Notes from Nadine As I am sitting here thinking of all the things I would like to share with you, I am looking at the leaves with all the changing colors. I think about the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons that are quickly ap-proaching. With these thoughts in mind, I can’t keep from comparing them with Delta Kap-

pa Gamma. As I look back over the 35 years of my membership, I have seen many changes. Just a few of these changes are: the number of years experience that a teacher must have before becoming a DKG member, the “dress code”, being able to use DKG instead of the Greek sym-bols, the definition of “educator”, etc. A major change

in Delta State was changing our State Convention in even-numbered years to Area Conferences. Some of these changes were difficult to accept, but we grow when we get out of our comfort zone. Thanksgiving reminds me of how thankful I am to have had the honor and privilege to meet so many won-derful ladies during these 35 years of membership. I now have friends in many states and other countries that I would never have met if it had not been for Delta Kap-pa Gamma. I was counting last week and I realized that there are only 7 people in DKG that I would have known if I had not been a member. Christmas is very closely connected to the previous statements. I have received the precious gift of friend-ship through my DKG membership. All of these are priceless and I treasure every one of them. Enjoy all the seasons with friends and family! -Nadine Horner Delta State President

Ten Ways to Support Schools for Africa Schools for Africa (SFA) is one of our International projects. It is an initiative whose goal is to provide access to quality education for mil-lions of children in sub-Saharan Afri-ca. The need is great since almost 53% of the children in the world, who do not attend school, live in this region. Delta Kappa Gamma in part-nership with UNICEF is working to support this program with monetary donations. It is really simple to sup-port this program by finding a way for your chapter to make a donation. Have some fun with this and find creative ways to educate and involve your members in this International project. Amazingly enough, through this program and partners like DKG more than 21 million children are receiving some kind of educational help. Here are some ideas to help pro-mote this project in your chapter: 1. Simply pass a basket at a meeting

and have members make a dona-tion. That is a quick and easy way to receive contributions. You may be surprised how suc-cessful this might be. If you would like other ideas or find ways to raise awareness read the

following suggestions. 2. Find someone who has made a

trip to Africa, have them make a presentation and then ask mem-bers for donations.

3. Print flyers from DKG Interna-tional website (https://www.dkg.org/content/schools-africa) and distribute at chapter meetings.

4. Have a committee or chapter member make hand-made cards to sell at a meeting. Use the pro-ceeds to support SFA. A meet-ing before Christmas or Valen-tine’s Day might be the perfect time to do this.

5. Have a member use one of the presentations from Interna-

tional’s website (https://www.dkg.org/content/schools-africa-0#node-6556) and present this to your chapter as a program at a meeting. Then offer the op-portunity for members to make a donation.

6. Have a safari themed meeting. Provide African music through-out the meeting. Ask members to dress as if they were going on a safari. Perhaps the president or another volunteer could serve as the guide and narrate what the members are seeing. Show slides of Africa with the various ani-mals and pretend to be riding in a vehicle. Provide some interest-ing sights like a charging ele-phant. The guide could add some dramatic effect to this as she shows fear or excitement in her voice. Involve several mem-bers in this activity so it is not an overwhelming task for one per-son. Perhaps the food served could be dishes from Africa. Pre-tend to stop in a village and have someone speak about the need for education and the lack of it in their village. Before leaving, pass a basket for donations.

7. Schools in a Box are one way that educational materials are provided for African children. These boxes provide school sup-plies and other materials needed for about 80 school children. Using the idea of a school in a box completes two projects in one. Have several boxes availa-ble at the meeting and ask mem-bers to bring school supplies with them, also ask them to bring a monetary donation for SFA, and have a box available for the do-nations. You might create a box that looks like the SFA’s box with the chalk board inside. For details see the website below. The school supplies could be

used for a local need such as for children at a homeless shelter or perhaps for students at a local school. Information about the Schools in a Box can be found at the UNICEF website at http://www.unicef.org/supply/index_40377.html.

8. Show a video about SFA at a meeting. There are several avail-able on YouTube.

9. At a chapter meeting present facts about the SFA program em-phasizing the issue of litera-cy. You can find this information at the International website (www.dkg.org). To provide funds for SFA, have members bring gently used books to sell. The proceeds from this sale should be sent to SFA.

10. Present a fact about the need for education in Africa in each chap-ter newsletter. For example: Mozambique is one of the poorest and most underdeveloped countries in the world. While education is mandatory there, many children do not attend school because they are needed to work on their families’ sub-

sistence farms. The facts could be

developed from the information

on the SFA page. https://www.dkg.org/content/schools-africa-0#node-6556. At some point during the year, allow members the opportunity to make a donation.

The SFA project is supported by donations to the program. Any col-lection of items or hands-on projects, while they may be very worthwhile are not supporting the SFA project. To easily allow members to make a donation collect the money and then send one check from the chapter. Increasing global awareness at meet-ings and in newsletters will help to promote giving to this project. -Cay Sergent First Vice President

Membership Next Saturday Xi Chapter will be initiating a new member. Yay! Good

for us! But who are we and what will she see? Are we tea party (no, not politically) types, who sit and primly sip tea and smile politely after reports are given, or will she see roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-busy women who have robust program topics, support T.H.A.T. (a shout-out to the sister who started that marvelous effort), actually attend meetings, and rejoice in their sisterhood. What does it mean to “belong” to anything or anyone? We may be con-tent to wear a wedding band but not really “be there” for our husband. We may drop some cash in the col-lection plate—when we choose to attend church—but not actively serve others and carry out the ministry. We may pay our dues to DKG but not attend those pesky meetings where we put on that lovely pin (think wedding band) and might be expected to voice our opinion on a critical matter or work to support the scholarship fund or service project or T.H.A.T. Am I preaching to the choir here? Membership is everyone’s responsi-bility, not just for your chapter’s des-ignated “Membership Chairman.”

When a non-member’s name comes to your attention, write a letter of congratulations. (Stick in a Society Membership Brochure.) At back to school time or for any holiday or be-fore an election, go to school and put something non-members would ap-preciate in mailboxes. (Stick in a So-ciety Membership Brochure.) For your chapter, create a “care” com-mittee to check regularly on inactive or older members and to share this information with the chapter. At a meeting ask members to create a chapter metaphor: gather into small groups to discuss, come to consen-sus, then share with the entire chap-ter. For instance, if our chapter were a fruit, or a wild animal, or a city, or a weather phenomenon, what would

we be? Great fellowship and fun comes from working together. Do we allow enough time for socializing? Isn’t that what sisters and friends like to do, too? Besides the 3 R’s, Read-in’, ‘Ritin’, and ‘Rithmetic, remem-ber the 4 R’s of membership: Recruit, Retain, Reinstate, Recognize. -Alice Neal, Xi Chapter

Scholarship

Don’t Put IT Off! NOW is the time to consider applying for one of three Delta State Scholarships or two Bradford Grants-in-Aid. The dead-

line is MARCH 1, 2015. All infor-mation and application forms are on the Delta State website at dkg.missouri.org/resources. Delta State members contribute to the Scholarship Fund as part of our dues, so let’s make use of it! If you have any questions, please contact Grace Weber, Delta State Scholar-ship Chair at [email protected]. Recipients will be announced at the Delta State Convention in April. Perhaps your name or someone from your chapter will be recognized! -Grace Weber

Professional Affairs The Professional Affairs Committee encourages each chapter to nominate someone from among them for the Key Woman Educator Recognition Award, (formerly known as the Excel-

lence in Education Award) that will be

awarded to a nominated member of each chapter at the 2015 Delta State Convention. The nomination form can be found on the Delta State web-site under the forms section. The absolute due date (no exceptions) will be March 1, 2015. Please do rec-ognize one of your worthy members this year for this award. At the state convention a state representative will provide a workshop about legislative issues (pertaining to education) that are currently being discussed and

decided upon at the state level. -Judy Heuer

Nominations It is hard to believe that it is time to think about our leadership for the next biennium. We desire to have willing individuals who believe in the purpose of Delta Kappa Gamma to lead us in this upcoming biennium. Now is the time to ask yourself if you are willing to take the next step of accepting a Delta State leadership position. By becoming a leader in your chap-ter and/or Delta State, you are help-ing our society to grow and thrive in the coming years. Take a good look at those leaders in your chapter that you might nominate for the next bi-ennium or reflect on whether you would consider volunteering your-self. The form is under “Resources” of the www.dkgmissouri.com. Look for “Officer Nominations Form”. If you have any questions, please contact Teresa Begemann ([email protected]). -Teresa Begemann Delta State Nominations Chair

Bev Teri Represents Delta State at International It was exciting and inspiring to see the International Delta Kappa Gam-ma building. It is part offices, part meeting rooms and part historical museum. Dr. Lyn Schmid, Interna-tional President, appointed me to the International E.E.C. (Educational Excellence) Committee (formerly the Program of Work Committee). Fifteen members (including Iceland and Germany) attended the planning meeting on October 24-25, 2014. My roommate was Ilene Wagner,

Las Vegas, Nevada. We will be working together to present the all-day training session for 2015-17 State E.E.C. Chairs (1st Vice Presidents) at the SW Regional Conference in Wichita, Kansas. At the conference, we will also create a booth at the In-fo Fair and present a workshop. We should be busy the next few months finalizing our plans with the other members of the committee so each regional will be imparting the same information.

It was not all work because mealtime was a time for getting to know each other, sharing about our states/countries and laughing. On Saturday, we had lunch in the Annie Webb Blanton room and dinner at a local restaurant. Our International President is very personable and en-tertaining so we should have lots of fun in Wichita at our SW Regional Conference in July 22-25, 2015. -Bev Teri, International Educational Excellence Committee

Delta State Chapters and Members Shine Brightly Beta Chapter is celebrating its 80th birthday and was recently educated

on the birth of our chapter by Valerie

Goodin, previous chair of the Com-

munications and Publicity Commit-tee. Valerie gave a very in-depth presentation of the founding of Beta Chapter with many primary docu-ments valuable to its founding. The presentation was a wonderful intro-duction to newer members and rein-forced the history to older members. Some details of Beta’s birth follow. Beta Chapter was welcomed into the Delta Kappa Gamma sisterhood on October 13, 1934 in Columbia led by Ella Victoria Dobbs and Minnie Irons. Thirteen women met at Min-nie Irons’s house for a luncheon meeting to select officers, apply for a charter from Delta Kappa Gamma and develop its program of work. Beta Chapter grew quickly and by the fall of 1935 included 31 mem-bers. Beta Chapter has had many prominent female community mem-bers as members and/or guest speak-ers over the past 80 years. We have been very fortunate to have very de-

tailed historians beginning with Ella

Victoria Dobbs to capture our chap-ter’s history so that future genera-tions of Beta sisters will know the

amazing women who came before them.

Beta Rho Chapter of Missouri State is proud to announce two members, Julie Flieg and Tracey Eatherton, have obtained their Doc-tor of Education Degree.

Dr. Julie Flieg re-

ceived her Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) with an Em-phasis in Leadership in Teaching and Learning from Mis-souri Baptist Univer-sity in St. Louis,

Missouri. Dr. Flieg currently is the Assistant Superintendent at Ste.

Genevieve RII School District.

Dr. Tracey

Eatherton received her Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) from Missouri Bap-tist University in St.

Louis, Missouri. Dr. Eatherton cur-rently teachers Family and Consum-er Science at Ste. Genevieve High School.

The members of Alpha Iota, Beta

Delta, Beta Pi, and Gamma Tau

met in October for the annual Jeffer-

son County Joint Council meeting.

Approximately 60 sisters from the four chapters joined together at the High Ridge Fire Department Head-quarters. The theme for the evening was Firehouse Games. The night began with time for the sisterhood to share a meal of chili and the “fixins”. Delta State President, Nadine Horn-er, spoke to the membership on a variety of topics. Then the games began. The chapters competed against each other in a water bucket line, catch the ball in the fire helmet, and dress like a fireman. Winners received gift cards to the Firehouse Subs restaurant. Chapter members were asked to bring gently used shoes to donate to the Shoeman Water Projects. The shoes collected are exported to dis-tributors in Kenya, Haiti, and South America. There they are sold by street vendors for pennies on the dol-lar. The funds generated from these sales are used to develop and main-tain water purification systems. There were 200 pairs of shoes col-lected at the joint council. These shoes will be used to provide com-munities around the world with the life-saving gift of clean water.

More Chapter and Member News Gloria Juedemann, retired school

counselor from Union and Alpha

Theta member, has taught in the Jiangsu Teacher Training Program in China each summer since 2006, and she became the director of We Teach in China in 2008. This pro-gram is the only one of its kind in the United States. Gloria has assisted over 130 teachers with the opportuni-ty to work in this amazing program. Teaching in China during the sum-mer is an educational and cultural experience and many who have par-ticipated say it is the highlight of their career! Perhaps that is why many people return summer after summer for the incredible opportuni-ty to work with Chinese English teachers. In this safe and trusted pro-gram, native English speakers teach conversational English for 2 or 4 weeks in July, making it a well suited program for teachers who are still employed or for those who are re-cently retired and who want area short term experience teaching in a foreign country. The goal of the pro-gram is to work with Chinese Eng-lish teachers to help them improve their ability to speak English, help them improve their ability to listen to

and understand native English speak-ers, and to provide some methods of teaching that can be used in the Chi-nese classrooms. Lesson plans are provided. Teachers do not need to be TESOL or ESL certified. Teach-ers from all disciplines are encour-aged to apply. In this program teachers experience the daily life of the Chinese. It is unlike a tour because teachers stay in one city while they teach and there-fore have the incredible opportunity to observe and even participate in daytime and evening activities of the local citizens. It is not uncommon to participate in English Corners on Friday nights and to even join in evening outdoor dance activities.

Shopping is a lot of fun and there is plenty to buy! China is famous for silk and pearls, as well as tea. Sam-ples of different teas are available in almost every store. Food is another experience and you are welcome to try many local dishes but the host schools work hard to provide some tastes of home at mealtime. Tours of the local area where teach-ers work are provided, as well as a wonderful tour of Nanjing. And, since teachers fly into Shanghai, they have the opportunity to walk The Bund, explore the famous Nanjing Road, and visit the world renowned Yunan Gardens. In China all of a person’s senses are on alert! There are new sights, sounds, and smells everywhere! To apply, teachers need a degree, experience teaching, and be in good health. Teachers over the age of 65

are required to have a letter from their doctor that states they are in good health for the trip. Teachers receive an experience of a lifetime and are paid $800 for teach-ing 2 weeks and $1600 for teaching 4 weeks. Housing and food is provid-ed, as well as tours of local areas and

in Nanjing. Lesson plans, lesson plan training, and orientation to Chi-na are provided. Teachers must pay a processing fee, pay for their own airfare, have a passport, obtain a Chinese Visa, and pay for 2 nights lodging (the first night they arrive and the last night before they depart China for home). For more information, call Gloria Juedemann at 636-328-2318.
