bulbs. It offered an opportunity for the students to
understand the techniques involved in the making of LED bulbs and its importance.
Presentation Competition
Govt. College,Chittur
A presentation competition was conducted in the Dept. of Physics of Govt. College, Chittur on 28th
September 2015. The presentation competition was inaugurated by the Principal Sri. Sethumadhavan.
Fifteen students participated in the competition. The topic for the presentation was “Incandescent to
LED”

One Day Seminar on “International Year of Light 2015”
Dept. of Physics, Mar Thoma College, Chungathara
Department of Physics, Mar Thoma College, Chungathara has organized a one day seminar on
“International Year of Light” on 11th September 2015. The seminar was officially inaugurated Prof. V. P.
N. Nampoori, Emiritus scientist, CUSAT and Kerala University. The talks were delivered by Prof. V. P.
N. Nampoori on “Story of light and the historical perspective”, Dr. Jeevan Job Thomas on “ History of
light” and Dr. Devaraj on “ Vedic Mathematics”.

K. M. M. Govt. Women’s College, Kannur
The Dept. of Physics, K.M.M. Govt. Women’s College, Kannur conducted a one day seminar on 30th
September 2015 for Physics students and teachers in Kannur University. Dr. K. Chandrasekharan, Prof.
Dept. of Physics, NIT Calicut and Dr. Sathish Kumar M. K., Asso. Prof (Retd.), Govt. Brennan College,
Thalassery were the resource persons.
A Physics quiz competition based on light and its applications was conducted for BSc. students of Kannur
University. Sri. Suresh T. P, Asst. Prof. of Physics, Govt. Brennan College, Thalassery was the quiz
master.

State level Seminar in connection with International Year of Light
Dept. of Electronics, Baselios Poulose II Catholics College, Piravom
Dept. of Electronics, BaseliosPoulose II Catholics College conducted a state level seminar in connection
with International Year of Light on 28th January 2016. Program was inaugurated by Dr. Suresh Nair K. R,
Chief Technology Officer, SFO Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Kochi. There were invited talks by Dr. Suresh
Nair K. R, Asst. Professor in Physics, M. A. College, Kothamangalam, Dr. Riju C. Issac, Asst. Professor
in Physics, M. A. College, Kothamangalam and Dr. Jacob Philip, Professor, Amal Jyothy College of
Engineering, Kanjirappally.

SPIE Annual meeting
SPIE member Mr. Kurias K Markose participated in the SPIE annual meeting held at San Diego,
USA on 27thaugust 2016. He is the winner of SPIE officer travel grant for the year 2016. He also
participated in the optics and photonics 2016 conference held at San Diego during 28th to 1stof September
2016. Mr. Kurias K Markose presented poster entitled “Enhancement of a:Si:H solar cellefficiency using
Y2O3:Er:Yb spectral upconverter” in optics and photonics 2016.
